People claim stats are determined BEFORE you ID. I just want to know your take on this.

I believe it. As there's no conclusive evidence short of lag to prove it, or to prove otherwise, I don't think there can really be any other way to find out, either.

Not that it really matters, imo.. it's one of those 'does anyone care' type of topics. Whether it is or not has no effect on the way things work, unless someone plans on hacking the server and resetting the item or something

I know for a fact they're determined before you ID. Once, waaaay back when my Elementalist was first reaching the Copperhammer Mines, I was doing my usual ID/sell off junk. The server messed up / hiccup'ed, booted a bunch of people (myself included). When I got back online, everything was back to as it was when I first entered Copperhammer (nothing more annoying than having to resell a bunch of junk ) and, surprise surprise, everything was exactly the same as before. Same stupid runes (I actually failed a salvage attempt the second time as opposed to the first time I succeeded, this before it was automatic), same useless upgrades, same everything.

There's a bit more to the story, but in a sentence: Stats are determined when the item is dropped.

Yep, I can tell when someone's carrying a crappy 1:-1 vamp bow, a 4:-1 gold vamp bow, or a 5:-1 green vamp bow. The enemies pretty much carry what weapons and equipment they're going to drop.

you can equip an unid weapon and see if there is a telltale -1 energy regen, -1 health regen, or +health.

Yep, I've seen evidence pointing towards Monster holding the weapon they drop due to Mist Form's old version which still took damage from Elemental modded weapons.

:P So it kind of stood out when I took elemental damage from a Tengu's weapon and then indentify it as such when it dropped.

Wouldn't the enemy die of vamp degen before you reach them if they're far into the level?

I thought that outside of battle all creatures have a certain 'natural regen' (five pips? I never really do count), hence outside of battle they'd only have a lowered regen rate rather than a negative one - hence the not dying.

They don't always drop what they hold, nor is what they drop what they're holding. It's more likely that what they're holding will drop though.

Yeah, everything I've seen up to this point has me convinced that if you see a monster holding a Firey Dragon Sword or whatever, he WILL have it in his loot table. He may not drop it, but he has the potential to.

Fellblades drop pretty much anywhere past the Crystal Desert.
