What's Exhaustion mean?

For example, Meteor and Meteor Shower.

Each time you cast a spell that causes exhaustion, your maximum energy is reduced by 10. This is represented by a segment of your blue energy bar turning grey. Exhaustion wears off gradually over time, but it stacks with itself - if you cast lots of exhaustion-causing spells, the grey can take over your whole energy bar and leave you with nothing to cast with.

I don't know offhand how quickly your max energy recovers from exhaustion (I rarely play elementalists), but it's definitely slower than your normal 4-arrow energy regen.
