Guide Us Guiding You
Sausaletus Rex
With the upcoming BWE and all we'd like to start filling in the "basic" information on this site. We tend to concentrate on the deep, dark information that makes most people's eyes spin. The high end stuff, really, and I think it's well represented here. But we also want to be a site that helps people get to that high end. So, we'd like to have FAQs and guides and information not just for the experienced and knowledgable players but for the novices as well. The problem, though, is time and effort. There's a lot to cover and we can't get it all done at once so we need to pick our battles.
That in mind, we'd like to ask the various members of our community who frequent here just what sorts of guides and beginning information would you like to see here?
We can't, obviously, break the NDA or anything, but what sort of stuff would you like to see?
Would you like guides to fighting in the Ascalon Arena? Or in the Arena in general? Would you like us to talk about forming groups and parties? Do you want us to start cataloging all the sidequests? Do you want information on just what's the best way to level? Armor dyeing? What? Let us know so we can hopefully get it done.

I'd like to say everything since all of that is useful to new players and some even to old players who aren't in alpha.
I'd like to se a general introduction to GW that outlines the general concept as well as touching on crafting, dyeing, trading, skill aquisition the PvE system and the different options for PvP. From this overview there could be links to more in depth topics in each area such as the best places to level and the strengths and weaknesses of the monters in PvE or beginners tips for the different PvP arenas in the PvP section. A section like this would be nice to point out to people who know absolutly nothing about GW.
An general overview with a few sentences about each area might be the easiest way to break a new player in to the GW world.

A big plus would be a newbee starter guide. You've got some info for "Old Ascalon" but it has a lot of holes - I would also consider chanding the name to Pre-Searing rather than Old - it might get confusing. I've got a partial done, but I'm still missing some information.

the only thing that a pre-searing guide would do bad is it would take away from the first time you play, it would be more like reading insturctions and following them you wouldnt really learn, but i might be thinking of a completly diffrent guide then you i read stuff wrong alot

I was meaning more of the idea of things that you should do befor joining the acadamy, not nessisarily how to do it. I don't want to see a walkthrough.

I would like to see a list of all the possible items that can be crafted and what materials and gold is needed to craft that item. Also listing the NPC in w/e town it can crafted in.
-EDIT- nvm i found it, i feel stupid for not seeing it

Something like Shrapnel's guide here?

I know it's posted on the Guild War Guru site, but when I was looking through the Skill Trainer listings, I couldn't really seem to find out which trainer was specifically in which spot (i.e. where the Warrior training in Olde Ascalon is, etc). Maybe relook it and try to make it less confusing? Either that, or somebody needs to hit me in the head with something hard, 'cause my brain seems like it's shutting down on me

There are many builds in the guru directory. Most of them are either powerful builds for advanced players or rogue build using unusual skills. It might be a good idea to add a few beginner builds with a tutorial on how to play them. By beginner, I mean:
- skills that are easy to get (no trading, no exotic gambler...)
- skills that are straightforward (no meta game involved, no µs timing, no click/hotkey fest)
- a build that doesn't require lvl20 to be playable (how do you play this character at lvl5/10/15 ?)
- a build can that can be played with the average equipement a newcomer can find (no energy leech sword, no mandatory rune/armor)
- a build that is somewhat balanced and self sufficient (off/def/heal) in order to be playable in pickup groups with poor tanks/healers
As for the tutorial, it would be nice talk about:
- the build's strengths and weaknesses
- the basic strategy you need to adopt
- when each skill can be used most efficiently
- how you can upgrade this build from lvl1 up to lvl20
- what kind of equipment you might want to use or to trade for
Basically my suggestion is to provide some ropes for beginners who want to start playing the game or a new class.

I agree with all of these previous posts but i would also like to reiterate how nice it would be for a specific forum dedicated to LOCATIONS. Most users get the gist of how to play the game and all but sometimes finding what they're supposed to do is the hardest thing. I know it'd be a ton of work to consolidate so many locations but I think it'd really be worth while.

Salvage guides are difficult because they require a lot of raw data. We'll be lucky if we can just get an idea of the sorts of items and modifiers available out there from what we've gathered over the past weekend. That's because, of course, the only time to find such stuff out is over the beta-weekends. GWO's guide was written when the NDA was a lot less restrictive and alphas could relate findings outside of those weekends. It's probably horribly out-of-date because that flow of information's been stoppered. Come release you can rest assured we'll have something but for now it's just a massive project we don't have the time for, given how likely things are to change and need updating before release.

Here's an idea: An Item Dictionary!!! Half the time when I go to a trader and give him my fetted carprices (or however they are called) I have to do Eenie meenie miney moe and I dont know what I am getting. It would be nice if in so-said Dictionary, each item would have a discription as well as a listing of what it can be salvaged for, as well as a cross referance that you could use to get those Scales I seem to desperately need.
