Types of Damage

I was looking at the skill, Mantra of Flame for the Mesmer class, and was wondering, how are u supposed to tell what type of damage an enemy is using on you? I mean if they are using a skill, or spell, it shows the decrispton right on the screen, but for default attack , I have no idea what damage I'm taking . Is there any way to tell?
