Hi, im new to guild wars and have yet to even play it, although im buying it in 2 days, and am trying to decide what character to make as my first, i am thinking about making a ranger/necro character with lotsa pets/and barrage/other good bow attacks. I would be very grateful to anyone who has made a similar character, and any suggestions, such as skills, which profession should be primary, and i am also curious as to what the best type of necro pets or animals to charm as a ranger, and so on... ok thanks guys!

There are no necro pets that you can tame, just undead you summon for a short time from corpses.

Ranger/Necro is a good combination IMO especially when you bring along Rend Echantments (for PvP)

I wouldn't really go into blood as a Ranger/Necro but I'd put some points in curses. Can't remember what the curses sweet spot is but it's not very high so you don't have to waste too many attribute points there.

you should try N/R instead because of soul reaping so you gain energy back after you kill something or you will find that you may be running out of energy when that fight gets tough. i made my N/R and he works great, you get all the ranger abilities except the low casting cost but when you minions die you get energy back. i don't really see the advantage of going Ranger primary. once you get the 2 minions then you will have an army.

The advantage of ranger primary ? expertise. Reduces energy cost of traps, preperations AND SPELLS, which would include the necro skills, no ?

There aren't many skills that expertise affects outside of Ranger and Warrior lines, so for the most part, No it doesn't affect necro spells.

From my experience expertise does not affect secondary skills.

I play a R/N but so far I've yet to PvP.

R/N wise you can be an insane tank with Parasitic Bond and Trolls Unguent. I think the sweet spot for curses is 3. Early on I haven't found many good spells that don't cost that much (parasitic bond is only 5 energy).

I've only played this char but it seems that secondary really is just that, secondary. I find that I could load myself up with ranger only skills and still be more than satisfied. Part of the dagger of the Necro secondary is that I want to try to use as little energy from that line as possible.

3? You're kidding, right? Curses get better the more you have like anything else - it all depends on what you use them for. Also, expertise DOES affect secondary skills, provided they are attack skills. So you get cheap warrior attack skills, or the only caster attack skill out there - Smite. Ranger/Monks get cheap smites, and Judge's Insight to add to their damage. Ranger Necros can (for example) pump Curses all the way up, drop a Mark of Pain on a target and dual shot it repeatedly to deal area damage, or run Blood and use Order of Pain followed by Barrage to deal a lot of damage quickly to a group.

thanks guys for all the helpful tips, but i should include that im mostly interested in pve not pvp, and also i am curious as 2 why most people dont talk about the other 2 or 3 necro summon skills, forgot names, arent there like 4? so do they cancel out each other or what? oh and thanks again!
