im currently just hunting in SF for chests and greens if i get lucky, with henchies. i see alot of doors with furnace guardians in front, but can't open them. is this part of the final assault quest or something? i havent taken an npc into SF

that's part of final assault indeed, if you take the quest, you'll get a deldrimor dwarf with you who provides you with powder kegs to blast your way through

Yes, it's for final assault. In that quest, you will need an explosive keg from an NPC just like in Borlis Pass.
It's not possible with henchmen BTW, just so you know. I wouldn't want you to be disappointed when you get there.

There are only 4 people you help for "To Sorrow's Furnace", and yes, you get "Final Assault" after it.
