Yeah the southeren shiverpeaks have been pretty lame IMO. FoW chests are extremely hard to come by I know, only 2 in there that randomly move, but the drops are spectacular ive heard. Miner's Chests have gotten me some decent items but some 1k stuff too.

MistressYichi's got about all of them. Basically, the chests will drop the same level of items that enemies in the area will drop, except the chests' items are purple and gold. It's random whether they'll drop rares, or if they'll be close to a portal. Just go run around and find some; don't expect to be able to farm chests easily.

Chests in Shiverpeaks are numerous and easy to sprint to if you are a warrior - all points to strength for extra sprinting time. Quickest run is from Port Sledge, you can sprint to 2 chests in under 2 minutes on a good spawn, then die...like the sorry chest farmer you have become 
...and viola! you will res near Droks and should be able to find another chest close by.
I tried this with about 40 keys....yes I am rich and yes I was very bored. Around 1 in 10 will drop a gold sword/axe...the rest drop gold or purple staffs and off-handers that even the merhants frown upon.

Shiverpeaks chests have netted me pure crap. Three Fow chests gave me a purple non max Chaos Axe, only mod was fire damage, and two Shadow Shields. OOne was req. 13 (yay) and had +12 health, other was req. 11 and had -1 damage while hexed. Two UW chests got me 2 max, but high req. purple storm bows but with crap mods, shocking damage and other has a 10/6 sundering.

I have to tell you guys something about chest farming (dont try to correct me if you dont beleive me...just try it first before posting something like 'omg its random dude' (and Im trying to help you). If your in a group on fow, uw or sorrows always let someone else open the chest first. If they get purple dont waste a key because that chest will drop all purple from then on. If they get gold use your key as everyone will get gold. If you dont believe me try it then tell me im right and by the way Im not saying Im the first to notice this but I think my post about sorrows chests describing this phenomenon was.

Was in UW and went to first chest and everybody got purples, 2nd chest and all golds.

Hello, I'm Seissor and I'm a key junkie. Its been about a month since I last bought a key. I originally blew 80k on keys...and made 30k profit....I used that to buy more keys >.<

From what I've seen, some chests DO drop better items (on average) than others.
The order I've noticed is (from best to worst)
1. Obsidian chests
2. Phantom Chests (?) - I don't spend a lot of time in the UW, so I'm not sure here.
3. Miner's Chests
4. Darkstone chests/Shiverpeak Chests
5. Elonian Chests.
Now, I've seen absolutely worthless stuff drop from obsidian chests just as quickly as from elonian chests. My strategy is: Starting at Droknar's (assuming you played the game through and got there via dragon's lair instead of a runner), I purchase ONE key (and if I get more via drops, great). Now, If I see a chest, I'll usually not be the first to open it, but rather, wait until someone else does. If that chest drops a purple, I leave it alone. If it drops a gold, I open it. (The chests follow a pattern: if it drops a purple, they're ALL purple, same with gold).
Only exception to the one key rule for me is FoW or UW. I take two keys with me down there.
As for the other keys, that you get before the desert, just sell em back to the merchants. They're not worth the gold cost imo. (Heck, even the other keys aren't really worth the gold cost, but the chance of getting something good is a lot better.)
Just my two gold pieces.

The Southers Shiverpeaks chests as mentions are easy to get to from port sledge and can net you some good items. I happened to get lucky and get a really good staff for my monk out of one, and a really good wingblade sword out of another one, but they have been pretty much hit or miss. they seem to drop more caster stuff than anything for me anyway. Yes i have farmed and sold some good drops so i have money in the game, but i always try to keep about 3 keys on me for whatever area i go into.

I never buy keys, theyre a waste of money even using my tip for getting the golds. The fact is even golds from chests are usually either rubbish or for the wrong profession type. If I find a key I either weigh up whether or not to sell it or use it next time the chance arises incase I find a nice item or rune. I have found most of my best golds from drops than in chests.

Buy 1 before you go into FoW, UW. Go with the group, collect your Ecto, Shards. When you eventually find a chest; DO NOT USE YOUR KEY! Sell it do the dirty key junky who's dirty key lust has hasn't been satiated by that Rare Grim Cesta. If you wait til the 2nd chest, when most people have used their keys, you might even be able to have an in-game auction, selling you key to the highest dirty-key-junky bidder. I've made several platinum feeding dirty key junkies their dirty drugs.
Make some money... Become a dealer!!

I've gotten quite good at locating chests. I go to FoW solo, with my W/Mo,
usually bring at least 2 keys. to the post who said there are only 2 chests in FoW is full o crap, ive been where Ive seen 3 numerous times. Anyway, solo FoW runnin around, mobs do NOT chase very far. If you see a chest you open it, now sometimes you get purple and that sucks, and since your alone you cant have someone else open the chest. So you just suck it up and waste 1400 gold. It's actually quite fun to solo. if you dont believe me for whatever reason here are some screens. 1 is with my w/mo as a w/r (Before i switched to w/mo, which is easier)
this is a chest you DO NOT EVER WANT TO OPEN, if there are ppl in a party let one of them open it, ALWAYS is PURPLE. I've opened maybe 10 chests in this location. if you dont know where it is, look ahead of me the path leads to

if fow has the best chest, there is a major problem. on my last run, i found 3 obsidian chests(i only had 2 keys =/) and here is what i got.one req 12 holy rod with 7% improved casting speed. the other chest gave me a req 13 warhammer with 18<50. thats sure seems like 3k well spent.
