it is that hard :P
hardest mission on game.. you gotta use tactics...
get someone to cary the torch, (warroir) and get the monks to heal him.. all the mursatt, ect will attack the warroir with torch, while everyone else can attack them from behind without gettin hurt. (get a necro with blood is power or blood ritual) to keep the monks full with energy.
hope it works..

-sigh-
here is what you do:
take henchmen.
in the siege:
stand in the middle, and kill whoever is coming.
if you are overwhelmed/the mursaat boos is coming, run up to the king and fight there.
once you pass the mursaat boss, you pretty much won.
i beat this mission this way with all of my pve characters (3).
this mission is hyped.

Ah-AH HA HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA! (Sorry.)
Really, though. Take henchmen. Don't go after bosses first.

Hell Marauder
It's very doable with henchmen. Just follow these rules:
1. Take out those frost giants on top of wall first before opening the gate.
2. After the cinema, don't light up the beacon, immediately go outside the right gate killing a single group of jade armor/bow/mursaat hanging outside, and the following group of frost giants. Then immediately return to stay close to the King, never to leave him alone again.
3. Always kill those jade armor/bow/mursaat first, and ALWAYS kill level 28 bosses LAST. This target priority is very very important !!!
4. Always target jade armor/bow/mursaat ahead of white mantles, because jade armor/bow/mursaats were given strict order to head directly toward the dwarf king and have to be dealt with first.
5. Best defense position? Stay right next to the dwarf king! You'll be fighting bad guys coming up the stairs left and right. Trying to keep dwarf king in your circle so the hench monks can heal him.
I've done this mission with hench only for my mesmer and ranger characters. It's not hard if you know what's coming.

Conan The Castrater
Agree with Hell Marauder. With my 1st character I tried it 10 times with PuGs, more than half never even made it to the fort. Tried it 1st time with hencheis only and got through. Thunderhead is a good bottleneck for players to spruce up on their abilities to play the game. Like actually killing the correct targets (ie with bosses kill minions 1st, take casters before warrior/rangers, etc). Having helped guild members do this over 10 times 1st time with hencheis only I'll have to disagree with you on one point Hell. You can still kill the mantle casters 1st, as long as you get within aggro range of the jade/mursaat before theyre in kings aggro range theyll 9 times out of 10 ignore the king.

My tactic (i completed mission and bonus 2 weeks ago):
-take 7 henchs
-when the cinematic ends light up the beacons
-stay with the king and fight as they come; you will never fight more than 4-5 enemies
-kill mursaats first, jade last
-always kill the boss last, no matter his class; if you focus on the monk mursaat boss and ignore regular enemies, you get outnumbered, because more groups come
-dont stay too close to the king, sometimes if enemies are too close he get mad and starts fighting by himself
I completed mission+bonus with my r/mo and 7 henchs with no troubles at all.
I think throw dirt and dust trap made things a lot easier against the jades.
