FYI: You Can't Charm The Bull in the Pond

I tried it last night, and I was unable to charm the bull in the pond (Old Miller's bull). It would be nice to charm it, but I guess since it is a quest beast it would leave to paradoxial quest problems - you can't kill your own pet directly. Also for those ranger folks beast mastery seems to directly affect how agressive your beast is. At a level 0 borrowed beast mastery a charmed lv 5 stalker will attack when it gets around to it. On my M/R with about a 2/3 beast mastery (didn't play him last night) my Lv 8 stalker would attack as soon as I targeted something.

Also, bears are hard to charm by yourself even when trapped by inaccessible(sp) terrain. I tried to charm a lone bear (in regency forest) but his "break charm" was too strong for my 0 beast master ability. I might try again after I sub-professionalize my warrior in the ranger ways.

So sad about the bull - I would abandon the quest to charm him.

You can't charm the bear, thats what the charm break ability is for. If you read it it says something about "for animals that are not meant to be charmed" (paraphrasing). I forget which website it was on, but people in large groups of spellcasters and distruptors have tried but it alsways broke the charm.

Would be cool if they allowed it in the future, but for now i dont think you can. There aren't even any bears in new ascalon (that I've seen).

Update: I found this, think its a fake cause of the screen shot, but i could be wrong

Supposedly it's been done quite a few times already. Some guy asked me to help him charm a bear, and if it weren't for my inability to correctly time things, I think we would have succeeded. Anyway, he said that he and his other friend had already done it, but now he wanted a bear too. In fact, the one time it was timed correctly the last ability *just* killed the bear

Supposedly, sounds like rumors and conjecture to me, j/k.
But seriously, the fact is there is no "this bear is not an animal something something" red text when it's not charmable, like the Bull, so please share the tactics used.

what is the timming you are refering to?

what spell combos would be needed to slow down a bear?

or how to draw agro to your partner?

is the other character a ranger too, with their pet helping?

I tried refunding all my points to just beast mastery (6), and couldn't do it solo lvl 6 ranger, trying out warrior, and mesmer skills before choosing secondary prof, that's for sure.

Faintheartedness slows down the bear's attack rate. this does not slow down his ability to use the skill, however it does open up the window of time you have between the last attack and when he starts a "brutal mauling".

if you cast "charm animal" at the right moment, you can get 4-5 seconds in before he finishes the "brutal mauling". you need a war/mo to use bane signet at the right moment to knockdown the bear before he finishes this attack. this buys you another second or two. and then the war/mo needs to use a hammer bash at the split second before the bear is fully up but can be knocked down again. if you time it perfectly, you can get the charm bar through 9 out of the 10 seconds. that last second is just luck. unfortunately, my friend and i did not have enough patience for that last second, as we could only get the timing perfect on maybe 1 out of 10 tries..

beastmastery level has no effect whatsoever on the charm skill. as long as the war/mo is between you and the bear, you probably will not get aggro..
