Male Players playing Female Characters?
aismailuk
Since there is a thread already about female players playing male characters, i was just wondering the reasons behind why male characters play as female characters?
R1p70r
Well personally i play a female warrior as one of my characters and the reason for that is i just don't like to models for the male warriors.
Xenrath
I dare say probably most female chars are in fact guys irl. Probably because they want something nice to look at while playing, and also there's the more devious side that girls get preferential treatment by guys (fact of life). Hence the more unscrupulous elements take advantage of this.

I dont want to stare at men's asses all day
male characters dont have suduction type dances
male warriors look fat in certain types of armor
female monks have a certain healing touch
japanese names just sound more mystical on females
there arnt any latino/asian men
kinda i want to, maybe just for tonight, we can pretend its all right; whats the price i pay? i dont care what they say, i want to

I'm too in the ways of alter-egos (Although I don't go anywhere near furries, gah). I just find it more comfortable playing female characters. Sides, I'm not online to pick up girls, unlike most guys.

Because the myth is true: there are no real women on the internets much less in video games. Therefore brave young men must pay the ULTIMATE PRICE and make female avatars so online video games aren't one giant sausage factory. (even though they :0)
All joking aside, I'm not too sure.

When creating a character, I am doing just that. Not my own alter-ego. I think what the character is going to be like, what sort of experiences the character might have had, what the character's morals and aims in life might be, and then stick a gender onto it afterwards (not... literally, because that would just be weird). As such I have an equal number of males and females on all the RPGs I play. Though, my main character is always a male.

Nuff said.

As a guy, I've got 3 male characters and 1 female character. Nothing wrong with that. Female warrior designs are more appealing then male warrior designs. And yes, I do stare at my female warrior sometimes. God damn she's hot.

Since this game is in 3rd person I play female characters so I don't have to look at my male character's hairy butt all the time.

I don't play a female (I am a guy) but if I did it would be because of the following:
Better looking armor
Better dances (I love the thriller dance)

Have you ever, in your life, seen an attractive male warrior in the game that was male? No, you haven't. So my warrior is female. And hot.
Have you ever, for that matter, seen an attractive female ranger? No, you haven't. They all look like redneck hillbilly women. No offense to hillbilly's. So my Ranger is a male. And he's hot.
My PVP slot changes, so that hardly counts, and... lastly...
Have you ever seen an ugly Necromancer of either gender? No you haven't. Mine happens to be male. And he's damn gorgeous.
It's all opinion, anyway. My gorgeous necro may be hideous to you. And I don't care.

For a long time its been a play style thing. Think for me it all started with Blaze in Streets of Rage 2. She just destroyed everything in her path and suited my play style the best. This sort of trend carried into every fighting game that came out: Chun Li in SFII, Seung Mina in SC etc etc. A same sort of trend in RPGs, my other big genre. Anywhere I either had a female lead, or the option to create one, they usually also had skills and abilities tuned just how I would have liked them to be.
Fast forward now to Guild Wars. No real play style reason at all to choose one model over the other. Just preference. Habits die hard though, so all my characters are female. Coincidentally, the female models in this game are also pretty styling.

Among all the other reasons given, there's also the fact that it's amusing to see a tiny little woman kick the bejeezus out of a huge monster. =)

I have a couple of female characters for somewhat practical reasons:
Ranger - I already had a male archer ranger and created a Ra/Wa as a melee combatant so picked female so they would not look the same. This was before Anet did away with the whole "refund point" system. Since then I deleted the male ranger since the female had progressed further into the game.
Necromancer - I chose female because the males were just too unappealing, no matter what you tried to choose for a look.

I still play my main male character but I doubt I will be making another male character again. I have since created a female character of my own & been playing it. I have only had to deal with pervs 3 times so far but I haven't had to deal with... I would say 75% of the negativity I would be expierencing if I was using a male character. As a female character I get more respect, as a female character players work harder to give me aid when I need it, as a female character ppl are more willing to listen, as a female character I can enjoy the game more as it was intended to be played, as a female character ppl treat me nicer. RE the female mesmer.... doh! She's is the hottest female model in the game! Most guys(I spose some women too) think the FemEle's are the hot stuff....not IMO. The sexy one is the FemMesmer & the cute one is the FemMonk. FemEle's are sl*ts. =D Okay the last paragraph is meant to be somewhat humourous so plz.... all you FemEle lovers can just relax. =D |

My main is always male, but my secondary is almost always a female. Usually they're cuter, have more appearance modifiers (clothes, dances, hairstyles, etc.), and it is fun to play a powerful diminutive, feminine character.
So, my main is a male ranger, my secondary is female mesmer. My monk character though I created female just because I dig the female monk dance.

In games with first person view I don't care about the gender, but in third person view females are much easier on the eyes.

I tend to get along with people better online with female chars. There will always be pervs, but eh, I'm used to it. You can even do what girls nomrally do and have fun with them. XD
But that's just me.

I play a male ranger and monk, and female elementalist and necromancer.
Variety (in appearance and emotes) is my only reason for choosing a 'toon.

Let's be honest: female armour looks better, female hair looks better - and indeed, many guys just give you more credit or treat you better when you're a girl

My first (and main) char is a male ele, simply because it was an attempt at an alter-ego. I have no regrets at all, because the male 15k armor looks way better than the females does anyways.
I made a male ranger, because a female ranger just didnt feel right. Male necros clearly have the best emotes in the game, so thats a no-brainer there, plus their armor looks very nice.
the only chars that ive ever made female were warriors and mesmers, classes that i'm not too fond of anyways, and only because endgame male mesmers and warriors are still incredibly ugly.
monks are kind of on the fence here, as i really wouldnt mind playing either gender.

I think you'll find a majority of guys playing as girls are playing girls they'd like to be with, not be.

Wow, who cares, seriously...as if your personality, sexual preference, or anything else about you has anything to do with what sex you pick for an RPG character in an online video game. Even if it did, what does that matter?

I enjoy controlling a female

I've very guilty of this myself. I agree with a lot of the posters, female character have way better armor.
I also don't engage in any flirting or worse stuff nor do I ever lie about my real gender if asked. I also don't care what gender is female playing male, male playing female, etc. It how they behave / how they play. (insert terms here) are still (insert terms here) no matter what gender.

The female chars armor looks better, they have a better base model than most of the males do, some of the FoW and 15k armors look much better on the female counterparts than on the males, not to mention its fun running around with a female char sometimes.
Traveller
I play one female character too, a mesmer. Why not? This, after all, a role-playing game (although many aspects contradict this).
The weirdest argument about this topic was at another GW board where one guy openly flamed that every male player who has a female character is a transvestite.

Im used to playing female chars form table top cause of teh bonuses.. D&D and shadow run gave females due to smaller size a better "hide/escape" bonus.
