I spent some time last night and this morning working on an RSS scrape for the current news section of the Guild Wars site. The scrape is written in php.

Pic.

If anyone is interested in helping me beta-test this kludgy, first version, I'd appreciate it. The first 10 people who reply to this thread will get a PM from me with the URL.

If you are one of the 10, please let me know if you find any bugs or formatting issues by replying to this thread, or sending me a PM or email. If you have screenshots, post or PM me a link, or email it to me as an attachment. I've only tested this with the Sage plugin in Firefox, so I'm curious how well it works in other feedreaders.

Thanks,
eugaet

I love to try it out, this be a great feature for a site like GW Guru, other then that it be easier then me having to check the Guild Wars website while at work. Count me in.

OK, sent everyone who replied a PM with the link. Thanks for offering to test it out. So far, those testing are:

Fate
Kariston
chris_nin00
Demonstar
Guardian of the Light
RTSFirebat
Monica Angelina
EternalTempest
Sniperz53

That's 9, which I suppose is really more than enough for testing something like this, although the more the merrier. Here's some of the info from my old thread in the OT section (which was posted there because I was impatient with the validation ):

----------

The php script I sent the link to returns an XML document. You need to have a feedreader/aggregator installed, or use a web-based one, and supply it with the link I sent.

I've tested it with the Sage plugin for Firefox, Google Reader, and Google Personalized Home. Seems to work so far.

Feedreaders/News Aggregators:
What they are: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aggregator
Where to find them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_news_aggregators

Hopefully, Anet will have a few news updates over the next week or so which will give those of you testing it out to see if the feed updates OK. In the meantime, I'll be cleaning up and streamlining the script...so if it suddenly stops working, give it about 30 minutes or so before you notify me. Chances are, I'm well aware of the screwup I just made and am currently fixing it. I'll be working off of a copy (well, should be working off of a copy), but you never know.

If all goes well, I'll publish the link in CW next weekend. After that, I'll set up an RSS feed for the Game Updates section of the GW website. Any other sections of the GW site which might benefit from a feed?

Again, thanks to those of you who offered to give it a test run. This is cool...I'm feeling all useful and stuff.

Oooooo-kay. What you saw is correct, that is how it should show up in your browser. However, if you plugged that link into a feedreader or news aggregator, it'll show up in a readable format...that format depending on how your feedreader/aggregator displays the XML file.

Please read my previous post to this thread. And, if you would be so kind, please edit your post to remove all that XML. Thanks.

On an aside...is it just me or...[plotting] is there no RSS feed for the GWG Community News? [/plotting]

Wanted to post a screenshot of my current development feed:

Hopefully, I'll get this version out to the testers in the next day or so.

Worked on pulling in the image-link at the top of the news section...not sure how well that will work going forward, but we'll find out, won't we? Cleaned up some of the other regexes to pull the entries a bit more precisely. Next, to wrap up a few repetitious areas into functions. And more cleanup. But for now...sleep.

i run several php nuke sites, it has rss built into it, people can even add their own feeds, look in your blocks section, their are some preinstalled rss feeds for different sites, if a site has a rss, or sometimes it appears as"backend.php" as a link somewhere, this is something you can set for you site thru your preferances, this is usually done on the "portal side" of the nuke package. I believe that you can even allow members to add their own rss feeds that only they see.

If you view the link in your browser, in most cases you will see the output of my script (which is XML, btw). Your feedreader/aggregator will make this output look pretty. Thank you for making me a beta tester - here some results

Albion (the RSS program I like) - Looks great. Not sure how you get those little icons for the main feed link like the others.

Oprea - Web Browser RSS - Not showing the fancy first letter images.

Will be doing more testing.

If anyone needs some free rss programs - http://www.webattack.com/freeware/mi...readers_r.html

HTML Code:
<strike>Which icons? The caps or the little word bubble that shows in my screenshots? The caps are pulling straight from the GW site. I had to have the script rework the image urls to make sure it pointed to an absolute rather than relative path.</strike>
Oh, you mean the little favicon looking ones in the sidebar. Hmmm...

Well, that's no good, is it? You'd think it would display the alt text for the caps images. Is RSS built in to Opera? Looks like I'll need to install it to do some testing myself.

Thanks for the feedback!

With Opera it may be an issue that doesn't allow images to load in the RSS text section (but allow html code for links and such). The RSS support is built in as part of opera. Of all the feeds I've seen, not seen any images in Opera to date.

With Albion, the icon I was referring too was the Feed Tree (far left column) with the different feeds listed. Example: The register feed has the carrion logo, it's giving the "default" xml icon for your feed. Not sure how it works.

You may need to grab someone who is beta testing IE 7. Next version of IE will have RSS support built in. As soon as IE 7 is "public" beta I can test it.

You’re doing a great job. It may be the same problems that html code has, lose standards. It's going to be the RSS newsreaders that support the most standards, Atom, RSS1, RSS2, etc built in that will display the best I think. But if you test and tweak enough across the board, you should do fine.

Hiya,

I'm using the Thunderbird RSS Reader to read 5 other RSS feeds and they work fine. However, with the beta feed, I do not get any images...

Am I doing something wrong?

If applications aren't yet closed, I'd be happy to help test. I'd be using the RSS feed reader built into Windows Vista.

Yeah, I figured that out not two seconds after submitting my last post, but the forum suffered a hiccup and wouldn't let me edit it. I have half an idea that that is the favicon that is displayed. I think every feed that is run from my domain has to have the same favicon. I'll look into it, but it's not very high on the priority list right now.

OK, that's two readers that won't show the images...hmmm. I'll clean up the script a little more before I start testing it myself on various readers. Thanks for the feedback!

PM to be sent to Mo/R9 in a few...

I just updated the script. It should now pull the Guild Wars World Championship image and link from the top of the news section, as well as scrape the championship link for extra info on the event.

If there is no event info at the top, it shouldn't scan any pages other than the home page. Shouldn't. Guess we'll see what happens when ANet either changes or removes the event from the news section.

For those having issues with images, the text should show up just fine...you just won't have that nice, large image taking up space in your reader window.

The script is still kludgy, in my opinion, though...so I'm still working on cleaning it up. But it looked like a good place to update the testers.

I took a look at Opera during lunch today. Uncheck the following setting to see the graphics. I think it could be a per feed setting...external embeds are disallowed by default for security.

You'll also notice the little icon that now shows up in the tab. It should also show up in Abilon. What was that I said about it not being a priority? I was bored, what can I say?

I also tried out Thunderbird...and didn't have any problems viewing the images. Monica, the images show up fine with the other 5 feeds, but not in my beta feed? Which version do you have installed? I tested it with 1.07.

Here's a screen shot with the RSS block ability of the Dragonfly Portal. (www.cpgnuke.com). Looks great

Thank you for letting me test it on our Guild page.

A Guild Wars RSS feed? That'd be pretty cool.

I use Sharp Reader and Opera for my RSS feeds.

It's be fun to test out. Though it seems you've reached your beta tester limit.

Nice site, Eternal. I'll have to check out Dragonfly...looks pretty good. I liked the phpBB integration.

I hope to release the RSS link to everyone some time this week. I got sidetracked this past weekend by starting *another* side project and then real-life intruded. After I get it done, I'll be setting up a feed each for Game Updates, Network Updates, and the Guild Ladder.

Thank You
Used Php Nuke untill I got hacked >< then switched to CPG Nuke (now called Dragonfly).

They pretty took Php nuke around 6.5 and rewrote the entire thing for speed and security and made the coppermine photo gallery (and still keep there's upto date) + phpbb integrated into the portal.

I checked and saw that I had 1.02, LOL. I upgraded and still have the same problem. I think it might be a problem where the images are stored. Some of the banners don't show up on my browser either. So this might be entirely related to how webtraffic is filtered through the network where I tried this. I will try it on a less restricted network and it'll prolly work better.

I now have it incoorporated into the right hand side of my site, www.guildwarsrealm.net to view it!

Thanks a ton and hopefully I can get this integrated with my news to feed it directly to my site!

OK, I made what I hope is the final changes to the script tonight before I hand out the link to everyone. Those of you who are beta-testing, let me know if all goes well.

I removed the dates from the titles and set those as the pubDate for each item, so entries should now be tagged with the actual date it was published on the GW site. Wasn't really any way for me to figure out the hour it was posted, so all entries will be marked with the same hour...but the mm/dd/yy should be correct. Except for Opera...for all entries, it shows the date you last checked the feed. Oh well. The event at the top will always have current date for a timestamp...if your feedreader can sort by date, that'll always keep it at the top.

Please give me some feedback so we can get this feed made public!

I like the changes you made it seems to make it alot more cleaner and more prefessional looking.

I for one would like to give you a big thanks for arranging this wonderful peace of guild wars data and I hope to see more projects like this in the near future.

The only thing I noticed about the change with the dates is that new entries will now show the 'main event' (currently World Championship) below any entry that is posted on the current day, for those aggregators that order by published date. I only noticed this with Abilon.

For instance, on 11/22, the entries were listed with GotW#26 first (posted on 11/22), then the World Champ event. Today, the World Champ event was moved to the top (the 'main event' published date is always the current date), while GotW#26 was bumped to second. Is this change with the way my script is handling dates causing any problems for the testers? Or is it a non-issue? Personally, I figured it'd be fine, but wanted to know what the testers thought.

Anyway, if I don't here any complaints from the testers in the next few days, I'll go ahead and open it up to the public. And then I'll work on the other feeds.

I just posted a new thread in CW for the public release of the Current News RSS link. It'll be available to everyone once the post is authorized. I'll continue to use this thread for testing other RSS scripts in development. Thanks to all who helped me test this first script, and to those of you who have been patient in waiting for me to finally release it.
