I hate groups. Seriously i just cant stand having to go around with people or henchies. Its a personal issue that makes it hard for me to enjoy the game and im pissed of with myself for it.
I just hate having other people farting about and stealing kills and saying words and crap like that, while im trying to play. Even the henchies get on my nerves, i always feel like im cheating or something when i us them.

I hear ya, I'm almost the same way. The amount of arrogance has really shyed me away from PUGs now. Apparently, everyone is perfect and it's always someone else's fault when they die. Just stupid.

I feel the same way sometimes, it seems more fun to have my character go rogue and explore the lands of Tyria solo style than to go with henchies, or worse yet, PUGs. Henchies are stupid, and pug players always feel like you're wasting their time if you're not killing so-and-so, going certain places, equiping certain skills, resing him/her, healing him/her, etc..

What I think is that maybe you need a different game that you can play solo. (ex. doom 3, Final Fantasy etc...) Because, seriously, there is no way that you can finish other Missions just by doing it yourself.

My one true advice to you is to just try to enjoy this game atm. Try to enjoy hearing people in your group BS the hell out of ya'll. Try to laugh when you hear a warrior in your group say "LET MEEEE NUKE 'EM!!!"

About Henchies, think of them as a "get away" from playing with other people who really suck with their profession. Using henchies isn't cheating whatsoever. The DEVS put them there because they know sometimes, people aren't as reliable as AI's.

Hope this helps a bit. GL to ya!

I totally agree that PUG's are filled with the most pretentious and arrogant people in the game; I have broken these people down into groups:

1) The "pseudo-leaders": these guys are generally the people who start the group, but it is not uncommon for them to also be brought into a group and ursurp power. They "know" exactly who they want in the group and know how everyone in the group should play their characters; and they will let you know. These people generally leave missions early right after blaming one specific person for the failure of the group i.e. "Nice job nuker" or "That monk can't heal for sh**". Rarely do they ever contribute to the game anything more than obnoxious attacks on other player's lack of skill.

2) The "rank-monkeys": You know who they are. They hang out in tombs and say things like "rank three or higher or don't bother whispering", but in caps, and sometimes preceeded by the word "IWAY". They have won 2 out of their last 20 tomb runs, it has been mostly their fault, and they are frustrated.

3) "Bueller? Bueller?": They join a group, then get up, make themselves lunch, turn on the TV, and take a nap. Sometimes they pull this silly crap mid-game or (mutter obscenity) when they are holding the quest item.......thanks guys.

4) The "true noobs": These guys I probably actually dislike the least, while they don't know exactly what's going on, at least they are honestly trying. Generally they will either figure out whats going on or leave early because one of the "pseudo-leaders" is spamming insults at them.

It's too bad that instead of a rank system their isn't a system to tell how courteous or cooperative other players are going to be in this game. Until then we're stuck with PUGs or retarded henchmen.

I agree. I hate pugs...I have only been in 2..and they sucked. Mind you I am the ever-so-hated warrior (It's my 5th char and war was the last one I chose to play as). So I knew from the start I would be going it alone. Which is why I chose monk as my secondary. Gotta love getting blamed by the monk who decides to agro a mob of jades and murssats (when none of us are infused), promptly dies and then picks your name off the party list (guess it just stuck out more than the others...) to say "wow (insert char name here) you're horrible". "You suck". "I'm telling everyone how badly you suck when I get back to town". At least I got the satisfaction of seeing him beg for a party an hour later. I had picked up a half team of henchies and done the mission in no time. I hate henchies as well, which is why with the exception of 5 or 6 missions I have done them solo. That's what's nice about having played the game with my other chars first..I know what to expect..when to stop, when to go, what skills... etc. I am currently stuck though..and I need to use henchies...boo. Quite frankly I have started to find it rather amusing how much hate the warriors get...ya I agree there are a lot of them that suck really bad. However, I see just as many people from other professions who do just as poorly a job.

But, whatever. I have strayed from the topic at hand. I humbly beg thee for mercy. Point being...in this game, I am a loner as well.

But not all PUG are bad! I must say I got most help from them and they were patient with me when I was a nob!
Of course now I'm in a very good guild which help a lot, but I still join a PUG and try to help if they need a specific profession .... especially when they are doing the last three missions and no one answer they call!

Anet doesn't call it a MMORPG, they call it a Competitive Online Role Playing Game (CORPG). Although the RPG part is pushing it a bit.

I may go with PUGs when I'm desperate or bored, but most of the time I'm either soloing something or doing it with friends. I've dealt with enough random jerks already.

GW is a MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role playing game), and if you dont like to play with random pugs that you find in a town/outpost and you dont like hench then take some guild mates. They seam to usually do better than random pugs. Random pugs always have issues "Who knows mission? Common dude, rez! No one knows mission?*person leaves*" and crap like that, but with guildmates, you know that you can always yell/be mad at them and let your anger/thoughts out at those certain guildmates. I did most of desert and maguuma jungle with guildmates. They were better than most pugs I've been with.

I like to solo myself, yet the multiplayer aspect of trading and completing endlevels with parties is very usefull and its fun to chat with guildmembers (well, sometimes)
But I admit I don't like the necessity to enter team missions to advance to new regions.
Anyway, if you like to play solo try the cute diablo1 clone: Fate.

They are playing guildwars and probaly as a ranger. It is not uncommon for a ranger to get a baddie down to 10%-15% health then have a warrior run up and stand over the kill as if they did it, sometimes delivering the last blow and taking credit for the kill or just standing there as the baddie hits the ground creating the impression they are responsible for the kill. Also when barraging a mob, again as the mob is at 10% life a johnny come lately nuker rains down firestorm or metor giving the visual that they are responsible for the kill.

Pugs for PvE are generally not that bad, though some are. I have been in some very nice ones in the main missions and in the Fissure of Woe. But Pugs in Tombs tend to be either pretty bad or fairly unpleasant.

I think that some of those that hate playing with other people so much (like the person to start this thread) may just be a little lacking when it comes to being tolerant and sociable towards others. Being pleasant yourself will help when trying to find other friendly people, and this will help get you make friends in the game fast too.

But no matter how friendly you are, you will encounter people that are either somewhat deranged, drunk, mentally challenged, or utterly obnoxious in pugs often. If you are in a normal group with some of these, kick them, or ask the leader to kick them. Some easy to spot signs that this is such a player.
"GOGOGO!!!!!"
"nOObs, hehe"
"Look at my t*ts" (or other stuff like that)
"RANGER [or any other profession) YOU TAKE [skill X]" (without asking about that person's build first).
"TAKE WORRIOR/MONK FFS!"
"I wnat tak allz get whep fr lot mony" Or other completely incomprehensible stuff.
"WTF?" (Not 100% accurate, but not a good sign)
"OMFG" (A dead give away)
"All do as I say" (when they did not start the group)
"I am drunk/stoned/high, lol!"
"Me pown you all"
All offensive names
Not saying hello when the rest say hello.

Just get rid of these players, and you will form a fairly good group soon enough. And for the harder missions, ask a friend that knows it to come along if needed. PVE will be more fun that way.

For tombs, send whispers to people asking for someone. But this does not always work. Being polite helps a lot, still. Don't expect others to be polite in return, but do not join or invite those that are not.

Well, I guess none of these are always a sure sign by themselves ((I know one fellow guildy that says WTF a lot, but he is ok, really), but people that put the F-word in every sentence they use are either trying to be cool too hard or frustrated about something and eager to vent their anger in the game...

And look at my T*ts... oh well, some people find this line amusing after a long time still... And I suppose they must be hilarious, really.

Wait till chapter 2 comes out and everyone is helpful due to everything being new again like when in launched. It will become the same way again after Chapter 2 comes out.

If you want an nice offline break, try Morrowind (elder scrolls 3) or the soon to be released Oblivion (elder scrolls 4).

I must admit I'm a bit of a loner when it comes to getting human groups.

Even though the henchies are dumbasses I tend to use them for all common quests. On Galrath and other major quests I found groups, and I always do missions with groups. I guess maybe I should do more common quests with people but I just see it as increasing the time it takes.
For me there are some times when I'm nearly shouting at the henchmen YOU STUPID IDIOT AI WHY ARE YOU RUNNING THAT WAY but there are also times when I get seriously pissed off with human groups.

I have to say I'm not a fan of PUG's too. I only use it when it's neccasery.

I went to UW last night and I started my own group. I told them first before we go in the strategy how we're gonna do it.
Once there, we had a Leroy Jenkins necro, a leeching nuker, a monk luring the groups, a solo monk (although I asked him if he's a healer monk and he said yes), 1 warrior who didn't know what the hell was happining to him when the black minotaur attacked him and a noob ele who took the quest to early although he claims he completed UW twice.

Needless to say we didn't last long.

hmmmm...Anet describes their product as a competitive online role playing game. Its been bunched up over and over again with MMORPGs.

So what does it mean to be one over the other?
And why the sudden change on what a society of gamers have already defined?

This is my take on their rational.

Massive? With districts and instances and small teams it doesnt fell massive. Especially when put next to games that are labeled Massive.

Multiplayer? Of course.
Online? If is online, that implies that its multiplayer. Scratch multiplayer out.

Role Playing Game? I think the whole world needs to rethink what this means.
I was discussing in another thread that, if a player or group of players were interested enough, they could roleplay Gauntlet or Zelda or even Mortal Combat.
If we start labeling them as roleplaying games, maybe some people will bite and roleplay through them.
A game cant make you roleplay.
It can be designed in such a way that roleplaying is fostered.
The best way to insure roleplaying is to control the community of players.
Do to constrictions of early single player rpgs roleplaying meant - story, quest, level up, adjust attributes and buy/earn equipment.
So today, when we have the technology to actually create games that enforce roleplaying, the old association of what a rpg was is still with us.
In this since of the words, GWs is a roleplaying game.
The thing is, GWs does so many things different that maybe its misleading to even place this game in the current inaccurate definition of the words - roleplaying game.

However, in the end, fighting the general understanding of what an rpg is could be counter productive. Especially when your already fighting the general understanding of what an online rpg is.

Competitive? From the ground up.

Arrange what sticks so it sounds good and you get - Competitive Online Role Playing Game.
Although, it would behoove people to understand the game not as a CORPG but instead, a CO(RPG).

Bad Karma Resurrection [BKR]

I seem to be the exception to most ppl.
I play mostly in PUGs. Why?

Because I am mostly to be found in ToA or War Camp. In War Camp id do take the henchies sometimes when it seems to be "obnoxous cretin" night
In FoW/UW it's all about team play.

I don't consider myself a NooB in team play at all and know my characters strengths and weaknesses very well, though I am always learning new tricks to improve. The most dramatic learning curve came during the crystal desert part of the game where I first started playing PUGs/ I had always used henchies up to that. It was also where I met the most annotying PUGs. I think I was a typical player for that region at the time. Which meant I was discovering a lot about the game and my char. and really wanting to do well, but not sure if I was doing things right at all times. Shoot, I still make mistakes at times (cast a BiP when a FOE Elemetatlist is about to wail on you as a Nec is a bad thing)

Thing is, the greater majority of the game PUGs have been fun. I feel most comfortable when there is a lot of pre-start chatter...

"Who's our healer?"
"Are you taking this skill or should I take...?"
"**** Will call targets"
"When we 1st spawn, Dont talk to the hero!"
"Hi!"
etc etc etc

I think you have some personal things to deal with socialially, but are like most everyone in that you dont like to be insulted or feel you dont know whats going on. Don't be so personally stressed or I'd worry that you could become one of the folks that give PUGs a bad name with such a self focused approach to GW. This IS a team game.

As for PvP, well thats a different story...

Well I'm not aware of any number associated with massive. GW does have towns were people trade, converse, associate with many people. Yes you only party up with a few...but most MMOs have specific party sizes as well.

Has it dawned on anyone that maybe Anet made up the term 'Competitive Online Role Playing Game' as marketing ploy to set themselves apart from the rest of the popular MMOs? I mean seriously... It's a pretty smart way of distinguishing yourself.
