What mods determine color?
NekoZ
This confused me a bit when I received these two shields. Then it got me thinking that I have seen a purple weapon have a 14% hex (or enchant I really don't remember but no the point) mod and say a gold with a 13%. I don't understand this..

Although the gold shield is only worth 104 gold more at the merchant, it would infact get alot more simply for it's colour.
As for colour determination on shields i am not entirely sure. It's probably a case of it's value in this instance. The higher merchant value allowed it to bump into the "gold band" and thus is coloured gold.

Maybe Skeletons shields are harder to find? And thus golden?

If my experience with identifying items holds correct, the color of the item simply determines the quality range of the mod. For example, purple items will never have 15%>50hp mods, or 5:1 vampiric mods, nor will blues. Gold items simply up the bar on the quality of those mods.
Also, if I remember correctly, the minimum mod is also upped for higher end items, i.e. you'll never find a 1:-1 vamp bowstring on a gold bow.
Sometimes you'll find the highest end purples and the lowest end golds. This would explain finding a bad gold and a better purple of the same type.
From what I've seen, the only item that is never blue or white is a crystalline sword.

Just a quick question, you see mods like: Quick Recovery from Poison/Weakness etc. but is there a difference in how fast you recover per mod?

On weapons, Focus Items and shields the chance for a magical modifier or weapon upgrade increases with rarity. White items will have no upgrades or modifiers, Blue items mostly have one modifier or upgrade, and Purple or Gold items have usually more than one modifier or upgrade.
i have 2 shields, one gives +33 health, one gives +32 health, same condition, both golden.
The shield with +32 health sells for MORE than the shield with +33 health at the merchant!!!

I would say 33% same as the weapon mods (ie: Barbed, Poisoner's)
edit... oh nvm...

I think Lasareth and Ollj are correct. The color of the item determines the chance that it'll have better mods, (as opposed to the mods determining the item's color)... so, for example, maybe purple swords have a 0,1% chance of coming with a +14% mod, and gold swords have a 0,5% chance of coming with the same +14% mod.

Lengthens X duration on foe = +33% condition duration.
mortalis doleo
i found a golden longbow in pre-searing, and it was 15-26 with no extra mods... i've seen plain ones that are better
NekoZ
Hope ya saved that bow, since every weapon that has a color has to have atleast one mod on it due to an update =p

Didn't fix the existing weapons though, so at most he would be able to sell it to crazy rich people who collect all sorts of oddities.
IceD'Bear
I think rarity also depends on where an item drops. High dmg weapons in low level areas will be gold because they are rare there.

When I first began playing, Gold items were the best around. It took about one hundred hours of play before I found my first one, and it rocks...max damage, low req and great (read "useful") mods. I just came across a shield that I would like to share:
What happened to the golds out there. Over farmed? Did I just find some rare dud? I've seen blues better than this.
This is not a complaint, I love this game, updates and all, but I would like to read other's opinions on this.
Thanks

There are lots of items that have similar mods to that. They randomly turn up all over the place. There are mods of "Charrslaying", "Deathbane" (vs undead), "Pruning" (vs plants) and "Dwarfslaying" (vs dwarves). All of theses are pretty useless unless you use particular places to farm, such as vs Charr in early missions.
chippxero
IMO as a gold shield it's not great because of that req level but if you just plan on Charr farming then you'll probably have your tactics around that level and extra armour is always nice.
I wish they'd add shield mods, nothing fantastic just the current ones so you can upgrade higher shields.

I've seen these mods in the past, but for a gold item, the mods should be better. It should be more like "Damage received -2 (in stance)", or something similar. +6 vs Charr? C'mon...When you find this in the very late stages of the game, do you really need to worry about Charr? And yes, this could be sold to someone in the early stages of the game, but look at the req. What lvl 7 W/x has that?
Lasareth
Rarity is area-based. A rare item in Old Ascalon is never max, but it is better comparatively to the other items in the region.
Plus, the mods are pretty random as well. They're just, comparatively, better than mods on purples and blues, most of the time. Sometimes, they can be worse :x

It's one thats really only for farmers (people love those fur squares) not something you'd try to use playing through the story (unless the Charr come back in the next chapter).
fgarvin
Are Charr hides actually worth something? I'm guessing 4g each?
Memphis
I've had weapons with +stats vs Skeletons
Not Undead, but specifically Skeletons. Baffled me for bit that did.
Regarding the gold, golds can still have crap stats. The fact though is the armour is +6. Doesn't matter what that +6 is against. +6 stuff with max standard stats will be gold items.
If it was +4 it would be purple.

i got a Crippling Flamberge of Skeletonslaying given to me for FoW it worked really well
Savio
For shields, the gold range is +6 to +8 vs a specific enemy/damage type.
Charr Hides are worth about 50-60g.
Charr Hides are worth about 50-60g.
fgarvin
So I'm dumb....but 50-60g each. Griff wings are only worth 25g each. What gives? I know I must be missing something....
Savio
4 Charr Hides = 1 Fur Square at the Collector in Ascalon City. She's around the storage area.

One would think that the HoH would be the most ideal region in the game to get things from.
All the gold items I've got in Sorrow's Furnace were also garbage.
Based on my own personal experience I am led to believe that the vast majority of gold items that spawn are garbage, regardless of region.
Devs really should fix that.

Gold Chaos Axe of Charrslaying
A really nice Gold Healing staff that improved fire magic
Numerouis gold wands only suitabl for particular two class builds
I play as a War/Mo, Ran/Mo (my favorite character) and Ele/Mes - yet 9/10 the drops are for monk's, necro's and Mesmers with high req's so totally unusable by me, or weapons with high req and bonus while hexed/v hexed which is next to useless. I infact I've only ever found one bow with damage >50% and that was a 13-22 one in the Southern Shiverpeaks - not even max damage even though it was the Iron Mines of Molodune mission, where I'd expect max damage or close to it considering how close to the game end it is (only 4 missions after it).
Even the gold armours only seem to produce major runes most of the time, and on the same mission i got the same rune twice - once from a gold armour, once from a purple armour and worth 25g at the trader.

Rarity of items don't guarantee better quality.
For example, at MacDonald's, occasionally, you get that super hard, over-fried stick in your fries, but it doesn't taste any better than the regular ones.

I got a clean Gold Firey Dragon sword. -shrugs- Worth about 300+ gold at the merchants.

However wouldn't one for Undead work just as well though?
Can't help but still ponder what the difference may be
Carnajo
At the end of the day, gold mods are still random (which is a pity for staff type items, as you often get mixed mods, but then again, the collectors staffs have awesome mods, and upgrades can be bought/found).
Yeah, I also get irritated at "Storm Bows of Pruning", but I still always have a collection of keys for high level chests, causes even if only 1 in 10 drops turns out to be a good one, I've more than doubled my money. Alternatively, selling gold un-id. weapons can also be nice.
I'd still kill for a 20/20 ghostly staff though!

It's gold because you found it in an area where max-armor shields are rare (e.g. Gates of Kryta).
But yeah, mudflation is bad in GW due to the farming and the lack of item sinks. Pretty much everyone's got a full set of max damage/max armor/nice upgrades weapons & offhands now. Items which are not perfect max gold or at least has a perfect upgrade are pretty much worthless (and perfect max golds are ridiculously expensive because people's got tons of cash to spen too, also due to the farming).
There's a thread in the screenshots forum about "post your best weapon". It's a nice example of how mudflation has progressed: the first posts show non-max whites and blues. Then max purples and golds. The most recent posts exclusively show perfect gold and green items.
