If you read through the TOS/EULA, scamming is definitely against 'the rules'. They might have been scamming, or they could just be jerks. Were you a recruiter that advertises help and items on the chat channel? There's always a little more to a situation than we know about. I do still think its rude to take advantage of others like that. With that said, I think there is a little more here to think about.
There is a lot to being a guild leader. If you get a sizable guild going you are going to get new people who will beg or want guild members to do everything for them. There will be guild members who don't get along. All I'm saying is you gotta be bit more saavy here.
A couple rules I follow when giving stuff away:
1. Can I piss this item or money away and not care?
2. Does the person need it, or just want something cooler?
3. How well do I know the person? So if it's a nice item will they return it if they don't need it?
I'm not saying don't give stuff away. In fact it would be a shame if this experience put you off from helping your guildies. Maybe give new members a 2 week trial period before they get free drok runs, crafting materials, etc. In that two weeks they can display their willingness to help the guild and you can see what, if anything, they have to offer. Good luck. ^.^
