Character and relation question

Hi i'm new to guild wars but not to online rpg's. I just have 2 quick questions.

1. I am a little confused about the two different types of characters you can create. I understand one is PVP only and the other is role-playing. Can you fight other players in the role playing game mode? What is the 20 lvl cap on PVP about? How does Guildwars expect to make money if it's free.

2. How does guild wars relate to other online rpg's I have played Lineage2 and i would like to know how it compares to other rpg's. Is there a team Based element. Like you make a guild and go Hunting for Items and battling other guilds.

Please excuse my ignorance if a topic has already been posted on these questions.

EDIT: Hmm i didn't notice the sticky thread for new players. If a moderator could please move it to that thread i would appreciate it.

a PVE can do both pve and pvp while a pvp is restricted to pvp areas only
you need to unlock skills and upgrades with a pve character

they will make money on selling the new optional content which is about twice a year and has the content equal in price and amount to the original game

edit on the level cap

from GW

Guild Wars, in contrast, is based around your skill as a player. Our maximum level is twenty and you hit that very quickly, after about 20-30 hours of play. ,We call that 'The Point of Ascension'. Almost all of the content in the game and in the future Chapters is only available to Ascended characters, which means we don't have to worry about providing different levels of content. All the good stuff will be available to everyone. It's not our intent to force people onto the levelling up treadmill, so the level cap in Guild Wars is almost meaningless.

PVP is limited to pvp areas only which cuts out ganking, pkers and people who like to mob a new person for fun
