Weird Graphics Error
keerf
Hi Folks,
I'm having what appears to be a nice graphics error. It first started happning when the wrote on the webpage that they were having server problems. My game was just glitching like crazy. My char would turn into a tree at certain points, or the landscape would melt into one almost. Then after they fixed that it worked ok.
I just a few days ago got a new CPU, a AMD64 3800+ Venice (currently have a DM64 3500+ winchester, but that is going to a family member). HAd to take out the venice though cause few quirks I still need to work out. In either case, now the game after certain amount of play (no real time estimate, hour or longer) My screen just goes completly red. I have to exit out and restart the game. Anyone else seeing weirdness like this? Might it be something with my computer perhaps?
Specs:
AMD64 3500+
DFI Lanparty UT nForce4 Ultra D
Corsair XMS Memory (1 gig)
BFG 6800GT OC
If anyone has any insight, or settings I might try. That would be great!

I have the same problem after so long of playing. Its only happened a couple of times since I bought the game, but if you keep playing, you'll see the game normally, then it goes red again.
I managed to fix the screen by just alt tabbing / minimizing (depending if your full or windowed mode) and reopening the screen. It fixed the problem and I was able to play normally again.
You can sometimes tell when its going to happen because the video slows down or starts to lag when you (for some reason) look in a certian direction or enter a certian area. Not sure why this is, but thats the solution I found that works so I didn't bother investigating any farther.
Hope it helps.

Yeah I am getting the same thing only my screen goes blue. Alt Tabbing sometimes helps but it isnt instant.
keerf
I'll have to give that a try .. I'm just happy its not me hahaha
Beastly Fido
Same deal here, goes all blue but after only 5 minutes or so, looking in the same place usually. A7n8x mobo, Athlon XP 2500+, nVidia 6600GT AGP from MSI.

Looks like it may be a problem with Nvidia video cards. Looking at what everyone else is running here. I have Nvidia card, 256MB PCI 16X card. I updated the drivers to the current version and I still have the same problem.
It may be that I need to adjust some advanced setting for the visuals.

Soul Monarch
My ATI had zero problems. (Not even texture mapping problems, which ATI is occasionally wont to have.)
Could be an nVidia thing, you're right.

I get the exact same problem as you get... we tried many thing with NCSoft support without any success along the last 2 beta events... for me, the screen go grey or red or blue, but reducing/maximazing always solve the problem.
My comp is :
AMD Athlon64 3000+
1Go DDR400
GeForce 6600GT
I'm not sure it's a nVidia problem. It's possible it's AMD related too... Can be a floating number issue... But I thought if it was an AMD problem, more people should have this problem... Anyway it's really annoying
I suggest you report it through support.

Looks to be that way then. GeForce here as well. It doesn't happen often enough to be a problem for me, if it does start to pick up in the days ahead, I'll have to go ahead and play around to find a solution.

I too have a 6600GT and have not seen this problem at all, and I played last night for 3+ hours. Also running a AMD 64 Winchester core on 311Mhz frontside bus. It might actually be related to an overheating issue with the video card itself, as I have seen this happen when the card gets to hot.
Serafita Kayin
Pharoke, you runnin 311? what's that multi?
EnDinG
Well, a lot of the recent cards made by Nvidia lately do have overheat issues. I'm running a side fan and a back fan on my computer. (My room is a dust collection, so I need to blow the dust out once every 1 1/2 weeks.) I've only played GW really with it so far, so I haven't had the chance to really burn this baby on something like D3 or T:V.
Serafita Kayin
I can tell you it's not overheat.
I have a nice fat waterblock on mine, 1/2 in tubing, 500GPH pump, all the goodies.
That ruled out, any other suggestions?

Hey Serafita, sorry about that my finger missed the wrong numbers totally. It is actually at 220 with multi of 10 (It's a 3000+, so not too bad). I was in the middle of my Microsoft Network Security class when I was typing, so I wasn't really paying much attention. You running a custom waterblock or an over the counter?
Weakling
Well, I have a 6600GT and I do have the problem. Sometimes it happens after playing for a couple of hours, sometimes only after half an hour. First the graphics get all jumbled, upside down, reverse, losing texture and then a few minutes later it goes completely red, well, brownish red actually. It seems to start after the game has loaded a new area. It hasn't happened up until now if I stay in the same area.

How many case fans you got? Also, what kind of cooling solution does the graphics card have for the memory? I ask because I know a lot of the 6600GT AGP versions don't have the heatsinks on the memory. I have the Chaintech AGP version and the heatsing wasn't even touching the memory, till I applied some thermal tape too them.
Serafita Kayin
Danger Den Acetal top, custom decked, custom holddown plate.
Ah, thought you were in the 300+ club with me, I run 9x300 for rendering and 8x325-340 for fun...
Have some pics of the rig too...
Sorry for the hijack all...

Nice!!! I am going to be doing some work to my system and upgrading the memory (that is the overclock bottleneck right now). Tested with some Corsair XMS memory and was able to achieve 300, but he wanted it back. What motherboard are you using? Also, Weakling I notice you are using 71.84 drivers, have you tried the 71.89's? Anyone using XP 64bit? I had the Alpha and while running 3 different bench marks at the same time it self destructed and would not boot back up....so back to XP Pro I went.
Pharoke
Damn it. A buddy just sent me an e-mail with a virus attached to it. Well off to scan my billion drives to see if I got it or not. Mcafee says not, but I have learned not to trust them.
Serafita Kayin
XP 64 isn't worth it.
Good call on the drivers, always run the WHQL for best game performance.
Chaintech VNF4-Ultra, let me link ya to my PhotoBucket for this, it's my baby...

Thanks, appreciate it.

Cooling isn't the issue for me here. I have 2 120side case fans blowing right over the card and cpu. The card itself is running at pretty nice temps. It might very well be an nvidia issue. Since I have a friend playing with an ATI and he has no graphics issues.

What is everyone using connection wise(ie cable, dsl, dialup, shared wireless broadband router)? I ask cause I was over at my sister's house last night and I was using my brother-in-laws' laptop with the mobile 6800GT and I encountered this error while using his wireless setup, but when I switched to his desktop which is hard wired to the network, bang no problems!!!
Beqxter
I'm also seeing this problem with a Leadtek 6600gt, latest nVidia drivers. I don't think it's overheating b/c the max temp I'm seeing is 70, which doesn't strike me as error territory. Otherwise I'm using an A64 3200 and a wired connection to DSL. Today I noticed I started getting buggy vid about 15-20 minutes before it crapped out on me (streaks, missing panels, etc). But when mine dies, I have to restart the computer to get everything working again - alt-tabbing to the desktop puts me a bizarre resolution with only 16 colors, and I can't get out of it.
Haven't heard of anyone with an ATI or even a non-6600 or 6800gt card having this problem, so it seems to be an nVidia bug? Anyone manage to fix it yet?

As stated earlier I have the 6600GT and do not have any problems at all, which is making me shake my head. Who has AGP and who has PCI-E (Express). Also, what location are you connecting from? I am in Washington State, USA and I am at a complete loss. Service packs installed, different mem configurations, what could it be..
Beqxter
Sorry, should have said. I'm using AGP, and am connecting from Northern California.
Weakling
XP SP2, 6600GT AGP, 71.84, ADSL 3200/768 kbps, The Netherlands. Maybe it's driver related?
Warlokk
Same issue here, Athlon64 3000+, GeForce 6600GT PCI-E, 1gb RAM, running on 4 mbit cable... every now and then, the graphics get all stuttery, bits and pieces will either disappear or start flying around, then the screen goes all blue, usually with a red square someplace. If I'm really lucky I can minimize and get back in and it's OK, but many times it just stays like that, and Windows gets stuck in 800x600x4 color mode, and only a reboot will fix it. It's almost gotta be an Nvidia driver issue, although I'm running the newest version currently on Nvidia's website (71.89).
Pharoke
I'm not sure what settings do you hav e turned on in bios concerning video. We really needto track this down. Like I said I have only hasd the problem on my brother in laws laptop, not my home rig. Played for 6+ hours yesterday.
EnDinG
That is one pretty nice mod'd case / setup. Also one of the largest damn rigs I've seen in a long time. I was mod'ing my old puter before giving it to the girlfriend, so it was only maybe half way done.
The new one I bought last month I'll be working on soon. More of a fan of the blue / green setup light wise. Need to find some decent paints / side panel covers.
Once I get it going, I'll take some shots for you to gander at.

Has anyone tried doing a tracert to arenanets servers to see if thngs are getting dropped. I would do it, but I am at school right now. Will try when I get home. Ok, I did some research and Arenanet is located in Seattle, Washington. Don't know if the game server for US is being hosted there, but if it is it only puts me 45 miles from the server. It is actually beginning to sound like dropped packets of information more than a graphics card issue.

Just a me too, me too post.
Got the red screen o' death, fixable by min then maxing GW (first and only time so far).
And yup....Geforce 6800 here. Not overclocked. Temps on my computer including my video card stay very cool (cant afford to upgrade every few months, so I made a good investment in cooling to maximize the life on my components).
I am betting this is an Nvidia issue with GW. Hopefully adressed soon.
Hey...atleast you can fix it by min/maxing the GW window. Could be worse...could have to cold boot every time.

Some of us DO have to cold boot every time. min/maxing doesn't work for me and a couple others.
Warlokk
Yup, I usually do... after GW freaks out, my system gets stuck in 800x600x4 colors. Only way to get back to normal is reboot. And I play at the same res as my desktop, 1280x1024x32.
Pharoke
I am really beginning to think this is something other than an Nvidia issue as I have also read of people with ATI cards having issues also. Has anyone played with bios settings related to graphics? Try turning off Fast Writes for AGP (don't know about PCIx).
Childeric Kaldor
Don't think it's related to FastWrite... but still here...
Principa Discordia
In case it helps I'm running a Chaintech Geforce 6600GT 128mB AGP in 8x AGP mode with fast writes enabled and I'm not getting any problems at all.
Beqxter
I'd be curious to know if ANYONE is still having this problem since they did the latest updates. I haven't seen it since.
