Server Speed Feedback Needed

Disabling the Who's Online Now would help a lot of database issues as that adds a LOT of strain.

It timed out 3 times just trying to post this reply. I have not noticed any change in the server speed. Has always been very slow. Except for early early morning hours I suppose.

To further elaborate on this, I will try to explain as best I can.
With the Who's Online Now, for every user that is in that list, one database query per user is sent. So when 700 members are online, there are 700 queries to the MySQL/etc. database simply to list this information. On top of that, as it gathers this information to render on the forum index it also has to get the user identification number, what group that member belongs to so it can render the html for the other groups that have colors or italics/underline/bold in their name group. All of this takes up resources and CPU.
I do know that Invision Boards offer methods for CPU Saving & Optimization with features to disable these sort of items and much more to reduce the strain on popular forums. I have a good idea that vBulletin would have similar features.

Not too bad recently. Edit post even works without too much bother.

I've never experienced a quicker response then let's say 15 seconds per click.
That's preventing me from being active on this forum except when i can't play gw due to error 13 messages. It's 0:05 CET (GMT +1) when I press the post button.

3PM GMT onwards...SLOW! multiple time outs, 'edit page' seems to be the cause most of the time
I pwnd U
12:34 pm CST. Extremely slow, Can't seem to get into any thread, timing out almost everytime i try to open a thread.
The Ernada
Around 6 PM pacific time, I've been getting a lot of timeouts and sluggishness. Sorry but will this site's slow loading problems ever be corrected?
Ruby Lightheart
It is currenty 12:30pm est..middle of the day and i am getting massive time outs and sluggishness. I cannot even access the action pages becaues they are sooo slow.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Currently it is 4:00 PM (PST) on Saturday March 17. The site is very sluggish, often timing out forcing me to backtrack and try reloading the page again, refresh sometimes works, but still takes quite long.
This behavior has been happening it seems for the last few weeks now. I have been monitoring the site speed at random times and it does get slightly faster during late nights (USA timezones). All other times it is very trying to navigate GwG. Perhaps Guru has outgrown its servers again?
Anywhoo, just a heads up!
Cheers.

The site is holding up well under the load today, all things considered. Too bad it isn't this speedy at other times.

I hate to say this, but, I'm having an impossible time accessing anything on the auction site and now it's spilled over into the forums. I usually get a blank page when I try to access anything. It has taken me several tries just to be able to post this message. I'm in the EST and I have a 5 gig cable modem connection. My computer has an AMD X2 dual core chip with 2 gigs of ram and the latest high end Nvidia based video card (all the better to see GW with, my dear). I should be able to fly from page to page with the greatest of ease.
In the words of James Brown: "Please, please, please,..." fix this. I come here every day because I'm a GW addict.
I've noticed that there is hardly any bidding any more on the auction site and most of my trades have been with international buyers and sellers. If I'm looking for something specific, I need a lot of patience because I may have to click on a page 3 or 4 times just to get to it. My friends have had their bids timed out and have not been able to bid on items. They generally give up.

Site's slow today. Every page loads slowly, I've had a few timeouts while trying to load pages, and had a couple posts just not want to post. I don't understand why it's so different today, when it wasn't like this yesterday.

It's nice to have some good news for once - the site has been behaving much better since the clocks went forwards - it can be slow, but database errors aren't nearly as common and posting messages doesnt usually result in gnashing of teeth. Edit button's still very slow though. (at least it can be.)
Not A Fifty Five
The forum posting is alright, the edit button is slow but rarely times out (I just copy/paste the edit if it timed out). But the auction site itself, oi, I'd never bother going there to buy.

Some times it times out, sometimes it goes well, tottaly randome for me and really frustrating.

I get ping spike from 200MS to 300MS with a team of ppl not NPC's.
Doctor Norris
Just curious why this website is always so laggy. I mean besides the obvious reason of a lot of people. Are you guys on a dedicated box or a shared? It takes me forever to get around sometimes because the load times are horrible.
Do members that subscribe get access to faster speeds or something because I would definately join up now if that was case.
Thanks

This thread is about forum speed, not the game.

I don't know if it's been suggested before but if you turn off the logged on users display it should give a small speed boost. It has to access the database constantly to update the list of people online and it seems like it probably does have an impact on speed considering that usually 2,000+ are logged on during the daytime. :O
I think SomethingAwful had to do something similar because they usually have about anywhere from 4,000-7,000 users on at one time.
(They made this feature to see other that are online a paid feature to pay for the bandwidth it took up.)
Edit:
Do you perform weekly database optimization/defrag? If you continuously optimize the tables in the database for the forums every week it should give a good performance boost by keeping the size of the database down. I've had experiences with mySQL where even small databases are shrunk by as much as 30-40%.
Also, what type of mySQL (or whichever type) database are you running? Some are more effective at handling large databases such as GWG's.

Nope, we get no extra privileges besides cosmetic ones (sig, extra PM space, Guru e-mail)
Exterminate all
Sometimes it take along time to load the page and sometimes it doesn't idk why.... EST time zone
Arrow Whisper
EST here as well. Most of the time it takes anywhere from 15-30 seconds to load the page. Rarely I'll click on it and it'll go right through.
There is a significant slowdown that needs to be addressed.

Been having some serious issues loading pages in the last few days from Sydney at pretty much any time from morning to night (30 seconds or longer to load many/most pages, with the occasional time out or 'server not found' error), and I was wondering: if I was to go the "pay a fee, get rid of ads" route, would this improve at all?
I think it's a really great site, and I'd love to support it AND get a performance boost, but if it's the same servers for subs and non-subs, then I couldn't justify it.
Cheers,
-B.

I am having the same problem. Before the new update the site was laggy but managable. Since the update the site is a total nightmare. Either it is on a shared dedi which isnt ideal or the database needs streamlining.
Its a shame because it is a very good site when it works but at the moment there isnt any point it being here if it is so unusable.

The board works fine for me b4 830 am est.I After 830 the forums become painstakingly slow, sometimes I have to wait at least 30 seconds for a page to load, most of the time I cant get a page to load, especially around noon my time.
Like someone above said, if you turn off the visited users on the forum you will see a performance increase. Not sure what good use it has anyways, when I click on my name to find my last post, I get a "you do not have authoriziation to view this page" message. If its for admin use only, I believe there is a switch you can use to turn the list off for "regular" users & leave it on for moderators & admins (I know theres a switch for phpbb forums to turn it off & those are free boards VB being paid for youd think for sure it would have that switch).

This forum was (is) SLOW as hell in the last weeks, too much for me, I stopped to use it at all! Sorry, this was my favorite GW forum, but I can't wait ages for pages loadings. Forum owner(s) must think in a creative way to make more money here and upgrade to a faster and bigger server/connection.
Redeem Gamma
i've been trying to use the new auctions but it takes way too long for pages to load, they often time out too, somthing realy needs to be done about it, i'm sure i'm not the only one getting this
Urgval
I've gave up with Auctions. It takes ages to load anything there. Same goes for Guru main page and forums. Its just way too slow. Guru is the slowest loading site ive ever met on internet...seriously...

Thanks you guys noted. I'm curious to hear from any euro visitors after a discussion I had in IRC the other day. I have a ping of around 59 to guildwarsguru.com but I'm hearing our euro friends are over 400 constantly? If anyone who is euro can comment or give me some feedback on that it would be much appreciated.
Doofledust
UK here with av. ping of 194ms
Snype
I'm having HUGE loading times, usually at least a 40 seconds per page. Most of the time I have to try twice on a link (it gives me an error the first time). I'm on EST in the US.
Kas
The ping in itself is rather normal and hovering around ~200-300ms which is quite okay for a forum. The real problem is loading the pages which takes basically forever. Sort of like we get 0.1 kb/s bandwith for downloading the pages.
So, ping is allright but bandwith looks pretty limited.

Well it's 16h40 in CET right now (GMT+2, Netherlands, summer time.) I'd given up on the forums already because it is still sloooooooooooooow.
However, at least the page did load. Before it would just time out. There are about 2696 users on.

Tannim
30 seconds to 3 minutes to load any page. This happens 24/7 from Alaska (here), Texas (my dedicated server) and Indiana (family).
Might need to buckle down and get a more powerful server, or spread the database/website between servers, or more bandwidth

So....is anything being done? I don't see the point of this thread if nothing is going to be done.

I always have insane loading times on guru, sometimes the pages don't load at all! Guru is so slow for me, it's driving me crazy...

Has been incredibly sluggish for nearly a week for me now. Load times go from 10 seconds per link, up to 30 seconds at the worst. Ok load times @ night for me, but only maybe 25% faster. I am PST time if that is relavent.
Makes basic browsing incredibly time consuming, not friendly to the guest user because of this either.
anyway, tahts my situation atm. cheers.
