Lodestones.
But for materials, it really depends on your class.

i can get way more on any of those from trading then i can from the merchant, so sell em all to me

Lodestones are not crafting material... Granite slabs are.

Depends...I have found wood planks to be pretty useless.
Badenstein
Wood Planks become charcoal, which is needed for steel.
The best thing to do is get the crafting requirements for the armor and then see which items are not needed by your primary class.

Well, by the time you can get any decent armor, the mobs drop tons of crafting material. Save enough to get the best armor you can in Ascalon, then slang the rest. What I do is, I try to keep around 10 or so of each material and I sell the rest.

Also, a lot of useless material like the "eyes" or carapices are later sold to collectors in the Wild.

Until I find some use (quest?) for them, I vote tapestry shred and Hunter's Ale as the two most useless items so far.
Julius Gaius
don't forget the post-searing broken flute!

wood planks are used for parchment. necros and monks need parchment for their scar and tatoo armors.

Wood, Cloth and Tanned squares or whatever are the most items I have after I salvage stuff.

Use the armor guide on this site to see what kind of materials you want to keep for your class. Keep all of your rare crafting items (silk, steel, linen, fur, etc) and sell them to other players unless you need them for your own armor.
As for common materials, cloth is still in pretty high demand so you could probably make more money holding onto it and selling to players rather than selling to a merchant. There's a good market out there for cloth trading or buying. Sell the rest of the common materials you won't need as well as craftable items that turn into materials you won't need.
The key here is gold. Gold can buy you anything you need and all those items in your inventory are costing you money by not allowing you to pick up more and more items to sell. You can buy all the materials you'll need to craft your armor so theoretically, you could sell everything and just buy stuff when you're ready to craft.

meh the value of cloth is low, 10 for 111 gold, compared to ingots, 6 for 300..
Pandora's box
I'm still on the Ascalon map (post-searing) and its hard to make a choice out of all the useless crap dropped there. What strikes me is that its almost (low level) mage stuff like cestas, wands and icons. No good weapons, no good shields or armor. Yes its possible to salvage them, but after a week of playing I think crafting is... well fake! All items are pre-devined. Crafting is fun if its done by the player, to create something completely new. Gathering some basic stuff and let a shopkeeper make something without even rolling a dice is no fun. I cant say whats the worst item. I only can say there's no good item... so far.
