Using newly-unlocked items on existing PvP char?

When you've unlocked a new item or upgrade (whether through finding it in PvE or using faction from PvP), is there a way to get that item for use with an existing PvP character?

Or do I need to delete the character and recreate it in order to use the new item? If so, that seems rather lame....

You can automatically use it, to the OP

for spells, they should be available right away assuming what you unlocked fits one of your pvp's classes. For runes and weapon upgrades you'll need to remake the character.

Am I the only one that thinks it's retarded to remake a character entirely to use a new weapon or something. Granted it doesn't take much time, but it still does. And every time, I always end up forgetting something......
Would be nice to have something to fix your weapon or runes or something without remaking.
