What is the actual worth of armor? How much does it actually help?

I saw a ranger running around without any on because he said it didn't do anything. This was something I had gotten a feeling for too. How much does this armor help? Does anyone have any data that might support claimns that it doesn't help at all?

armor is VERY important.

think of it this way, once i had armor at 50 and took 20 dammage from something, got it to 75, and only took 4 dammge

The armour calculation is [Defensive Adjustment] = 2^((60 - [Armor Level]) / 40)

Increasing your armour by 40 points halves the damage you take.
