They look like the trolls from lord of the rings to me. They're overall look is very troll-like but they're also giant-like. They may not be classified as either so they might be weak to earth or fire damage?

based on models i would *guess* they're giants; trolls seems to be more... slim than giants in this game. But thats just a guess.

I would be greatly surprised if Ettin's in GW are classed as Trolls, as with what Dogman said.. in most myth's and games and such that include Ettin's, they are always referred to as "Giants" or "Two-Headed Giants" or similar.. and not Trolls.
Although I have to agree with strif3 that the Ettin's in GW do have a remarkable resemblance to the Trolls in LoTR *shrugs*.

You know. I was told over, and over, and over, and over, and over that the first rule of ettin farming is: Don't talk about farming ettins. All i was doing was helping someone out with how to solo farm the ettins and like 10 people pounced on me.

From a racial standpoint Ettins ARE gaints..Ettin is just a fancy way to say Gaint.
As for mods working or not - without having a gaintslaying mod to work with I would probably bet 1 plat that gaintslaying works on them.
If not for Ettins..what is gaintslaying for..their the only gaints I know of in the game...

They do however knockdown later in the game.

LOL what a coincidence, this is exactly the question i was going to post here. the answer was always different with the different people i asked so i just decided to buy a 20% gaintslaying pommel and im going to test this out myself but first i need to find another sword to upgrade with this mod :/
i was thinking the only way to test this out would be to use two swords both with the same dmg range and dmg mod but upgrade one with the slaying pommel. Then take a record of the highest damage achieved by each sword on ettins of the same level. This could still be inaccurate though because of critical hits etc. so if any1 can come up with a better test i'd be willing to give it a try

Strif those 10 people that jumped you about it were right!!!
But that aside they take alot of extra damage from fire. Would like to hear how the giantslaying pommel works out for you but you should definatly go with the fiery hilt.
To whom it may concern Ettins have been nerfed and never drop anything but hardened humps.

The best that I have found was a Fiery Sword Hilt, FIRE does the most damage. And if the slaying pommel works.......Goodbye Ettins

Ok instead of highest dmg, do average damage- that way you get more acurate.

I finally got the chance to do some real testing.
Using Wild Blow and two different swords, I tested vs the ettins.
Note the 42 damage in both shots.
I was using a stance to optimize the stance based sword.
Note that elemental damage is ideal, as a pure physical Wild Blow was 30 damage.
So, it was an expensive experiment, but at least it's known now.
