pet + smite build
tuperwho
I'm Working on a PVE ranger, and liking the idea of a pet. Here's what I'm thinking of. Anyone tried this, or have suggestions?
charm animal
call of protection - reduce damage animal takes
feral lunge - pet attack + damage + bleeding
predator's pounce - pet attack + damage + pet heal
retribution - for pet
judges insight - for pet
strength of honor - for pet
shield of judgement - for pet
I also considered mark of protection, but think tha's spreading attributes too thin.
I'm thinking along the lines of:
beast mastery: 9 + 3 = 12
smiting: 12
expertise: 9 + 1 +1 = 11 -- this is to help with energy, as I'll have minus 2 arrows of energy regen.
Unfortunately, this leaves me doing little damage, but that's the sacrifice for the build.
And yes, I searched, but didn't find anything since the AoE update this week. Speaking of which, might an AoE smite be a good thing? It would take the heat off my pet in this situation. I'm just worried about the problems keeping aggro, though.

How are you going to get engergy back? When you hit zero, you build will be squat .
If you do get some energy management in there though, it will be a good farming build for a pet. heheheheh.
Nice creative thinking by the way.

Part of the point of my posting was to see if the energy would indeed make this impossible. However, in theory: Rangers have energy regen of 3 arrows. Thus, while I'll have 2 enchantments to upkeep, i'd still have 1 arrow of regen (not much, but something). The high expertise would reduce casting costs by 55% (by some guide I read on this site). So the plan would be to get the enchants up, and let them do most of the work, using the low energy pet attack skills when possible.
But like I said, that's why I'm seeking the advice and criticism of anyone out there who might have tried this, or would have insight for another reason.
P.S. I never understood the posting rules. If I'm not allowed to post this close to my last one, I'm sorry. Someone just let me know better, and I'll stop.

oh... nevermind.
For a second there i thought it said 3 arrows of degeneration on the build.
But still 1 arrow of energy regeneration.... shiznit.

Ooh just to let you know, expertise only effects "skills" (ie attacks skills, preps and the like) and not spells (ie. no monk skills other than Contemplation of Purity). Thus you will definately have energy management issues once you need to recast the JI and the other monk ench.
You have missed the beastmaster's BEST skill ever which solves all your energy problems and also gives good spammable attacks which is ..... (drum roll) Ferocious Strike {Elite} !!!!! - "Your animal companion attempts a Ferocious Strike that deals +13-25 damage. If that attack hits, you gain 3-9 energy"
You will have to leave out SoJ ofcourse but IMO its worth it
Due to this single skill, I used to the Balth Aura + Judges Insight combo with no problems unless my pet died (a +15energy staff helps). Ofcourse this was before the update and now AoE will only scare of the monsters.

Thanks for the pointers, M3lk0r. I had been a little leery about shield of Judgement, anyway, because of the energy cost and need to recast. So ferocious strike it is.

As a comment - if you want a pet that can survive well and you want to get a ton of energy back you can opt for Symbiosis and use Balthazar's Spirit on yourself. You'll want to pack a good self-heal though, since you are taking a pounding through that bond. Symbiosis is much cheaper than life bond and can't be stripped with an enchanment removal, but doesn't reduce the damage being transferred.

Does Symbiotic Bond stack with Life Bond, and how would that work?

Wow, epi... would have never thought of that. I'll have to give it a try once I get some more skills and levels (attribute points). This must be why I've been hanging on to Flint's Fleshcleaver -- 15 energy and 30 life will do well for this build. Thanks a lot.

Your original build will run into HUGE energy problem in like 15s.
I've tried Strength of Honor and Judge's Insight. My feeling is that Strength of Honor is a better choice of the two and is less annoying because you don't need to cast it again and again.
If the idea is to rely solely on your pet, then you should bring Call of Haste to speed everything up.
Personally, I would go like this in PvE:
Call of Haste
Ferocious Strike
Predator's Pounce
Strength of Honor
Comfort
Charm
Rez Sig
The last one can be anything. The good thing about Strength of Honor is that you can cast it on another player or even on 3 players. That leaves you with no energy regen but that's what Ferocious Strike is there for.
Retribution is a neat idea except your pet doesn't get target that often...not as often as you would like, trust me.
Balth Aura can deal a lot of damage but it costs so much energy too.

Ive been doing this in pvp.. seems to work well.. Ive increased my base damage enough to where I feel im just as effective as my pet and my pet is just as effective as I would be if I where using a mess of shots..
