Don’t feel stupid, and don’t feel like you have a bad guild because you lost a couple of GvGs. All guilds, even the uber-top-ladder guilds had to start somewhere.
Get to know your hall. Inside and out. Find the fastest way to the flag stand, where the environmental features are (gates that open/close, lock/unlock, ice, quicksand, teleporters, ballistae). All halls have their unique features to make the battle interesting.
While you’re at it, go back to Lion’s Arch, to the ferryman at the docks where you went to choose an island. Take some key guildies, or all of them, on a tour of ALL the islands.
Find a friendly guild to do unranked battles with—and if you can convince them not to fight until an agreed-upon time after the timer starts, all the better. That’ll give you time to get situated, because you will suddenly have all these NPCs around, guild lord, sometimes thief, bodyguards, etc. We did this with a friendly guild, except that both guilds were on TS together, and it worked out well to talk them through what happens.
EDIT: Thought I would point out, just in case, that the object of the GvG, is to kill the other team's guild lord. In order to be successful, depending on timing, you may have to kill the other team’s players several times (while they resurrect automatically) before you make it to the guild lord. I won’t lie, it’s tough, especially against organized teams.
