Same thing happened to me last night with silver dye. I was trying to dye my pre-order Kanthan Targe (at least that's how it's spelled on the GW website, I swear it's spelled different in-game)...still shows red on my character, but shows silver in the inventory. I figured you just weren't able to dye the preorder items, but I haven't tried it yet (since GW went retail...seemed to work fine during beta) with any other items. I was going to submit a bug report, but have not done so yet.

I highly doubt that this was actually some form of bug.. To be blunt: Actually, yes it did.

My druid's armor is dyed orange. Druid's armor, however, has very little area that actually dyes.

Masks dye completely.
Leggings ONLY dye the ties around the bamboo peices.
Pants are dyed completely.
Torso ONLY dyes two small stripes on the arm and a few small peices of cloth holding the bamboo on, again.
Gloves dye ONLY the cloth, the bamboo peices stay the same.

Sorry for the reused item pic, but I didnt feel like taking a new one.

You should be more worried about how bad you got ripped off...1,600 on a black dye? Thats ridiculous....

Hmmm. So even though the small icon of my shield in the inventory slot shows it is dyed completely silver, that icon is in no way representative of the color of shield I actually carry into battle...

I'll buy that. But I think the little inventory icon is quite misleading, then. Oh well, not like it's going to make me quit playing the game. Kind of a bummer, though, since I eventually wanted to dye everything solid black, shield included.

I'll post a pic next time I log in.

I wouldn't pay 1600gp for any dye, either...

I don't believe dye works on the pre-order items. I wasted some blue on my shield. Yes, it's blue in inventory look up...and yes, it's red on my actual toon.

If you remove the dye, what color would the item be?

It dosent matter, you dont need to. If you dye over a previously dyed item, the item just changes colors

I wasted a silver dye. It's hosed. I think it's bugged. On the inventory screen it shows the entire shield as silver, on the paper doll it shows only the symbol on it silver, and on-screen NOTHING is silver. It didn't so ANYTHING. It's super lame.

Thanks for the informative reply, ass.

I've read the entire thread. Nothing on my shield appears to be silver. I've showed with my screenshot that I have 3 DIFFERENT representations of what the shield looks like. My vote goes to "it's broken". The shield or it's markings should have dyed silver. Wasting dye for NO results is not how it should work. I bug reported it because I think it's broken. Hopefully someone will benefit from my mistake by seeing my post.

EDIT:
I don't know if it's the lighting or if they made a change, but now the markings on my shield look silver. I still wish the entire thing would be silver. They need to implement a method to see what it will look like BEFORE the dye is consumed, like EQ did years ago.

Your logic is flawless, I of course was being an ass, not trying to be helpfull by showing you what the awnser was. My first post wasnt informative in any way. [/being an ass]

As was stated before: It works. It may not work the way YOU want it to work, but it works. Request it to be a different way, dont /bug it and overload Anet further.

My final advice'd be to post about it in the suggestion forum. Gallie and crew will most likely see it.

its official - it works. i was wandering through LA today to check for you guys about silver and black dyes, and plenty of people were skulking in the shadows or reflecting prettily. It very much depends on your armour, how much silver/black you get covered with. However, it aint a bug - shields and swords generally have v. little space to dye.

you can also make shades of dyes you know....like black is usually purple, gotta layer it on couple times to turn real black

Me and my GF have both said on numerous occasions, that there should be two types of dye availble. Primary and Secondary.

Primary should dye everything on the armour to a shade of whatever colour the dye is.
Secondary dye should dye the trimmings etc.

What I'd do is use a cheap dye, to "test" the armour and see the dye-able areas, and then if you like, use the expensive.

I deffinetly agree with this. There are too many suits out there with small dye spaces. Gladiator armor for warriors is what annoys me. I want to dye the whole thing black but at best I can dye only a few spots.

I DON'T think it works. I have 3 DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIONS of what my shield should look like in one screenshot. WTF? It needs to be like EQ and show what the outcome will be before the dye is used. That would fix the problem.

I liked how NWN used the dye system. Maybe they could do something like that for the game.

I checked recently, and that is just standard dye-trader price, and therefore, a complete rip-off

Black dye seems rare, but my mezmer got 2 of them in pre, I dyed her armor in post. What I have noticed with armors is that the entire armor isn't dyed, there are dyable part. For example, your druid leggins. I noticed on mine that it was a small part, almost unnoticable. However, teh chest piece dyed just fine.

Black dyes costs between 1600 and 1765 gp, depending on how many that has bought them the latest 24 hours. You buy them at Dye Traders for this price, if you happen to find a black dye sold by a player then perhaps it can be cheaper, but not much less.

I've used black dyes on some part of my equipment and it has worked just fine.

To those who think 1600 + is much to buy stuff for, why is it so? You don't have to buy much else than that. In other games you have to buy runes frequently to be able to level, but GWO is not like that. You update your items with crafting and dyes to get the equipment you want. Black dyes are rare, so why can't they cost 1600?

Perhaps they should add an item 'Dye extracter'. Its something similar to dye remover, except, this time, you get to undo the dye you dyed on your armor. Say you dyed it silver, didnt like how it was, use the extracter to get back your silver dye. Hows it sound?

If you sell black dye to a dye trader, it sells for over 1300g so to pay a little more than that isnt so bad if you really want it...

Monks, Eles, Mesmers are the only ones you should bother dying armor with. Ranger + Warriors have little place that the dye takes effect. Last week black dye was going for 650, I bought 3 for some guild members, saved myself 3K
