Guild Wars on Laptops
Ristaron
I'm looking into getting a laptop and I was wondering what models current GW players use (and how they work).
I know I probably want a Toshiba laptop, better price for better performance. I have some good system specs, but I'm still curious as to what other people use.

I've got a compaq presario 2199 that it runs pretty well on.. Toshiba, I'd be clueless about

I used to play guild wars on an abs laptop with a p4 3.0 ghz radeon 9600 and 512 mb of ram. It ran it pretty good, but I just built my own desktop and it runs it much better. Just make sure the video card ram is dedicated.

I have a Toshiba A75-S213, advertised by Best Buy as a college laptop, with a 3.3 ghz P4 M, Radeon 9000 Mobile, 1gb RAM, 100GB HD, etc.(it's also on a wireless network). GW runs fine, the only thing I would and am considering is upping the RAM to 1.5 GB as the system leaves somewhere around 650k for actual game usage after system resources.

I use a Dell 610M with a x300 64mb vid card and it seems to work pretty well.

Actually let me change my previous post. I will probably get the Sager or an ASUS will similar specs. It is just so hard to make a decision sometimes.

eeew 2 GHz.
3 min is what I'm going for (anything above isn't worth it).
2 GB of RAM is amazing though.. but 512 will do...

A 2GHz Mobile Processor is equal to about a 3.2GHz desktop P4 processor!
I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 with 1GB RAM, 60GB 7200 RPM hard drive, GeForce 6800 Go video, 17" widescreen (1920x1200) AND play GW at 1920x1200 with 2x Anti-aliasing at 30+ fps.
It cost me just over $1600.

Not only that, but L2 cache is different than clock speed...performance depends on a lot of stuff.

This will change soon, as intel is integrating a mix of the superior mobile CPU architecture and the high clocking of the current desktop line into its next desktop CPUs.

NGMA is only the proto type name, we will probably see some new naming for that CPU. Pentium 5 or something ...

Runs like a fatman at a marathon, so I'm getting a desktop. I advise you to do the same unless you have to get the lappy.

I have a Toshiba laptop.. can't remember the model number but will post it later when I get home. It's got a x600 card in it..'256mb' video memory but it's actually 128mb with the ability to use another 128mb of system memory.
Willy Rockwell
I play on a Dell Latitude, but it is configured to run Avid broadcast editing software, so GW presents no problem.

I bought a Compaq Presario x6000 it has a PCI express 256MB ATI card. And it has a P4 3Ghz processor. It has a slow 40GB HD and it came with 256MB of ram (Ram upgrade on wesite was WAY too expensive) Anyways GW ran on this but it would take FOREVER to load a zone. I put 2GB of ram in it and it is fast as can be now. I woldnt worry too much about the processor. I would focus on Ram capability (how much you can put in it so you can upgrade later) and Dedicated Video Card. My PC at home is 2Ghz and GW doesnt run any differently.
A friend of mine runs GW on a much less powerful laptop without any problems, it ran better than mine before I upgraded the ram, it was embarassing
I paid $1,300 for the laptop. Then I cant remember what I paid for RAM I just remember I got a good deal on the RAM.
Hope this helps

The new Centrino chips are quite powerful for their clock speeds and I stand by the 2GHz Centrino being as fast as a 3.2GHz desktop system. When plugged, these Centrino chips are FAST. Again, it looks like you subscribe to the GHz is everything theory.
Pharoke
Centrino 2Ghz is equivelant to a 3.2P4 and they are not underclocked while on AC, and there is a way to turn off the underclocking while on battery if you desire. And of course they aren't clocked as high as the P4's. Why clock something that high when you can get better performace at a lower clock speed. Oh, and here is some light reading for you all at my other home Notebookforums.com: http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...light=centrino

mrchu, in regards to the performance issues...have you updated to the new mobile drivers? I have read that these are causing some issues.

Might I suggest you check out www.notebookforums.com and read up on the different brands and models. If you want something with the performance of a new DELL M170 you can also look at the Sager 5720 (with the new go 7800GTX) as the Sager is much cheaper and if you buy from PCTorque get extended warranty for about 100.00 for 2 more years through PCT.

I use the HP Pavilion zv6270us Notebook, and it works well...altough every once in a while it lags...but the preformace is good, and it just depends on the speed of your internet connection.

Guys, no I'm not on the "GHz is everything" theory.
I'd like to point out that no laptop I know of can run SLI Ge-force 7's.
ALthough that was a bit extreme of an example, graphics cards ARE a huge advantage to desktops.

I used to usse my dell latitude c800 for guildwars;
it had a 64 mb video card (nvidia)
512 mb ram
1.6 ghz p4
It worked perfectly until for some reason whenever the fans turned on I got massive lag.. (think it might have to ddue with the fact that I use it in reduced power mode cause I have a 70 watt adapter not a 90)

I use an Asus V6V to play GW on. 1.86ghz sonoma, 2gb ddr2 ram, 60gb 7200rpm hd, ati x600. Plays smoothly with all options on @ 1400x1050.
And a 2ghz sonoma will completely destroy a 3.2ghz p4. The 2.2ghz sonomas were outperforming 3.8ghz p4s and the 64-bit amds in games.

Guild Wars in wide screen is sweet. My friend has the Dell 24" widescreen for his PC....it is jaw dropping beautiful!
