It's time for another Guild Wars contest! And with the Design-a-Weapon Contest, you have a chance to be immortalized forever in the second chapter of the Guild Wars story. We will be offering many new weapons and shields in the upcoming installment, and we'd love to include items based on your concepts. To enter the contest, simply send us a drawing, sketch, or printed image of a weapon or shield that you have designed. The next release of Guild Wars will feature new weapon types, but for now you should design around the traditional Guild Wars items:You need not keep your weapon or shield concepts within the boundaries of the Tyria that we know so well. In the coming chapter, there will be new professions and new regions that have not yet been explored. Feel free to engage in an artistic flight of fancy and to include art influences from around the globe in your weapon or shield design! |

While sketches won't look as good as something done in say a "3-D" image editor, I still rely on my artistic capabilities alot. I'll whip up a nice sketch, even if 3-d's put it to shame, I still feel paper artistics require a bit more talent then x's or y's, lines, and other stuff like inverting. ^_^
One bad thing though: I quote this from the website: "# We are unable to accept electronic entries for this contest."
Cool idea, a way to involve the fan base.

Sending a letter isn't the hardest thing in the world and Anet are probably just trying to get a few players to leave the house for some fresh air to post it entries.

This is going to be FUN~~

This looks interesting.

Pretty lame prize though, imo. I was going to enter, but doing the job of their artists and not even getting a free copy of chapter 2 for the winners? Pfft. Two thumbs down to this contest.

Actually, having you art in the game, and having it aknowledged by Arenanet publicly is quite a good prize, especially if you want a career in the industry as an artist.

You have to be kiding Josh. It would take me at least 15 minutes to walk there are back.
Looks like i'm out of luck anyway. My printer has died on me. Something tells me i shouldn't have been sticking pins into the cartridge nozzles.
EDIT - The page says a drawing or sketch but then it says "printed" on paper. Can we send the original drawing?
I really don't want to buy a new cartridge for a compettition that i won't win, lol.
Anyone know?

Sigh... the "no electronic entry" keeps me out of the contest. Laugh at me, but i simply can't pay the absurd amounts for sending a letter to the UK. And top that with a malfunctioning printer.
Sigh. I feel discriminated -.-

I have emailed Anet to ask if original drawings are able to be submitted. Sending stuff is no problem, using the word "print" on the GW page which applies to both drawing in an artistic sense and using a printer...is a problem.
Clarification please Anet.

I wonder if they allow entries inspired by weapons you have seen in other games/movies. Not directly ripping them off, but using the concept.

The ANET employee is doing it because he has to, to get paid plus he makes stuff that goes in games everyday.
The fan does it because of a love of guildwars and wanting to create something used in a game which most fans don't get to do ever.

Definitely going to be all over this. I do wish we got a copy of Chapt. 2 though.

If I do send anything in, I will make sure that I try each of the weapon types. Expands my chances from 0.000001% of winning to 0.000002%. lol, but its fun in itself.

I thought u can only submit one weapon/shield.
Meric Hellhammer
no u can submit one weapon/shield from each category. So for example u can only send 1 axe
ange1
if only they give free chap2 to winners, then i might pick up a pencil =D
Rancour
Just drew my entry. Heh, a hobby of mine is drawing weapons in MS Paint (do NOT underestimate this program, it rocks) so this contest is my kind of thing. Not that I'm sure of winning, but it'd be so cool to have something in-game that I designed.
If anything, the staff will atleast see what we can come up with, even if we don't win.

I designed a sweet bow, then I scanned it into my computer and when I seen it on the computer it looked like crap. I have photoshop and I'm actually pretty good in it, but trying to fix a weapon with a lot of curves is hard. I guess it don't matter much though since there is no real prize anyways.

Hi,
Glad to hear such enthusiastic response to the contest! The reason we're accepting hard copies this time is that we want to be sure to give everyone a chance to enter a contest or two. Sometimes we'll accept electronic entries, sometimes we'll accept prints/hard copies. If you think about it, not everyone has a computer art program, and not everyone has a scanner. Taking hand-drawn art to a place and getting it scanned and zipped into an electronic file is a whole lot more expensive than a postage stamp. So it's accessibility and outreach that prompts that particular rule.
Yes, you can send any sort of printed copy you want: Hand-drawn (pencil, markers, charcoal, pen and ink, crayon ); computer-generated art (colour or black and white print); watercolours; pastels; collage; oil paintings... Whatever fits your needs as an artist is great, but you do not need to be an artist to enter! We know that some of the best ideas will come from those who can't draft a stick figure but who have a really great idea for an in-game item. If you sent us chicken scratches but our Art Team was able to see it as having great potential for a cool weapon or shield, you're in. The Art Team will be interpreting the art, not using it straight on. So ideas are great, and execution, while it helps us visualize your idea, is really sort of secondary.
Polling an assortment of players, naturally those who enter (and those who win) would love to have more. But the most significant prize we could give, I was told, was recognition and incorporation into the game. That's what we went with, just as we did with the Guild Emblems and the Brand the Bosses Contests. If it's not adequate, well, I'm sorry, but it'll have to do. For one thing, I don't want impatient winners pinging me during the (very intense) last week before release saying "Please send me my free copy in advance so I can play the minute the game goes live." I'm kind, but I'm not so kind I can pull off the impossible!
I hope to see a ton of entries and thanks again for your support of the contest!
