I've not been playing Guild Wars very long, but today I went to the weapons guy in Ascalon and saw a button that said "customize".

As stupid as I am, I actually clicked it to see what it'd do to the axe that I'm using with my warrior, and after doing so, when I asked my friend he told me that it just made it so that only YOU could use the item.

I think this is a bit silly.........so is this true? And if so, what is the point of even doing this if other people will probably find similar items anyways?

Oh, ok... now that I have double-checked, you are indeed right... it added a 20% extra damage bonus to it.

Thanks for the responses...maybe it was worth the gold after all.

In most or maybe all the betas when you customized your weapons you couldn't`t sell it. They`ve made it where you can sell it in the retail version which was nice. Nothing like customizing a weapon only to have to trash it because it had no value.

Point being, in beta you wouldn`t want to customize a weapon unless it was very special. Now there is no reason not to customize.

There is a reason, if your going to trade it dont customize, Ive only customized 3 weps, and im ascended now.

I agree. I only customize weapons that either aren't worth much anyway, or that I intend to keep forever.

Only customise weapons when your at low level, and the price you sell them for really isnt worth it ^^

Yeah, you aren't going to be selling you 7-10 damage Long Sword to another player so why not get another 20% damage.

If you don't care about selling them then it's worth getting the extra 20% damage. Just keep in mind you can't give them to another character or friend later.

After costumization you'll get a 20% bonus on damage, which is a good thing
Despite the fact you can't trade it anymore (well, you can, just that other people cant use it ) you can still salvage it or sell it on an outfiter or merchant.
If the bow has special options, like extra energy or damage you miht as well salvage it with an expert tool and have a chance to get a weapon upgrade item..

Cheers.

agreed, Customizing is great. I think the only people that don't do it are the ones looking to make some coin down the road.

The truly amazing thing is that many of the same people who treat a 15% damage over 50 weapon as a gift from the gods, do not customize the same weapon for 20% more damage.

Not true at all. I often times have a few different weapons to use, staves vs. rods, or axe, hammer, sword etc for different ocassions. I could easily customize them. But When I am not actively using it I will usually let a guildy borrow it. Or if I find I found something better down the road, wouldn't it be nice to give a hand-me-down to a friend or guildie?

The 20% can sure be nice, but I like to keep my options open.

So looking at my reasoning above and following your accusatory generalization, I will make one of my own...
Those who do customize have no friends or a guild and can only find henchies to play with.

Not trying to start a flame and I am being facetious with my above comment, just a warning about using generalizations.

yeah for those peeps save a boatload of cash getting a 14% much cheaper and customize it for yourself if you can't bring yourself to lock down a 15% in your name which you can't trade/sell later.

as 34% >>>>>>> 15% ;D

Cherno I agree for the most part, but when it comes to those who live/die by the sword/axe/hammer/bow, that's where it'd be almost silly not too as it adds up.

No flame intended (truly) but wouldn't it make more sense to give them a cheap weapon (maybe a purple) with 12 or 13% added damage and let them customize for 20 percent more damage. That way, the gift weapon to your guildie would cost you less, have - say 33% added damage as opposed to 15% on the weapon you loan them now - and they would own it.

You would still be doing them a great favor, but you'd be furnishing a weapon with a lot more killing power that they could own instead of borrow.

It all takes into consideration what you have to start with and what your guildmates need. All my primary characters are level 20 and as are most with my guild officers and leader. Sometimes we just need to swap around items with different attributes to see how things work.

For example, last night we were doing a GvG (which we suck at ) and one warrior wanted to try axe illusionary weaponary...but guess what? No one had a decent enough axe Oh wait! I have the Razorstone she can borrow...oh crap! I customized it Sorry.

There are some weapons that I do customize. I was passed down a very nice sundering storm bow when I started my Ranger. It had almost perfect stats and I know that it was exactly what I needed throughout the whole game. In this case I customized. The extra 20% is very nice. But I knew I would be using that as my primary weapon all the time and wouldn't be passing it off to anyone anytime soon.

There are good reasons on both sides for doing it or not, I just like to see constructive debate/feedback occur rather than someone start out acussing people without considering some of the possible reasons for a contrary opinion.
