I'm assuming you mean the zombie minions, and not your pet animal...
You can't really direct the minions. They stay close to you when not in combat, and they pretty much pick their own targets when a fight starts.
In the pre-searing mission where you have to use minions to set off traps, there's a corpse on the other side of each trap. What you have to do is cast the animate spell to raise a minion from that corpse, and then it'll come running to you and set off the trap on the way.

Minion's will generally target whatever you attack - at least initially. They will target what you target most times if you attack something before they go off on their own and attack something... so basically if you run ahead and aggro something and attack it.. generally the minion's will go for what you attacked.. but don't count or rely on it.. hehehe. However, if the enemy gets in the minion's aggro range and your not attacking anything.. they will go for whatever they want to go for (this is what will happen most times.. hehe).
Oh, and "targeting" doesn't do anything for minion's either. It won't send them off to attack like it does with henchies...
Otherwise they will just generally attack whatever they want - be it what you want or not. They can definately be tricky to handle, but in the thick of things.. it's all fine and dandy in PvE anyways.. since generally the things they attack are in your aggro circle already (or close enough that it's a moot point) so your going to be having to kill them anyways... and better to have the minion's attack first and get the aggro rather than yourself (or your monk in the team).. since they can take quiete a beating.. at least in the 1st half of the game.. hehehe
As for setting off monster set traps - if there is a corpse on the other side of the trap, raise a minion and it'll run over the trap and set it off trying to get to you.. it's how to get past the Flame Traps in pre-searing.. and might be used in the PvE.. but don't think it has any use apart from pre-searing..

Again thanks for your kind words of wisdom. One final thing tho, Having just quit swg for various reasons and coming into this game on the back of a recomendation i have not been able to research it much so what am asking is ,is this build any good for pve/pvp as my toon on swg (BH/MCM for anyone that knows) excelled at both.

I'd personally go Trapping Ranger<Aka Wilderness Survival> and Battery Nec <with BR and stuff>. You'll always be loved if the enemies in PVE/PVP come through your traps and keeping your monk full <or any other caster, for that matter> with mana.
Also, look in "The Campfire" section of the forums, it'll help alot more.
