Exp...

From what I"ve read and what I've experianced it seems as though I only get exp if I engage an enemy. Being a monk I find this a big problem. Most of the time I am trying to heal my teammates and not worrying about engaging the enemy. Is it true that I only get experiance if I engage or have I just been misinformed?
