You didn't say what you plan to do, PvP or PvE? Or what your secondary is? For PvE a necro has a hard time grouping early on, especially minion masters because minions are weak and hard to keep alive, and they slow the game down while you create them, and they get in the way alot. Eventually you get bone fiend and verata's aura and a superior death rune, then the minion master becomes very powerful.
After ascendancy everyone realizes the value of a battery so if you pick battery skills and advertise yourself as a battery you will have no problem finding groups. For some areas like Sorrow's Furnace minion masters are in great demand because they control corpses to stop wells of suffering.
It's fun soloing with minions, but it's very hard when soloing high level mobs because it's impossible to get that first corpse. For mid-level mobs, when you get a dozen minions going you are unstoppable. I haven't figured out how to solo as a blood / curse necro but some people say they can.
For PvP necros are very high damage dealers because their attacks always hit and ignore armor, although soul reaping is mostly useless and for 4 ppl arenas you won't be using minions. Bring blood is power and you are a monk's best friend. Some curses like feast of corruption are overwhelmingly powerful on certain teams. Plus someone always has to bring rend enchantments for nerfing high-enchantment iron monks.
Dunno. I like my necro. I have a warrior and ele but I keep coming back to the necro. He's the most versatile of the bunch. I advertise myself as being able to do battery or minions and I never have trouble finding a group. (I have the gear and skills to do both.)
