Chapter 2 - New Races?

It would be an interesting exercise to come up with some possible new professions for Chapter 2, but personally I think it would be more fun to come up with some new races.

For instance :

a) Troll : Ogre equivalent. Not very bright but strong. Rather like wrestlers. Good natural defence, can only use clubs as weapons.
Motto : ‘If it moves, hit it. If it doesn’t move, wait until it does move, then hit it.’
Sexes : Unknown. Males are easily confused between females and small hills.
Diet : Trees. People. Animals. Vegetables. Minerals. Anything in between.

b) Dwarf : Vertically-challenged. All of their drinking songs consist of the word ‘gold’. Have elevated beards to an art-form. Can only use axes.
Motto : ‘You will be the same height as me if I chop off your legs.’
Sexes : Hard to tell as both males and females have beards. Asking another dwarf for a date can lead to unfortunate consequences.
Diet : Dwarf bread (can also double as a weapon). Edible berries. Very strong cheese. Ale. More ale. Lots more ale.

c) Elf : Tall. Thin. Pointy ears. Very green. Continually moan about people destroying the environment. Will only use bows as they are eco-friendly.
Motto : ‘Save the Droknar!’ and ‘Mergoyles are people too!’
Sexes : Three. Male, female and environmentalist.
Diet : Very limited. They wont eat meat, fish, eggs, curry, or anything interesting. Explains why they are so thin.

There must be others….

When the game first came out I think the word on the street was dwarves were slated for the next chapter.

Those words lied though. A new race would either mean making classes for it with all that comes with it or just be fancy shmancy graphics update, which would kindof be a waste of time...

No really, that's what I heard. What do you mean waste of time? New races and classes would be great. Even if you didn't put new classes in, just another race with different attributes would add great diversiy in the game

The frog said that he doesn't like any other race except humans.

So there won't be new races in Chapter 2.

Different attributes?

So a [new race] Elementalist wouldn't have Fire/Air/Water/Earth Magic & Energy Storage?

Um, no. Races would serve a cosmetic purpose only, and thus, are not a priority, and not going to affect the game at all. Therefore, new playable races should not warrant any of ANets time.

We went through this ridiculous discussion repeatedly during the beta and it seems we're doomed to keep seeing it in these increasingly carebear-stuffed forums. Adding playable races does nothing for the longevity of the game and nothing for strategy.

If races were to be balanced, then there could not be any advantages given to them--no race-based attributes and no race-based bonuses to existing attributes can be added in an expansion without unbalancing the current game. Logically, it follows then that should races be implemented, they'll have to be cosmetic only. Not only that, but adding races results in huge artistic efforts and masses of wasted hard drive space just so some carebears can pretend to be a Tengu. No thanks. Spend the money and development time where it matters: playable content, skill balance, and new maps, especially PVP maps.

No to races.

At present, I am against the introduction of new races in GW. The main argument in my mind is that it would create an enormous discontinuity in the storyline.

Anyone who has played through the game has witnessed that distinct species of creatures are native to certain regions of the map. For example, the Shiverpeaks are inhabited by Dwarves, and the Maguuma area is home to Ventari and his centaur-like brethren. Our heroes, likewise, begin their adventures in Ascalon, which is a human kingdom. In fact, for anyone that may not have noticed, the prevailing goal in Ascalon is to bludgeon/slice/magick any creature that is NOT a human.

Why all of the sudden would these foreign creatures appear, and why would Rurik agree to cooperate with them?

I know it's just an expample, but ANet have, thankfully, said elves would not be in guild wars.

Whoa dude, first of all get a life. No reason to talk like that

Second, I may not have been in beta but I was there since day one of live and yes there was talk of a dwaves as a second race

thirdly, who says you can't balance them out? You guys are just spitting out random bits of crap. Of course you can do player overhauls without ruining the content. It's been done before and can be done again.

fourthly, carebears? You sound like you came straight of WoW guns blazing. Pretending to be tengu? Excuse but this game is pretend. Unless you actually run around town with a bow and arrow and shoot down minotaurs.

Hoooooooooly crap this discussion got ruined

By what you're are saying, why should we even get new classes then? F- it right? Holy ignorance batman

Because it's exploitable if they have different stats. Make one race faster, and you can make a team to run around in GvG forever until VoD and gank the guild lord before the other team gets there. Make a race tougher, and people will take a full team to camp and take damage at a lower rate. More energy/less health, hello massive air/earth spiking (more massive than there is already).

One race is better for balance because everyone is equal, the only difference it attribute distribution, weapon mods and runeage. It may not matter in PvE, but it makes a world of difference in PvP.

Correction. There WILL be NEW races in chapter 2.

But you CAN'T play as them.

So you'll see a new race of NPC's but no you cannot play as that type of race.

So every other game in the history of mmo's can do it, but we can't. Gotcha

Ya an by the way to continue what I was saying earlier. Screw any aspect of roleplay right? Why further the story anymore by adding races? Waste of hard drive space as it was so eloquently put. No no, guild wars will last years due to pvp alone I guess. Remember PvP is only half the game. Just because people don't want "carebears" in the game. What an untterly ignorant thing to say

people want more customisable looking chars (hell I've seen my exact clone plenty of times) so put in some elf ears, some beards and some other random stuff, and let people look like an elf/troll/dwarf/half-tree if they want, but they will still have the same stats/attribs and no one else can moan.

Like I said earlier, ANet have already said Elves won't be in Guild Wars. They said they feel elves are covered plenty in other RPG's. Though the same can be said of dwarves.

I sometimes wonder if people on these forums would recognise humour if it got up and bit them. Nobody seriously expects any race other than human to appear as a playable option. The post was meant just as a gentle bit of fun to help balance the whinge content on here! And yes, the Discworld is one of my favourite places to relax after a long day I was very careful not to mention some of the other dwarven delicacies in Discworld - no Rat-onna-Stick!
