Working on my Photoshop skills...
William of Orange
I've been trying to get a hang of using Photoshop CS, and having ImageReady CS helps a ton too, since I can just merge pictures together with that and then edit as I like in Photoshop. This is the first actually decent picture I've done so far, right now I'm just trying to make pictures that William the Silent and myself can use for whatever reason.

Cutting that Ranger out wasn't hard at all, but erasing all of the old background pixels from the darker background he was on sucked big time. I hope it turned out alright, and I'd like some feedback on any styles/layers/etc. I can add to it to enhance its aesthetics.

And then just because I was bored. I'd be out and about, but I have college placement testing tomorrow at 8, so I need to stay home and get to bed early, meaning I have nothing to do. So this is the result...

haha. i like the second one. and the first one is good except that you can tell that the ranger you pasted into that picture was not in that type of environment. he was either sneaking around the wilds or at the tombs or some other bright desert-like area. you can tell because he looks lighter as if light is reflecting off him.

Yeah, I actually had realized that too after I had posted it here, so it's a good thing that I was lucky enough to save it as a PSD format so that my layers will still be intact. I'll have to play around with lighting then I suppose. Would using Global Lighting do the trick?

I like the artwork, but in reality, it's not yours. You're just adding text to already existing backgrounds.
Try to experiment and make your own backgrounds. I don't mean to have a go or anything, but I also dislike the cheap text effects you've used on the silver text in the first one.
Keep trying though. You only improve with practise.

Here is are instructions to make a simple "lighting" background. Doing it, however, you might understand more about layers:
NOTE: You have to work in RGB mode. If you are in Grayscale, go to Image > Mode > RGB
1- Start with a white background and make sure you have the default colours. If not, press D.
2- Filter > Render > Clouds
3- Filter > Render > Difference Clouds
4- Image > Ajustments > Levels
5- Drag the arrow a little to the left and press OK
6- Add a new layer on top, fill it with black and hide it.
7- Create a new layer on top
8- Go to channels, CTRL+Click on Red, Green or Blue
9- Go back to Layers, show the black layer and make sure you are working on the upper, empty layer.
10- Right-click, 'select inverse', select the desired colour in the palette and CTRL+Backspace
11- Create a new layer and fill the selection with white
12- Go to Select > Modify > Contract and contract by X pixels, select inverse and delete
You should get something like this:

Keep trying though. You only improve with practise. I'm just trying to get a feel for how I need to do things in Photoshop, so I can't really do anything spectacular on my own yet. I've been playing around with some of the styles and such in the program, and I've been thinking of little projects that I want to work on. Hopefully I can make my own little pictures, Guild Wars-related or not, fairly soon (month or so?)

Would anybody happen to know if there would be a place to find this 3D render...
http://www.guildwars.com/images/JPG/...er-004-lrg.jpg
with the background already chopped away? I know I've seen a couple places where there were some characters already on blank backgrounds, but that was a few days ago and I can't seem to find the link for it again.

Just delete it yourself. Use either Lasso/magnetic lasso/pen/magic wand. Although the Magic Wand usually is unstable, I think you can successfuly apply it here.
William of Orange
I'll give it another go, I tried Magic Wand before I posted but it didn't work so well. Magnetic lasso worked fairly well, but I had some trouble getting it to stick to the points I wanted it to, so I have to go through it again and try to work it out.

You migh tbe better to do a selection by color (under the "selection" heading) then adding back in the parts that you don't want to erase.
William of Orange
I'm still working on it, and I'm kind of stuck on where I want to go, but is this any sort of improvement at all? I'm sticking with the idea of trying to make cool backgrounds and stuff for Guild Wars, and I at least think that the idea behind this is good...
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24...01/Flames4.jpg
Edit: Fixed up the Guild Wars sign in the center, added both an Outer and Inner glow filter to the woman, adds a lot more definition to her than my rough copy did. I don't feel like I'm done though....
Thoughts?

If you want it to stand out a bit more try adding a outer glow.
EDIT - to the figure I've guess you edited now

The first one looks great! You did a good ob with putting the Ranger there. Even if it was very hard. And the latest one, with the Guild Wars Chick in the blue fire, thatis awesome. Thats someonething up my ally. Good job. (I wish I had Photoshop or somehting like it )

Most of you should recognize that the woman in the picture is from one of the 3D renders that Arena.net had made; it took some doing trying to get her off the original background and then replacing the hair which the Magic Eraser had taken out, since some of the hair and the background color were similar and it took all of those similar sections out. Changed the opacity of her layer (65%), tinkered with the settings on the Outer Glow and the Inner Glow, *edit: filtered her with Plastic Wrap,* and centered her.
I Googled for the background image, and then inverted it so it went from the orange flames to blue ones, so there wasn't much to that one. The Guild Wars sign is from the main Guild Wars sight, taken off of its background, cleaned up the remaining background from around the letters using an eraser from anywhere between 1-3 pixels, and placed it on. I had planned on putting the picture though a filter and changing the apperance of the title, but I ended up just leaving it as is, at least for now. *I have since done this; "Guild Wars" text is now under a Gradient Overlay, Difference, Radial, 10% Size, using Blue to try and make it softer on the eyes against the overall blue.*
And if you think about it, of how ever many images that people make, how much of it is really their own? Of all of the backgrounds I've seen (and I have seen a lot when I've been looking the internet for screenshots and such), almost nobody has done a picture from scratch. Most of them are similar to the first one I posted; some assorted "Official Screenshot," an image of an in-game character or one from the backgrounds of the Guild Wars offical wallpapers, and the Guild Wars title.
I would create my own background, but I'm still playing around with changing up layers and everything to come to the desired effect. Once I have more free time to just sit around and start on my own project, I will. But for now, I'll do what I can as I continue to become accustomed to the program and its features.

I do see improvement, however do not justify with "other people do blah-blah-blah". The good backgrounds are made from scratch.
Apart from that, you're doing fine. There is a huge difference from your first picture and this one. Keep working .

It took me forever to go through this, but I just figured out tonight that you need to have the tool set on the Marque one in order to be able to do "Select Inverse." Feel free to call me retarded for that move...

I'm also working on changing around the Blue Flame one, so far it's mixed reactions on it. Some people like the blue; one guy said it looked like it was ethereal and he liked it. Others at another forum say it's too much blue, and I can definitely agree to that. I'll see what I can do; I may just keep the woman but change the background entirely...

For me having made the background, overall I don't think it's too bad. I'm sure that somebody (cough*Death at the Door*cough) will have some criticism for me It's all good though, I'm looking for good feedback, as long as it's constructive...
Edit: Forgot to mention that I need to go back through and fix up her face a little bit, where he head meets her neck the red got a little bit out of hand and makes it look somewhat funny.

Whosa Skylore
theyre good the first 2 coulda been a little better, but they were your first so they wernt gonna be that great. i loved the idea for the monk one, maybe you should kleep working on that one. and the ranger one, as everyone said the ranger is to bright. and the third one the lady in the blue, it was good execpt at the bottom around her legs and hair it got kinda frizzy, i dont know if that was just the picture or something else but over all they were very good and better then i could have ever done ;p
Elonis
for your monk backround picture i would polish up the test for Guildwars and make the monk head look like it is actually part of the picture. just a thought.
William of Orange
I'm kind of short on time to work on any of the pictures right now, since I have an enormous AP European History assignment that I need to start on, since it's due in about a month and I don't want to get screwed like our teacher said some people would. At some point I will go through those first couple of pictures I made and touch them up, because it is pretty obvious that the Ranger in the first picture does not really belong there, and then for the Bone Dragon eating the Monk, I'll just mess around with it and see if I can't create some cool effects for it.
With the third one (lady in blue flame), the hair was like that when I got the picture, except for me having to add some volume back in because the Magic Background Eraser which I used took out some of the darker, background-similar colored hair, but I see where you're coming from Skylore. I'll look into that one as well. I'm also going to be working with some of the screenshots which I took, but there was only one real action one. I just did think of an idea using the screenshots I took of myself playing the flute, the violin, and the drums on our Guild Island, so we'll see how that turns out in a couple of days.

I took a bunch of screenshots on Saturday night right after we had gotten our Guild hall when I was playing some instruments. Decided I wanted to slap them together to make this...
Nothing fancy, I was just bored. The text sucks, but I'm too lazy to look for anything else right now. Maybe tomorrow if I have time after working on my European History project.

Well, I'll agree with you that it is a lot of names and dates, but the class itself isn't all that bad.
And in all fairness, rats only spread the Plague; it was caused by neglect of living conditions by humans, since it was commonplace for people to throw their refuse and excrements right out the window into the alleys, and it's never good when all of that junk ends up in one big heap after running down the streets.
And I'm guessing by "that really evil Pope" you're talking about Pope Boniface VIII? His sale of indulgences and whatnot only goes to show you that absolute power corrupts absolutely, regardless of if you're the Pope or not. The Church had pretty much been omnipresent throughout the entire Dark Ages after the fall of Rome to barbarian chieftains, and the power that excommunication had over the masses was sufficient enough to make anybody crap their pants if they even breathed the wrong way.....
...And look what you've made me do. I've gone off on a rant
Edit: And speaking of Crusades, have you ever heard about the Children's Crusade? There were actually three little ones, and without boring you with the details, lets just say they didn't really do much to help take back the Holy Land, though they did provide some excellent slave labor for the slave masters in Northern Africa

In truth I don't remberm all of it. I took 5 classes 15 yrs ago and would have to BUFF up on them to be able to give you names and dates. What really bothered my and the reason I stopped was a really terible prof. She was pregnant and mean. She failed me because I could not spell. (all the info was 100% correct) Went to the Dean to get a new grade. She reminded me of a Pope.
It was a Dark time in human history. I would go so far as to say the only time it was as bad was during WWII.

That's too bad then, because the teacher that we have right now is honestly the best teacher that I have ever had. That's too bad about the mean pregnant woman though, but it doesn't really mean much anymore since it was 15 years ago. I'll agree that it's not fair, but I'm not sure if you could go so far as to say it was as bad as World War II

You had the screenshot of your character, and did a Magic Background Eraser to remove the darker colored background, which, in the process, also deleted some of the hair on your character that was most similar to the background (hence the somewhat choppy hair). Either that, or you did the Magnetic Lasso and accidentally chopped some hair out.
You then took that picture, copy it, and placed it against the Necromancer background which was ran through the Glowing Edges filter?
Text is Old English Text with an Outer Glow and a white Drop Shadow?
Nice effects for the first shot, but you'll have to talk to Death at the Door for some good comments, he likes to rip on peoples pictures, don't you? It's all good though, nice sig.

screenshot: yes
magnetic lasso: yarp
took some of the hair: yup
copied it: yes
necro backround: yes but i randomly messed with the color levels till it was an awesome purple lol
i used glow edges and also something else that i forgot for filters on the bg
and i used that one tool where you can distort the image and i moved the guild wars logo mixed w/ the purple background to make a sort of flame around her
then i sharpenned my copied screenshot a few times
not too much so it doesnt look like crap
and as for the text,........
For the tex, i used a font i downloaded, its the same font linkin park used for their "live in texas" cd/dvd
and i placed it precisely where i wanted
i copied the font layer twice and i made one have a filter i believe is called motion blur or something and i made it blur up and down
and then on the other layer i made it blur left and right so really there are 3 layers of text there
thanks for the feedback
this messed up so many times im just happy it came out right
in fact, imo, this is better than intermediate for begginers work bacause i have seen lots of bad photoshop.

I was not spared that fate for my first few pictures; in all honestly, they suck I haven't worked a whole lot with Photoshop lately, but I have a fairly decent understanding of how to manipulate layers and what the limitation of the tools are. Either tomorrow or Sunday I'll be working with some screenshots from the past event to make a new sig image for William the Silent and myself, and I'll also try and make us nice backgrounds to use if we feel like it. I'll post them once I have finished them up.
