I've been playing one of these simply because I find it fun, but how are they, really? I've seen very little in the way of real opinions on this class combination. Is it possible to build them into anything worthwhile? And if this has been discussed in depth in another thread, could someone link me?

Warrior/Ranger

Some would say this is a char class that defeats itself since rangers usually fight away from their enemies whereas a warrior is an in yo face kinda dude.

Well, I suppose if you go weapon/marksmanship Warrior, you can play the turtle since at range, you'll deal tons of damage forcing your enemy to get close where...

you'll deal tons of damage. I guess it can be win-win but the trick is making it work in all situations.

Warrior with a pet can be a real threat too so, I can see how this class can be well used. Problem is finding all the ranger skills that cost less than 10 energy. Don't want to be using a warrior's energy pool for much remember?

A friend of mine has been playing one of these classes during the betas as well. Little experiments here and there to see what would work best for him before everything resets on release. He's had some success with it. Only thing he's still working out is mobs of casters in PvE. Has a problem if he tries to run through and gets cornered on limited occassion in process. All in all doesn't seem to be doing too bad. ( I think that has more to do with familiaritythough) He's running a warrior/ranger with sword/hammer/tact/marksmanship/beast. Still deciding his favorite weapon choice.
Most of his skill usage is adrenal based and has a few kick shots from the marksman line for target calling purposes before getting stuck in. The extra initial damage before running in doesn't hurt to have. The pet helps out a little too. Makes for nice distraction and small damage boost for him if he needs it.
All in all, he's doing good. Have I seen any build articles on this?..nope..not a one. Might be something to suggest to them for a future article though.

Ranger/warrior is generally better than warrior/ranger. Using expertise and having more energy makes you much more versatile, and ranger armor is very good, possibly as good or better than warriors (vs. elemental). Warrior/ranger can work well as a warrior +pet, but ran/war is more flexible for most other characters.

To be honest, I really don't like those two combinations together in any form. The only reason I'd think about taking it would be to be a warrior who has a pet.

There's plusses to going both ways though. If you go war/ran you get the strength attribute which is really going to help you in melee, but if you go ran/war you get expertise which lowers the cost on all your attack skills.

Why do I keep seeing Pets in these suggestions? In PvE, I'm sure they're nice, but PvP... I dunno, I've never seen them work well. I mostly ignore the pets if they're attacking me.

I'm not sure if Apply Poison works on Non-Bow attacks. Sure the descriptions says "Attacks" and not "Bow Attacks" but we all know about descriptions and the lies/deceptions they include.

If anything, I'd have to say Ranger/Warrior would be the bext choice if I had to pick. The classes have quite a few similarities though... so using them together might not be the best choice. Both have formidable stances... +Speed skills... Weapon Specific attack skills... and, generally, both are good in only one area of combat, either Ranged or Close-Combat.

If you want to go with Ranger, maybe Ranger/Monk. If you want a warrior, you can have Wa/Elementalist or Wa/Monk or Wa/Necromancer... all three seem to be pretty popular. Oh, and Ranger/Mesmer is quite popular if you want to take down Casters/Monks.

As of Feb BWE Poison did work on non-bow weapons. One member of RoA played a R/W that used Apply Poison with his sword.

Well, that's kind of cool then... I threw together this R/W Build... might be something to think about.. I dunno, my experience with Warriors is limited. Especially Secondary ones.

Expertise: 10 (+2 if you can)
Beast Mastery: 6
Wilderness Suvival: 8 (+2 would be really helpful)
Swordsmanship: 11

Skills:

100 Blades
Tiger's Fury
Seeking Blade
Sever Artery
Gash
Flourish
Storm Chaser
Apply Poison

EDIT: Umm, now that I think of it... if you have a Warrior Secondary, do you gain Adrenaline when you are hit? lol, if not then this build is le screwed.

Well, if can't gain adrenaline, then I think I might go with this:

Savage Slash
100 Blades
Seeking Blade
Apply Poison
Tiger's Fury
Flourish
Storm Chaser
and Greater Conflageration OR Dryder's Defense

Ok, I'd assume that this build might want to use a Focus for more Energy OR a Shield that added to either Marksmenship or anything that benefited you... you won't meet the Requirements, so you're only after the Mods.

I don't like Dryders THAT much just because it has a LONG cooldown... I only put it there because I noticed that we're running a defense-less build... so we'll be relying on Monks for protection. Flourish is what will keep us attacking. Storm Chaser has a lenghty cooldown but it can be complimented with Greater Conflageration if we take it along. I like Storm Chaser because it's a speed boost AND another source of Energy... but the cooldown is bothering me.

I think that Tiger's Fury can really help this build... Expertise should lower the cost of our attack skills enough... So running a skill combo like Apply Poison + Tiger's Fury + 100 Blades or Seeking Blade + Normal Attacks... I think we're doing ok. And when Tiger's Fury ends, we use Flourish to get our energy back and try it all again. Apply Poison is pretty expensive, but Expertise should cut that down, considerably... so I think we're doing ok.

This is a really attack-heavy build, so if you're running low on health, you might want to Storm Chaser your ass back to the Monks, lol.

As with most of my builds, I have no idea if this would work...

well the only reason I could see to use those two professions together is if you wanted a pet. And pets can be ok in PvE. A lot of times in PvE I'm not too worried about needing all the skill slots so I can waste one or two on pet related skills and they add some help. Maybe a charm animal and revive animal.

To be honest though, I don't even use the pets ever.

Personally as I've stated, I think the best subclasses for ran are either nec or mesmer, monks can be effective too. I don't like putting ele's or war's on that build.

Also to note, bow attacks now count for a strike of adrenaline. So you can boost your adren while the enemy charges towards you, or if you're a bowman, spend your adren on Rush for a no-energy escape.

one of my chars in the last 2 betas has been a warrior/ranger, i found they could be pretty effective, better then the warrior/necro i played atleast. i went for the whole marks + weapon, then i added some survival skills in there for healing(troll unguent) and poison (apply poison) (works on weapons), then i just put a little into strength for bulls strike. heres my basic build if i can remeber right.

hunters shot
apply posion
troll unguent
flame trap
backbreaker
bulls strike
pin down
charm animal

i basically pulled out the bow and attacked from afar, using hunteres shot if they were moving, and occasionally other times, for +20 or so damage at time(theyve weakened it though now) then if somethin wanted a piece of me up close, i would usually hve enough energy for backbreaker, which would knock them down for 4 secs, enough time to cast flame trap = 3 secs of 40 damage. bulls strike if they wanted to run, muahahaha. then theres always the nice added posion to your attacks when u had the extra energy, i used troll unguent whenever i was taking damage. with the recently added marks changes im thinkin of going for super pet build, instead of the marks and ss skills. so then hammer, bs, and tatctics for a nice healing signet.
