Lag in big fights

My computer has some lag in big fights. I'm am not sure what is causing this. I have internet through my college. It is not super fast but a lot faster than dialup. Last night when I did a speed test it was over 600 kb per second. I've seen it be much faster than that. Also I doubt it is a computer. My computer has a 2.8 processor, 1 gig ram, 256 mb nvidea graphics card. When I turned off my firewall that helped a lot. Is there anything else I can do? I am new to PC's.

If its a college connection, they are NORMALLY extreamly fast.
But at certain times there could be a whole dorm room on it at the same time, downloading movies and other things that could steal away some bandwidth from you.
Your computer should run the game fine with those components. Try out another game online (like an MMO in a busy area, or an intense FPS battle) and see if it slows down again there.

It runs pretty well when I play Halo 2 on the xbox and that has a bunch of explosives. plus it runs well on my cousins laptop from my wireless. that's why i'm thinking there is some program that i am not turning off that is bogging my system down

well you already shut down the fire wall, make sure that any other software ie: virus protection, popup blocker etc etc, is not running.
