Trapper?

I just made a Ranger, and was wondering what would be the best trapper 2nd prof? Im having a hard tiem choosing between Mo and W... What do you guys think?

Well, trappers usually go through 3 branches:

R/*
R/W
R/Me

The R/* uses only rangers skills. Staples are the 3 non-elite traps, whirling def., and Oaths Shot for your elite.

The R/W is a ViM trapper, this is the same as above except you cant keep up WD constantly because your eilte is ViM.

The 3rd one is the R/Me, this guy uses the 4 traps (flame,barbed, dust, and spike {E}) and uses mantra of resolve to prevent interruption.

They all have their streangths; R/* is that your almost constantly trapping, R/W is an energy/health gaining machine, and the R/Me is impossible to interrupt (except for knockdowns).

Just another way I like to think of 'em: R/* is more of a well rounded spamming combat trapper, the R/W works best in balls and 8 person trapper groups, and the R/Me is you typical pre-emptive minefield/spot trapper.

If you aren't going /W or /Me it really doesnt matter - because you aren't going to carry any secondary skills (except maybe a rez if your a monk - but Rez Sig is better 99% of the time for even monk secondarys).

Ranger/Mesmer is getting more and more popular.

For a basic Ranger/Anything build they are usually like this:
Barbed
Flame
Dust
Serpents quickness/Oath Shot (Serp if you havent capped Oath yet)
Energizing
Quickening
Whirling/Throw Dirt (depends on situation)
Rez Sig

And they usually dont stray too far from that basic outline except for when tis a trapper team. Then most of the trappers will drop the spirits and run Healing Spring and another skill determined useful by the group, and only 2 or so will run the spirits.

Your Mesmer secondary usually forgets Whirling/Throw infavor of Mantra of Resolve, and drops Oath Shot for the elite trap. These go much slower than normal trappers, but are "safer" to use because you aren't relying on blindness and blocking attacks to not be interupted.

I would seriously reccomend R/Me. Traps are 'easily interruptable' meaning even normal attacks will interrupt you. At the cost and cast time of Traps, this can get very annoying. Resolve Trappers really are the way forward.

Ranger/W or Ranger/anything are used for group trapping though, and R/anything is the only one I've seen used for soloing .

Pure ranger trapping's speed just cant be matched. They can get down more than a dozen traps before the first's time is up.

Mesmer secondary is catching on though for trapping under people and in major battle situations. You'd be surprised at how many warriors will let you run up on them and sit a trap under their feet.

ive recently learned the fine art of trapping =P only used it for farming thus far tho .... and a little in random PvP to SOME usefulness

i like to use all 4 traps, spike dust flame barbed .. lay down as many as i can until quickening z spirit is gone.. then run and drag the group (trolls, scarab, golems) into them by using whirling defense from being hit and killed ... if you still have problems bring Inferno with ya .. but you shouldnt because spike trap knocks them down and keeps them in place >_< ... my Ranger has all secondaries except for warrior, which i figured would be pointless unless i used something like.. apply poison and hundred blades

I did have a reason for saying this and you just confirmed my assumption with your post.

A R/mo is not the same as a R/anything and I dont see how you can still think this after all thats been said in this thread.

Mantra of resolve and trap rangers are perfectly suited to each other. You dont need to put many attribute points into your inspiration to make it work.

A trappers biggest problem is being interupted while trapping. Mantra solves this where as a healing spell will not. Believe me, believe the others who have posted in this thread.
