ASCII characters in chat

Saw some people chatting in ASCII like characters..... musical notes while playing the flute etc. How is that done? One guy there kept bugging them for the answer and one of them told him "ALT-F4 brings up the menu" He went for it to everyones amusment......but seriously, how is it done?

I think u can just do alt+21 or alt+159 like normal. §ƒ

A really easy way to insert characters in your chat window is by bringing up the Windows utility: Character Map. I don't think every ascii or font character maps into the GW client, but many do. That's how you see people do stars, circles, etc.
I don't think using Alt+### works inside the client. This is a text/html enviroment and is different than the text fields inside the game client.
If anyone can actually make the alt+ method work I would be interested finding out exactly how they did it.
