Yeah, when i first bought GW i had 56k dial - up, and was getting LOADS of lag, so i stopped playing.
Being young(er) and foolish i didnt realise that it was infact my PC, not the internet connection that was causing the lag.
So GW will run fine using 56k, just make sure you have at least 512mb ram lying around.
Heres what my comp was at the time of the lag:
256mb RAM, No Video Card (Integrated crap), dial up.
Now its:
1,256mb RAM, GeForce 6800XT, 8mb broadband. So yeah works perfectly now
GW on 56K?

Right now, i'm being forced to play on a 24kb connection.
But I have to hand it to Anet. The game STILL runs great. 90% of the time. It just really stinks when I have a huge update to download at 3KB/sec.

anet is made of ex-blizzard employees and i think i read somewhere these were the guys who designed battle.net (in those days 56k was most common) so it appears that experience has carried on into guild wars =)
i used to play on 56k (called 56k, was ~40k max in reality ^^) and i was able to play interrupt ranger in team arenas (although when i first entered sorrows furnace after the update, no one else was there ^^)

A friend of mine just lost his adsl connection and he's on 56k for a while and playing guild wars successfully
Although he wishes he was still on adsl downloading on 56k is torture at the best of times, let alone while playing...
