Somethings *SPAM* gotta *SPAM* be *SPAM* done

Ok ... the title is a lil messed up. Thats because I'm getting a lil miffed with the trade spamming. I have the trade channel turned off and yet people ignorantly REFUSE to advertise in the trade channel.
I'm in Ascalon ... taking a day to actually HELP people who are stuck in the game, need a few items or pointers on where to go. What I get is spam and all caps too like:
WTB SWORD
WTS ||SKINS||INGOTS||IGNORANCE||
WTS ||SKINS||INGOTS||IGNORANCE||
WTS ||SKINS||INGOTS||IGNORANCE||
WTS ||SKINS||INGOTS||IGNORANCE||
WTS ||SKINS||INGOTS||IGNORANCE||
Seriously. I enjoy this game and want to help others out. Only to witness such blantant disregard for others. Something needs to be done to people who do this. The game is supposed to involve interaction with others but from what I can see ... many people are making this experience a frustrating one.
We need some of these local guards to kick some player a$$ and lock em up for an hour or two so they learn to smarten up.

You can disable trade chat with the click of a button. Play around with your chat window, you'll find it.

Oh, shut up. I read the post. I actually don't know how I missed that sentance, heh. Sorry.
I don't seem to run into many All-talk spammers. Sometimes, but not that often. But then, I'm never in Ascalon anymore. Eh, if you're helping people out I guess that's the place to be. Maybe help out the spammers, eh? Tell them about the trade channel if they'll listen. Otherwise, not a whole lot you can do. One step at a time.

I've been putting people on ignore. Anyone know what the limit is for putting people on ignore?

Also, informing people they should use the trade channel is utterly useless because they just keep spamming.
I seriously think some people's accounts should get a temp time out for being asshats, with a reason why they got tossed in the slammer. Then maybe they would think otherwise. Or at least ... think. =\

we desperately need an auction house in this game, or some kind of player vendor mode. That should kill the trade spam.
Since hypocrisy is one of my middle names, I must admit to using more than one line in the trade channel, and occasionally in the all channel, because that sucker scrolls pretty fast and I would like to sell something without standing in place for an hour.
for the lub of jebus, give me a merchant mode or an auction house.

I found that most people use the trade channel when you ask them politely.

You see spam all over the place, even the trade channel is abused to hell, thankfully it's much better than an earlier beta which there was no trade channel.
In heavily populated cities it is even a challenge to advertised your own stuff in trade channels, because there is always some idiot spamming every second or so. But even without one idiot spamming there is often many people advertising so it scrolls quickly
Suggestions:
-Increase the limit to at least 5 seconds for sending repeated messages (by hitting the up key) in cities.
-Do not send ANY messages to normal chat if it contains WTS, WTB and some other key words (make sure to display - "Try the Trade channel to trade items" - to new users)
-Some way to report users that disregard these features
-A dedicated trade section of some kind, you could have a wall in cities to "pin up" ads for items that would cost money, and could be filtered, limits should be placed on these also.
-Maybe a additional filter for the trade channel for each player class - warrior, monk etc.

Aye, but its only a minor problem. I too have found that if you ask them to nicely to go to the trade chan, they usually do. This is do to the fact that the game is still new, so there are ALOT of newbies running around. I dont blame them for that.
The OP's punishment for this is insane, they are not currsing at you. They are simply trying to trade. There would be no real way to do this, do you want someone watching *all* of the text 24-7?
The second poster didnt say anything degrading, he was only trying to be helpfull. Yes he didnt read the full post, but who hasent made a dumb mistake like that. I know I have, and just recently..................

Yeah, I've had to put the regular chat channel on ignore too because people are either too stupid or just don't care to use the trade channel to peddle their wares. How hard is it to understand? It's clearly marked as "trade"
Pevil Lihatuh
lol yes its true. Be it in regular OR trade channel. If you want to sell anything you too are usually forced into 'up enter up enter up enter' to fight with the other neverending spam; doing nothing but annoying yourself and making people turn off trade. It's just losing customers!
We need something like the auction house; you just put the item in there, with a price, and someone comes along thinking 'i know i want to buy black dye'. So they can 'search' the auction house and it brings up a list. They see yours is 10 cheaper than everyone elses, they buy and suddenly you have money in your pocket! yay!

not to mention a lot of these 'newbies' are in Lions Arch I don't mind it in pre-sear coz sure, most of them probably are new to the game. Fair enough. Heck I wouldn't mind it post-sear as long as it wasn't spammed every 5 seconds!

Tell the person doing it to use trade channel. Boycot trading with anyone who keeps using main chat for trades. Tell other people to do that aswell.
CrazyGirl
as a seller, its hard to show our items when people do that, i hate it

Oh yeah!
*Notice: None of those lines were mine.
Sadly, this spam hurts only the people who REALLY want to sell/buy something. How can one follow a conversation if someone spams the world declaring he wishes to sell a rusty butterknife of -2 health degeneration for 500 gold?
I honestly don't know about the auction houses: how hard will they be to impliment?

i haven't managed to sell a single thing thanks to the spam :P and unfortunately your 'quote' there is 100% accurate... *sigh*

Agreed. I made a post before about this. It's getting rediculous.
An auction house, whilst a good solution, will more likely be a future release product. In the mean while, what can be done fast? I've suggested a time limit on how fast you can post to the trade channel, but is there anything else that we can feasibly be done?

Unfortunately, spam is a fact of life in any MMO environment.
Someone suggested player vendors. Star Wars Galaxies had player vendors, most of the spam was converted from "WTS [item] for [credits]" into "go to my player vendor at ###, ### [planet] blah blah blah", it just doesn't help.
It's more proof for me, however, that people are stupid.

I have a great idea.
Make all messages with either WTT, WTS or WTB be auto-sent to the trade channel.
Shouldn't be too hard, since they already have the system for censoring.

MCS
You REALLY don't need to be in ascalon EXCEPT for trading (then you can't avoid the spam)
But said you said you're there helping people or something, help people in a higher district number. The closer to 1 you are the more spam there is. In like 50 there isn't much spam.

I honestly think that ArenaNet understands the situation is working on many possible solutions, if they have one, I doubt they'll wait for future chapters because this is an immideate problem.
But I have to disagree about spam from player stores. In FFXI they had them, but spamming from it was quite rare. That was one of the nice things about that game, spam was limited.

I support the auction house idea. While it won't eliminate the spam, having one central area where sellers know that their item will be seen by anyone looking for it could reduce the spam.
Midnyte
I agree with MCS on the idea of moving to a higher number district. I experienced first hand when I tried it just to see the difference, and there is a difference. Example: district #1 becomes full at "x" amount of people, so they open a district #2 for the overflow and so on... I must admit that the spam is much less on the higher numbered district, and would be a good place for you to go to if you just wanna help people out without watching a bunch of spam go by. I don't like to shut off chat channels myself. I always feel that if I shut of a channel I might miss something good. Yeah, I do hope they can fix this somewhat with auction houses or something like that.
Dreamsmith
People only spam all-chat because it works. Make sure it doesn't work. I tried an experiment the other day where, when people wouldn't stop spamming all-chat even after being asked to take it to the trade channel, I would merely follow every one of their WTS messages with, "<so-and-so> is a scammer! Don't trade with him!" This actually got them to stop in all but one case, and in that one case it at least got him to stop for a while, since he was too busy sending me angry whispers to spam all-chat.
eventhorizen
Yeah spamming is a pain in the ass, and there is only one way I can think of it to drive that message home. If someone is fooling around in a group im in, in arena or quest whatever, ill ask them to stop, then ill just leave. Hopefully if people realise their just annoying people, and that people (me) will just leave them underpowered and undermanned in the middle of a huge quest or pvp fight, then it might suck on the other non spammers, but it has to be done.
Teach these kiddies manners. Its all we can try and do.

People either whisper, talk in team when applicable, talk in guild, or I never hear them

Aye, but they sometimes forget, I have made that mistake before. The point being is that if you ask nicely instead of " GO TO THE ****ING TRADE CHAN YOU DIP****," you will be suprised how many people acually do.

Heres a recent example of how people react ...
People need a time out for behavior like this.

Some people are asshats and you cant change that, that has however not happend to me. I am simply saying try and be nice first, the if it dosent work ignore then.
Also, how did you get that pic so quick.......
EDIT: Thats a whisper, it isnt in the publics eye. You want him to have a timeout for being an ass, but I reality you are the only person who was affected by him.
Stev0
Whisper or not ... if this is the attitude of someone online in a game that is supposed to promote team work and some kind of social skill. This guy should go back to CounterStrike. That and the fact that I had some tact to POLITELY ask him to take it to a trade channel since I was answering a question someone asked about how to get to the pockmark flats.
Again... just another slice of the crap people get away with.

Aye, but it would be extreamly hard for Anet to monitor *every* whisper. I do agree that the person here was out of line, but there is little that can be done about it.

I wait for people to ASK for stuff before I go belting my lungs out about whatever I have. It is honestly easier to chill out in a district, wait for someone to say "wtb iron ingots, hide squares, etc." and then I act upon it real quick. I am always the first one to get the deal too cause I am not busy spamming.
