Are you a giver or a taker?
xenoranger
As stupid as this sounds, I generally just give items away to lower level characters. Mainly b/c I know there was always someone more experienced in the game helping me out, so I figure it's like Karma or something. Either way, just curious about the rest of y'all.
Shanaeri Rynale
My main criteria for giving stuff away is, is the person looking for a helping hand or begging. If begging then I tend to ignore it.
I would rather teach a man to fish etc etc..

RTSFirebat
Not really a giver me, as I need all my money to buy things for my own characters. I do give people some minor gold if they need it, but they first have to explain what its for.

Simple: Giver.
Beggers must go elsewhere, BUT, I like to give away things to newer (not lower, newer) players in the game, mostly upgrades or a weapon of greater use to them, but no use to me (bow 13-26 or 14-27, Hammer 18-32, etc...)
I am a Guild Leader and I give my Mates anything they need, so long as I have it. I just spent 9k on a Mate that just Ascended - on his Droks armor (armor and materials, runes, dye, etc...) I go on trappping runs into UW - Mates ride for free. FoW playtime? Mates ride for free, and some PUG players too.
I rather give than take, but, do I like having gold - YESSIREE!
If I had no gold, how do I help Guild Mates? or anyone or that matter?

I'll give items to guildies and help them pay for their Drok's armour and skills.
I am not fussed about becoming mega-rich. All my characters have 15k armour, which, IMO looks better than fissure armour, so I really don't need cash like that.
As to beggars, there are an amazing amount of level 20s who go around begging, and I find that ludicrous!

I just finished some fun holiday GW shopping for christmas :P and to my realization i found that i had no space so i gave my presents early to some ppl
Mostly i just leave drops on the floor or "accidentally" drop them and since i unlocked everything i usually give the guildies unid runes for them to unlock... except if they are sup vigor or abs (i rarely get now adays) wich then i just let them id it and give it back to me.

Obsiedion
I like to help people help themselves, like Shanaeri Rynale said give a man a fish yada yada yada, but also when i get a good item, i am proud i worked for it, even if i have had help, so i would rather help someone have that feeling of achievement, rather then just giving stuff away. Ofcourse, like every rule, there are exceptions, but this is my "rule of thumb"
Noxgenus
i give nice items away to beginners because i hate standing for hours trying to sell shit
i like gaming not selling

Über taker!
Joking, I pretty much help myself but I never take from anyone. I give on occation but I prefere to tell people how to get stuff rather than give them. In my previous guild I was alot more experienced than everyone else, so when they saw my 15k armor they just started begging. Crikey...
If I see people begging I pretty much just bash them and tell them to get it themselves. If newbies have by mistake salvaged their only sword thinking they still have it after a salvage, I'm happy to give them something.

Maxiemonster
Both. I give all my Purple, Max Dmg, bad dmg modded items to low lvl guys, I just store them, and give all of them away every once in a while. Though, I also take items people give to me if I need them. Most people like it when you accept the item(s) you give someone else.
boxterduke
I always give free stuff that's kinda hard to get.
Like a monk that needs 4 feathers or someone that needs plant fibers or so.
If I have them then I give them away. I go to ascalon area and give away minor runes to starting characters.
I notice that when I do that, its like karma, I sell the stuff I want to sell a lot faster

CAT
I give away all sigils i win to noob guilds in ascalon
Kalt
I give some stuff away to friends and people in my guild, but not to strangers, I prefer to sell them.
Racthoh
Was a giver, but too many people exploit your good-hearted nature. I still give stuff to the guild, and prehaps the off chance someone is compotent in a pug to actually deserve something if I don't need it.
Numa Pompilius
I give to guildies, sell really good stuff my guildies don't want cheap, and the rest goes to merchant.
I have stopped giving low-level players stuff because 1) it's hard to find a low-level willing to accept gifts (if I shout "giving away X" in Ascalon I invariably get a queue of lvl 20's in FoW armor and not a single low-leveller), and 2) I think it may spoil their enjoyment of the game.
After all, if I give them a gold weapon from the desert, they'll never need to look at a drop they get at least until the desert, probably the entire game.

im kinda annoyed at the ppl.. one in forge was spamming.. WTB 1 Parchment for 90 gold.. i got so pissed bought one for him and gave it free..
being nice or feeling sry i dunno.
as for free stuff.. everything i give to the guild is free.. even during FOW and UW.. and some missions.. guildies get dropss. like i have a few shards or ectos.. i dump like 1 or 2 and free for grabs.

Teufel Eldritch
I give away all green & gold items that I cant/wont use I find to my guildies & friends. They in turn do the same for me. I no longer give items away to anyone else tho. As others have stated... been taken advantage of to many times & I dont want to make the game to easy for the lowbies. Everything else goes to the NPC merchant.
Rc The Mad
Giver. When I get max damage weapons that are pretty common that I have no intention of trying to sell other than to a merchant, I'll usually go into ascalon and advertise that the first person below level 10/15 to message me can have it for free. Once in a while I'll get someone that PMs me saying they're new to the game and that they could really use a good weapon, so I'll save it and give it to them. I don't reward begging though. Asking once is enough.
I've given away probably close to 50 close to max fiery dragon swords this way because newer players tend to like them more and I get them all the time.

Neither. I buy my own stuff and sell my own stuff. However I wont refuse if someone offers to give me something for free that I'm advertising to buy.

Kinda sad.
I do not give money, but I do give Purple, yellow, or any other color weapon (except blue) to players below lvl 10. Mainly b/c it's equipping them to help themselves.
I don't believe in running, but that's because most people are looking to go somewhere they shouldn't be yet. (I've done running before, and after having a character in a zone that they're not prepared for, I'm 100% against it).
Finally, I don't believe in deserters. If someone wants help with a quest, fine, but if they take off somewhere else (not on accident) or desert me, they're gone. Ignore list, and I don't help them anymore.
That's my criteria.
asdar
Neither, I won't take something if it's offered. I guess the exception is that I have given stuff to guild mates before, and I got some black dye from them.
Just the same, I don't like giving things away to newcomers because I think it ruins the game. It's too easy already and if you give them a max damage weapon just out of searing what little challeng was there is gone.

A tip - don't give your stuff away if it is max damage/armor/energy. Sell it to someone for insanely cheap. That way they feel that they've "earned" it, and don't feel like they've been given a handout.
Kind of like the "teach to fish" argument above. They will likely take that experience and work harder to accumulate gold for the next good purchase, and will hopefully teach them something about market values of items in the future.

SincorpDeath
I've learned that the best and most satisfying way to give away items is during or after a mission with a decent PuG. I've given away sup. nec runes and other items to newer players that were polite and worked well as a group. Otherwise, i'll just sell my pickups to the merchant.
Damon Windwalker
I don't respond to town beggars. However, if I'm in a party (with people actually playing, not just running) I'll help out. Example: In a lower level group the other night, we got to a new town, and one of the guys wanted to get armor. He was short on crafting materials - and since I got plenty, then sure - here ya go.
The people who just hang around town saying "Can someone spare me 1k for new armor" - no - they can go out and get their own gold, just like everyone else does.
Also like Sincorp said - I believe in "Need Before Greed" - I offer things I think might help out teammates during missions/quests.

Loviatar
giver but only to people i know a bit.
i load up with nice (but useless to me) golds/purples and just ask them to open a trade window and fill it up.
they ask how much and i say take it no charge.
wonderful reactions from them well worth 10x the bit of gold i could have gotten.
i tell them that anything THEY cant use feel free to pass on to friends as well.
wont get rich but i am having fun
MSecorsky
I like to find lower levels in Ascalon of specific characters for extra items that I have at random. If they'll show me what they're using and are generally good about the whole thing, I'll give them something better if I have it.
Of course, if they're already using a max damage whatever, I'll just thank them for their time and find someone else.
Giver.

I'm a little of both
Explanation: I've played the game enough that I can lead pretty much any group through a mission blindfolded provided that there are no "heros" in the group. I've taken my healer many times to higher end missions to help others through them and explained that I'm only there to help so cooperation is a must.
At the same time I've never had the ability so many of you show at figuring out those skill/build combinations that make soloing possible, or the HoH/PvP team builds<--my brain just doesn't work that way. And in those cases I've relied on others generosity of painting the picture.
I don't ever beg and can't stand seeing people shouting "I need new armour can someone please GIVE me 3k". Take it from someone who's been homeless in real life and worked to get myself back into the world............it takes work but it can be done.

I help out guildies as much as I can. I'm not rich, and a gold drop is a rare occurance for me. I have had guildies give me things as well. I guess I'm kind of in the middle between giver and taker as far as their concerned.
As far as the general population is concerned, I've never had anyone offer to give me anything. I do give out items from time to time. But not to beggars and never gold. I'll give away an extra weapons mod if I happen to get one. I've given items for collector's (Ancient Eye's, White Mantle Badges etc.) so that the person can get the collector's item they want. I'd give more if I had more, but all that ever seems to drop for me is collector crap. Not even the good stuff that can be turned in for useful items, just the crap. Still I do what I can.
I do try to answer questions in the All Chat channel if I can, again I subscribe to the "Teach a man to fish" philosophy.

Giver - to decent people in PUG's, to guildmates when I was in a guild, and always to my wife (she plays too). It just makes sense to me to help the people that are helping you. I don't give things to random people and I never give to beggars, but when I sell I usually sell cheap. (I'll often have the other player make an offer, and if it's reasonable, I'll sell the item for 1/2 of what they offered.)
dont feel no pain

i dont realy know why but i just give give give
eg. in ascalon city and some random guy trys to trade me 70 gold a customized 11-18 hammer (so sad) and a green dye for a nice sword ...soo i give him 10k and a gold sword LOL.
eg2. w/mo at augury tells me "o ye i managed to take 2 hydra the other day"
so i teach him grifon farming and pay for the armor he needs.....
that was before..
now: i give stuff my guildies need (i'm officer of The Master Casters)
taker=nope

I used to keep to myself but i have found most of my playing now is UW/FoW or farming/helping guildies(gotta be ready for all the new stuff on Ch2). I have everything i would want in the game atm so I give most everything away. I have a few close out of game freinds that play, they get first dibs but everything else go to guildies then the ascalon kids.

I had an experience last night that made me both a giver and a taker. I had a message in game from a former guildy who needed help leveling. So I used my w/mo to take him through a couple of missions. I also gave him a small amount of gold to help him save toward his armor.
Mostly I left my drops for him ... I picked up anything that he wanted and dropped it so he could pick it up. But I did keep one rare drop for myself (a superior absorb). I've finished the game with 5 characters but it was the first time that specific rune has dropped for me. I was especially surprised that it happened at such an early stage of the game.
It made me wonder ... maybe there is a built-in karma counter, hidden somewhere in the software that rewards good deeds, grin.

I'm both a giver and taker.
I give stuffs like golds, purple, gold, or unwanted items from my storage to people for free. Also i help complete strangers with their missions or quests if i get invited. I take things from guildmates too cuz i admit.. i'm poor and need help. With 3 characters (1 a mesmer, 1 a ele and this one a tank) you need tons of golds to get them well-equiped.

Roza
Both giver and taker as well.
I happen to think that being a giver but being happy to receive as well is the best attitude in life. Better than only giving but not wanting to accept (if it is more than mere politeness), only wanting to receive or - worst of all - wanting to neither receive or give.
I have given gold (not that much, as I tend to be rather poor), lots of materials, some weapons. And I have helped people with missions often. I have given mostly to guildies, sometimes to friends outside my guild. And infrequently to strangers. I don't mind people who ask for something (that is not begging). And I have received a couple of very nice weapons.

I used to give a lot, but nobody in my guild needs anything anymore (selective entrance), and I got sick of people asking for more when I've already given them 20k of very sellable items.

The thing about beggars, is they tend to stop begging if you help them out. This may not apply to everyone. Some people are just better at begging to where it seems like only needing a "helping hand". It's still begging. I say, if they speak english pretty well then let em have what they want.
