R/Me

Ive been playing mostly pve and want to get my feet wet in pvp.
I'm looking for suggestions on 'general purpose' ranger builds rather than a specialized role so I can experiment to see what I like to do.

Right now I'm thinking:
Distracting
Debilitating
Pin Down (Savage/Poison Arrow?)
Troll Ungent
Whirling Defense (Throw Dirt?)
Rez Signet
Preparation (Kindle/Apply/Melandru's?)
Trap (Spike/Barbed/Healing Spring?)

Suggestions?

first of all a general build won't let you get much of an idea of anything.

the 3 times of rangers around are basically:
spiker/damage dealer
interupter
trapper

have a go with each of these in comp arena to ahev a feel for what kind of build that you like.

Shen's right. Your build as it is will probably work well enough to get you some kills and let you deal with a wide variety of situations but you won't be able to do anything really well. I won't repeat what Shen said about the 3 common types of rangers so I'll just suggest a few simple builds for Competition Arenas that uses only Ranger skills:

Interrupt:
15 Marksmanship, 11 Wilderness Survival, 11 Expertise

Savage Shot
Punishing Shot {E}
Distracting Shot
Kindle Arrows
(free skill, eg: Troll Unguent for a little healing)
(free skill, eg: Whirling Defense for a little defense)
Ressurection Signet

Trapping
15 Wilderness Survival, 11 Marksmanship, 11 Expertise

Poison Arrow {E}
Distracting Shot
Barbed Trap
Flame Trap
Dust Trap
Serpent's Quickness
Whirling Defense
Ressurection Signet

This is pretty much the IVEX trapper pre-build. Serpent's Quickness for faster traps, Whirling Defense if you're targeted with attacks and still want to trap. Try trapping offensively, right under the enemies' feet for some nice results.

Spiker/Damage Dealer

15 Marksmanship, 11 Wilderness Survival, 11 Expertise
5:1 Vampiric Bow String

Dual Shot
Quick Shot {E}
Distracting Shot
Kindle Arrows
Favorable Winds
Predatory Season
Winnowing
Ressurection Signet

All the damage stuff (besides the Orders) that may be featured in a Ranger Spike build packed into 1 character.
5+18+5+4+6 = +38 damage per shot from Preparations/Spirits/String.
Dual Shot for +76 extra damage per arrow.
Quick Shot to spam all those shots quickly.
This build can really screw your teammates up thanks to Predatory Season. :P

Ressurection Signet Why Distracting Shot ? Replace that with Savage Shot instead, it has a lower recharge time and more damage. Winnowing wont work when you use Kindle Arrows because you wont be doing physical damage. Also, why do you have Predatory Season ? It doesnt add any damage to attacks and you have no points in Beastmastery.

Savage shot can deal more damage, but only interrupts the skill, leaving the caster free to use it again right away. Distract shot not only interrupts, but will also force the skill that was interrupted to recharge for 20 seconds. Very usefull against monks spamming the same type of healing skill, or on Ele's spamming lightning strike, or whatever.

For this build, the recharge time is way too high. This skill is almost ubiquitous on my rangers but I wouldnt use it in this situation.

Ressurection Signet In competition arena (which is what you suggested these builds for) blind will own you. You have no means to deal with it and you are certainly guaranteed no monk. The one thing about competition arena is you need to be as self sufficient as possible. If you have to go R/N for plague touch or R/Mo for Mend Ailment, so be it. You kill nothing when you can't hit.

Your first build quoted has only 7 skills total. Obviously it will be easy to augment it to include a condition handler. For the second Predatory Season is okay but Winnowing is weak. I recommend swapping it out for a condition handler.
