You might remember me trying to buy comp parts in an old thread.

Well I kind of had life to atten to but now I'm seriously going to start buying what I need.

Basically I'm starting from scratch:

Motherboard: 939 socket kind
Processor: Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 939 Socket
Power Supply: 450+
Graphics card: I thinking x16 PCI Geforce GT 6600 (something better?)
Hard drive: 80 gigs +
CD drive/burner: ???

I know I'm leaving some things out. (RAM, other stuff but I can get that figured out)

This will be my first attempt at making one (Or having my local shop build it) and I'm trying to shop under 1000$ dollars.. Basically anything below 900 is good.

Anything else you could suggest (I'm on newegg just to let you know) would be wonderful,

Thanks in advance =)

What would be really badass is if you went dual channel with two 1 GB sticks of RAM. You might want to look into that, you could make quite a beast.

I agree. 1Gb is the new minimum. 2Gb will be the sweet spot sooner then you think. Speaking of thinking...think Vista!

So you guys agree with the base equipment is fine?

And the 2gb RAM would be perfect I see.

So everything else is fine as far as the other stuff.

Why does everyone always rub it in...
I have the old 256-a roonay of ram, and it works fine for me. Now Vista, isn't all it's cracked up to be. Anyways, I'm gonna keep XP for as long as I can!

I agree. As neat as it seems, I'm staying safe and keeping to my pattern of waiting at least 6 months to a year before I buy a new M$ distro so they can work out all the bugs.

Detis_Zan: I think you'll have one nice rig with what you've got chosen. Though if money isn't an issue, you might even want to look into an even bigger power supply and/or a backup UPS, in case you feel like adding some mods or anything else to your computer that may need power at a later time. Serial ATA in a RAID array would be sweet too. That's just what I would do, and only if I had all the money in the world ; you'll be fine with what you have planned out.

Exactly. One must wait for the new OS to work out it's kinks. Never forget Windows Millenium...I never will.

Thanks for the comments.

I kinda forgot how to make sure everything I'm getting is compatible with the Motherboard. =P

lol, we won't be able to see your shopping cart, but it does sound good spec wise. Definitly go High end on RAM. It's not that much more, and can help when it comes to the grinding (I suggest dual 1GB channel kit Min). As for Motherboards, if your not sure what to get (I build them for a living) I suggest ASUS or Gigabyte (for overclocking features). And BTW, the Video card is good, but if you can afford the GT model, get it.

You processor link takes you to a list of AMD processors.

I might recommend that you see if you can upgrade your hard drive from an 8 MB cache to 16 MB. Also, keep in mind that you do have RAID capability on your mobo in case you wanted to get another hard drive or get two smaller ones.

Your video card is godly, I love it. All in all, I'd love to see the specs and/or screenies when you're done.

XD Yeah I felt like going all the way and spend a little more for the V-card.

The processor is a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 1GHZ FSB Socket 939 to make up for the crappy links I make.

When it comes to Power supply my Mobo said it's 24 pin power connector so that does mean I have to find a power supply that's a 24 pin that matches.

Or get a converter?

Also is a Sound card needed badly?

Also for a case I noticed some come with a power supply =P I want the one I just found so I geuss I have to find one without a Power supply...

Detis...If you have the extra cash you should consider the Western Digital Raptor HD. THey cost more but the difference is pretty nice. OCZ dual channel memory is also nice

Well I already finished my shopping for what I wanted and paid roughly 1000$ for it all (My bank account is hurting a little) Once I get the parts and everything runs smoothly I'll post a thread all about it.

When I bought my 480W PSU it came with an adapter so it shouldn't be a problem i guess... Now I don't know if every PSU supplier does the same...

It's fine I got the right PSU (The tower I bought came with one but it sounds like it sucks from reviews) that will fit. =)
