Hey all,
What's the deal with precious items? All I notice is that they sell to merch for more.
Hope someone gets back to me on this.

There is no mystery here. You have solved the puzzle! Precious simply means a higher merchant value than a similar "normal" white version of exactly the same item.

You mean some little guy named Golum doesn't follow you around if you carry one too long?

I've also noticed that what materials you can obtain by salvaging an item is based off the merchant value of the item about 75% of the time. I've salvaged a lot of precious items and gotten the effects of the highly salvageable mod just because the item was worth so much to the merchant. But then again there is that 25% of the time when my theory just flops and you get like 9 iron.

That is kind of true. The amount of materials salvaged out of an item are based on it's rating. Such as armour that is 39-40 or a weapon or offhand that is max damage. They will have higher merchant values because of their higher stat rating. I also think higher stat rated items have a greater chance to give you a rare craftable than low rated items, but I haven't test this out hardcore. For example the leather armours in Southern Shiver give me leather squares more often than leather armours in old ascalon.

Generally precious items are better sold directly to the merchant. You might get a rare craftable out of it that is worth more, but selling to the merchant will consistantly give you more money.

Another trick to maximizing your value is to ID even your white items before you sell them. This is only really worth the expense of the ID kit on max rated items. You wouldn't want to do this for items in old ascalon or even up to jungle as typically the id'd value doesn't increase that much for those items. For max rated items you can often get another 20 - 50g per item.

Um, I think you pretty much nailed that one on the head. the 'precious' stat on unidentified items just means a merchant will buy them from you for more than normal.

Woohoo!!! Lets see how many people we can get to give the same answer.. I'll start.

you got it right! It is exactly that, higher merchant value.

Now for those of you who added stuff, thats fine but we don't need tons of people saying the same thing... (directed at post above mine)

Don't take any offense, just try not to do it again.

Woot. He nailed it on the head, which the main poster nailed on the head, it's higher merchant value! /Sarcasm

but really, besides precious and selling to merchants, I usually just salvage regular things. =)

The thing I've noticed most about "precious items" is what you get when you salvage them (usually rare craftings...) As mentioned by someone in an earlier post

So what you're saying is that you get more money from merchants if you sell them precious items? *boggle*

I used to love getting "precious" items when I hardcore Griffon-farmed. Selling all the precious to the merch was getting me more money than selling the golds to players most of the time.
