First off, nice site. I wonder if one of these threads describes how you started this site and how you pilfered the talent from all of the other boards into one super site. I wonder if it all went smoothly or if there were some angry admins at your former homes, respectively. Alas, that is a discussion for another thread....

With a new fansite, you have to ask "What will differentiate this site from all the others" which I'm sure you guys have already done to a large degree. I think the sites that people bookmark and visit regularly have a niche that they specialize in. Knights-Templar has the best skill database, Guild-Hall has the best community and forum, VN Boards is official however there are just too many people for my taste and there are other minor attributes you can assign to the others of varying popularity.

When playing the game was such a rarity, you could succeed just by featuring an updated skill list. Now that the frequency at which you can play the game has increased (and will continue to do so), each site has to define themselves as being the authority on X. For instance, when the game releases, I would imagine the Knights-Templar don't get as many hits.

The niche that I think Gurus has carved out is newb guides and skill location. As we near the release dates, I think the success of this site will depend on how well you redirect your attention from the former to the latter. Everyone is starting to figure out what skills they want and don't need them defined much anymore however locating and acquiring them is a different story. This is where I'd like to see Gurus take the lead.

I want to know what missions to take my Signet of Capture on and what bosses to tell my team to hold off on killing (curse you ANet for not addressing this problem!)

I want to know in what order the trainers appear in the natural progression of things and what new skills they have over the previous one.

I want to know what bosses only exist in explorable areas and what skills they're hiding.

I want a chart of what materials are needed to craft a skill charm and where the best place to find those materials are.

Outside of the niche:

I want to know where every item used to craft anything (esp armor) can be found. There's still a good deal of confusion out there as to which salvage kit to use and when. You guys have a good guide on your site but it's somewhat hidden....a chart would probably better serve the community.

I want to know locations of charmable pets. A guide on "How to charm a bear" would probably shut down the site due to all the hits you'd get.

I want a feature article on Damage Over Time spells/hexes/conditions/etc. Which ones take off the most damage overall, which ones take off the most damage the quickest. What combination is the best for each scenario: mixing poison with 'on fire', phantasm with bleeding, etc?

I want to see a list of strengths and weaknesses for monsters. Weak vs. Holy, Strong vs Fire, etc. I doubt very many monks know how powerful they can be vs the undead.......of course they should be healing, not smiting.

I want to see a guide on how to make money. I'm not talking bugs here but good tips on how to amass a small fortune. I have some ideas but I'd rather hear it from the "experts". Salvaging for multiple items, crafting skill charms, sell vs salvage. Then there's the chart that everyone wants (but they don't know it yet)......the pricing guide. Just imagine everyone in-game referencing the "Guru Guide" for pricing. You'll be the veritable Beckett Monthly for Guild Wars......oh yeah, no one trades baseball cards anymore. The economist in Ensign is just itching to do this......of course it would take a lot of time.

It all started back in the summer of '86. I had just returned home from a hard day's work, amassing another small fortune in the stock market. Back then, I was generous in my excesses, and figured i'd call up a few friends .. we'd hit the big city, and paint the town red. I asked THX if he wanted to come, and he said 'oui.' Next, I asked Saus if he wanted to come with, and replied that it would be 'bodacious.' But, it still wasn't enough for a real party, so Saus called up all his friends and had them meet us at a swingin' club. I was interested in cruising the scene.. (do you have any idea how hard it is to find a cute girlfriend that likes anime and games? Sheesh!) but everyone else, perhaps a bit plastered by now (save myself, I don't drink) suggested that "It would be wicked awesome if we started a Guild Wars site" and everyone else was like "Awesome" and "Dude, yeah" and then someone was like "...what's Guild Wars?" to which .. none of us really had an answer for. So on that day, we made a solemn vow .. if we ever found out what Guild Wars .. that we would make a site unlike any other .. a site that truly hypostatized the springtime of our youth.

Something like that, anyway. It started with THX and myself, I invited Saus, and he brought in basically all of our site contributors. There isn't really any 'dirty laundry', and if there was, it wouldn't be fair to air it. Pay no attention to the blood leaking out from the closet door..

Quote: I want to know what missions to take my Signet of Capture on and what bosses to tell my team to hold off on killing (curse you ANet for not addressing this problem!) We already have this information as best as it can be filled out at this moment in time. If you look at any skill, below it should appear if it appears on any trainers, creatures, or bosses. If it's on a boss, checking its information will tell you where we encountered it. That's about the best we can do in this kind of situation, because boss locations aren't 'fixed', they have a set number of areas where they may appear in. We can say "We found so and so here," but I would still anticipate on running the mission more than once if you're trying to SoC something.

Quote: I want to know in what order the trainers appear in the natural progression of things and what new skills they have over the previous one. It's hard to present what is a 'natural' progression. The Temple of the Ages comes well before Denravi, but it's unlikely that anyone would be able to make it there first. The only truly practical thing we could do would be to have a world map that is image mapped to link to the information we have on each area already in the database. Now that I think about it, it's not a half bad idea, but it might be murder on people with Dial Up connections.

Quote: I want to know what bosses only exist in explorable areas and what skills they're hiding. As far as i've seen, just about any boss that appears in missions can also appear in EAs (minus quest relevant bosses, such as the White Mantle..) and i've yet to see an EA only boss. If there is, it's just too much re-scouting of areas (to make sure you haven't missed a potential boss spawn) for too few people, with only one weekend a month to gather information. Back when the NDA was still light and breezy, we could have gotten away with this. Nowadays... it's a different story.

You guys have a good guide on your site but it's somewhat hidden....a chart would probably better serve the community. It's not a bad idea to relocate and expound upon a 'crafting' section, since Weapons are now also craftable (again.) The problem, again, comes from simply not having enough time in one weekend a month to do this section properly. I was working on a list of what salvaged into what before the NDA was tightened .. but there's been so many changes since then, I wonder how much of it is even valid anymore. I would rather leave something blank with the intention of holding off until I could do it right, instead of putting up something that could be half wrong, and suffering endless complaints from people that read the site .. because people are vicious and demanding. I take enough abuse during the BWEs as is, no need to give people fodder for more, heh.

Some changes were made (again) but it should be easy to get in the general area where things appear this BWE (as their appearance is not always static, much like bosses.) As far as the Bear goes.. I don't think I can say anything about it.

We would certainly have to get someone else to do a 'game item value' index, because I hate MMO trading with exorbitant lust. If someone has something I need, and I have something they need, in my book .. that's a fair trade. I could care less if someone belives a Pooglewhazzashing is worth 5 Rikkledoogas and 7 Zammagooloos, while someone else believes a Zammagooloo is worth 3 Pooglewhazzashings and 8 Gurblefrixes. I think it was Diablo 2 that put the final nail in the coffin on this one for me. People should spend more time playing, and less time being capitalists. But if there's really a demand for this sort of thing .. well, we like to keep our options open.

the BF has kept something like that for a different game before, but it was mainly so he could make sure he was selling fairly and mock those that were trying to sell things for way more than others.

I think a giant map would be nice. Something where the missions and explorible areas have their boarders shown and we can click on any area to get all the info related to that area (monsters, most common drops, skills availible, etc.)

And somewhere on this site, there needs to be a picture of a cow that looks like its planning something evil.

Oh! We should also have a section dedicated to locating all the frogs in the game, with pictures of each. Maybe other stationary wildlife as well.

Just wanted to disagree with the original poster . VN Boards was designated official but I have not seen that for a while [I think it was WPE]. Furthermore, I will contest any day that the best forum community, bar none, is here. Intelligent, smart, and without the excess fat, the trio of THX, Spooky, and S. Rex is by far the best. Sprinkle in Aladdar and Ensign moderating these forums and a good stream of contributers, and as time moves forward, skill listing, community, etc will all be home with the Gurus.

Actually, I have been to and thoroughly checked out a couple other sites. This still has the largest collection of in-depth and easily accessible satistical base to me. ( much like going through an index at the beginning of a book rather than looking for it at the end)... The other oddity... this one seems to attract new members like flypaper... you got another 100 in the last week alone from what I can tell. That alone should say something.

I must say, also having Gaile pop in so often to give input on what we have to say about the game is a large boost as well. I think we just have a great staff here and a non-crapsack community (not saying that all others are, but you know...GW Guru is the best).

P.S. All kinds of ladies flock to me for going to this site.

I have to agree, I feel hotter everytime I visit this site.

I think this site actually has some of the most high level content as any other site out there it's just not always easy to find. We need to work on that and refine the ease of use here. That is in the works however.

I believe eventually you'll find almost everything of your heart's desire here.

this reminds me of a top relatively small dungeon seige site which lisa is closing in a few weeks to move on after 3 years of being a community

top talent
top admin/mods
a good crowd who over the years actually cared about the other members
willing to answer the same question for the 50th or 500th time in detail or give a link to the answer

if not for one of them saying how good GW was i might not have bothered with the jan BWE pass i had

this place feels right to me while the others ive been to just seem.........?

Yes, it's too bad you can't be a member of more than one guild because forming GW Guru guild with all of us in it would be pretty cool.

Hey, it was just my opinion. Let's all give a little credit to our roots though. I'll admit that I'm spending most of my GW time here however we all owe a debt to the Guild-Hall, OGaming, the VN Boards and even RPG Stars for some.

I want Gurus to be more than just the flavor of the month though and it will take more than a good forum base. (I'd also actually like to see them ditch the name Gurus......maybe Elite Skill or something so as to pay homage to its founding using siphoned off elite members from other boards....."Simpson you diabolical...")

Quote:
The problem, again, comes from simply not having enough time in one weekend a month to do this section properly. First, I wasn't aware that this site is shutting down once the game releases. You have all the time you need. Second, if you need workers to go out and gather information, almost every response on this thread reflects enthusiasm for a fansite comparable only to their love for the game itself. Send out a request for information and put them to the test.

I understand, Guild Hall is a good website but still it's not to polite to tell all of the members here about your feelings for Guild Hall.

GWG is closing?! What, GWG you can't do this to me! Your my life, I'l, I'll die without you!!!

I'm sorry, now I must commit suicide. This is to much.

Mmh.. I believe there was a misunderstanding in my wording. When I said we don't have enough time in one weekend a month, that's for now, the present. When Retail comes, we won't have to worry about the NDA, and we'll have all the time in the world to get this site the things it needs, the things it should have, and the things that'd be nice to have regardless, even if superfluous.

Those reasons are only why we don't have, or can't do, certain things at the moment. We're not closing the site down. After having been through the drama of starting over, once is enough .. we're going to be around for a long time yet to come.

I like a Character Optimization forum for Dungeons and Dragons tabletop RPG
http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=339
I hope eventually there will be a Guild Wars forum like it, maybe even on this site.
Also, it has a relatively good FAQ, some ideas from it can be used as an example

I was lucky to read a lot better forum FAQ a year or two ago, but unfortunately i can't find it now.

Without puckering up, this site is more than anyone could ask for, has given me the most information on GW, and is far more civilized than any of the others.

Kudos.
