R/W

I am a Ranger/Warrior R/W myself, but I am fairly new to Guild Wars (three months) and I'm still looking for great builds out there for my character.

I am looking for builds where Ranger/Warriors R/W use the
-bow
-sword
-axe
-hammer

I haven't really found any good builds with the hammer and I would like some, and as for sword and axe, I am still a bit new to the skills and would like to see other builds and information on skills, and I'm a fast learner.

Also, some help with the tactics attribute would be nice, knowing how tactics can improve my ranger's abilities.

Does anyone have anything?

R/W is the most inefficient class combo in existance.

W/E used to be bad in my eyes, but some people have shown quite a bit of ingenuity in making it efficient.

My biggest gripe about R/W is that you're taking 2 classes fighting from opposite ranges. At least W/E has some close range attacks worth using. Rangers have no good close range attacks.

Also, DO NOT use more than one weapon mastery. It's just not worth it.

There are however some decent setups due to some ranger skill specifics.

Ferocious Strike adds a boost to energy AND adrenaline. That screams warrior secondary to a degree.

If ranger preps worked with warrior attacks, they'd rock, but unfortunately, only Apply Poison seems to work with Warrior melee Attacks...

The only R/W I've seen fight that had any sense of danger to the field was this she-devil of a sexy ranger chick that totally buried our monk and was a REAL BEAST to catch if we gave chase...

I was aware of 4 skills she used that made my team's life into a living hell...

Crippling Shot {E}
Point Blank Shot
Frenzy
Rush

A jackhammer to the face if you will... owchie... Rush, even with 0 strength, using a bow [which charges adrenaline faster than a melee weapon for some stupid reason...] is a godsend for rangers who want a nice fast getaway at the ready [at 0 energy, holy shart! ]

That and her warrior skills needed no stat points to make her uber dangerous.

Outside from that, I suppose MAYBE some warrior shouts could help ya, like say, Victory is Mine [gah]... But at any rate, R/W is a tough combo to work with but if you can make it work, cool...

How are they the most inefficient type of profession combo? I have seen many ranger/warriors on my opponent's team and usually they end up beating us, and I consider myself an excellent ranger player.

And of course, duh, don't use two weapon attributes at the same time. But that is why I like Ranger/Warrior. When I get bored of shooting down opponents, I can go back to town and prep up for using a sword, axe, or hammer.

As for tactics [and some strength] skills, I want to know what skills can help me in battle either using a bow or melee weapon.

The point is, I like being a pure ranger, so I add the warrior class in so, occasionally, when i get bored i can switch to different fighting styles.

OK, just wanted to say I did some more research on secondary professions for the Ranger, and I found mesmer to be quite interesting. The thing is, I get bored sometimes of just shooting arrows and trapping down the enemy, and I would like to use a melee weapon every once and a while. Illusionary Weaponry looks like a good option. Plus mesmer has skills to help disruption and other helpful skills such as Mantra of Resolve, which helps me set traps.

But when making a PVE character, I would think that making a R/W would be better to start off with and go through the game, then switch to R/Me when I can.

Another question: Where do I go to get Illusionary Weaponry {E}?

Ive realized one thing about my r/w, that being a ranger is alot more fun, if you want to melee just create a w/m or w/?? whatever, which of course ive done, but after having played GW for about 4months ive found that my ranger is much more fun to play than my warrior/monk. few examples:

1.trapping fun as hell/espically in trapper specific grps.
2.interuption/ love knocking softies on ther butts/shutting down any spells
3.runner/ oh we can run with 4 run skills i can run for almost 40+secs

Just a few reasons why I play a ranger! Oh and the main reason why i play ranger is that alot of peeps underestimate our abilities, which in itself is very gratifying..

If i were to change my second profession from warrior it would be to mesmer! as you already know is a dam good mix for a ranger...!!!

Illusion and traps are a natural mix.. you're going to be up close, and bow doesn't do you much good, so may as well throw in some IW, right? For skill aquisition, try here.

http://www.xennon.co.uk/eliteskills/

Mantra of Resolve is nice for trapping, and TF helps with IW. Some people get 12 beast mastery and use IW, even with a pet. The downside to your extra armor being that you can't get 16 illusion, like a primary mesmer. Another thing a lot of people do is echo+debilating shot, or interrupts with arcane condundrum.

As for r/w... meh, it's not bad. I use r/w most of the time on my ranger, for one reason. Frenzy needs 0 points to be effective, and it takes less energy to boot, so it suits me great for pve. If I'm getting hit on, just switch to whirling defense and lay down a dust trap or something. In that respect, a r/w is basically like any other, but with a more dangerous IAS. Other people like to make stance tanks out of their R/Ws and have fun that way.

Another thing you might want to think about is that rangers can inflict almost any condition in the game. That makes them great for other condition skills, like Fevered Dreams, Virulence, Epidemic, Victory is Mine, etc. I try not to think that there's no such thing as a bad choice for a class combination, you just have to figure out what it would be good at.

4runner, hehe, by the way I saw you as Maximus Aragonist (at least I think so) just a few days ago.

Well, we started this thread as talking about Ranger/Warriors, but I think it's changing into another What Is A Good Secondary For A Ranger thread.

-I don't like pure rangers, or pure anything. You have to have a secondary because that way you always have more skills. The more skills the better. Period.

-I don't like Ranger/Monk. Rangers are excellent already at keeping themselves alive, and they haven't enough energy to be a group healer. However, using some specific skills may be good for protection, but overall I believe the ranger is strong enough to protect himself.

-I like Ranger/Mesmer. Ranger mesmer gives me more disruption ability, better trapping ability, AND when I get ANGRY and I wanna just pound someone with metal I can grab Illusionary Weaponry and fight with a sword, axe, or hammer.

Alright, some topics that I REALLY want to be discussed:
-I REALLY WANT TO KNOW ABOUT RANGER/NECROMANCER R/N. This combination seems utterly powerful, but I really want to know how a ranger/necromancer does his work.

-I am still waiting to find out where to get Illusionary Weaponry.
[EDIT] Alright, thanks Jesh for the info. Anyone wanting to know how to get acquire elite skills, click on the link in the above post posted by jesh.

-And cmon, does anyone have anything...good to say about R/Ws???

IAS = increased attack skill

Hmm.. r/n...

10+3 Expertise
10+1+1 Marksman
7+1 Wilderness Survival
8 Curses
4+1Beast Mastery

Barbs
Dual Shot
Kindle Arrows
Weaken Armor
Penetrating Shot
Tiger's Fury
Oath Shot {E}

Weaken Armor has a long recharge, recharge it with Oath shot.
Pretty self explanatory, I'd hope. Might sub out something for Rigor Mortis or whatever.

Spinal Shivers
Marksman's Wager {E}
Read the Wind
Tiger's Fury
Defile Flesh

Whatever else.. there's so much cool things you can do.

Pindown
Virulence {E}
Determined Shot
Hunter's Shot
Read the Wind

Probably want a recurve or shortbow for this, if you want to land Hunter's Shot on a non-crippled target that's strafing and such..

BTW - Just got on aim for you.

Oh, okay, no problem.

Another idea is lots of beast mastery, and edge of extinction.. hehe.

12 or so Beast Mastery
12 or so Death Magic

Taste of Death
Marksman's Wager {E}
Death Nova
Summon Whatever
Edge of Extinction

Setting off chain reactions is fun. Kill something, when it makes a corpse, animate it. Put Death Nova on it, and blow it up with Taste of Death. Hopefully Marksman's Wager will give you enough energy.

Evasion Tank:

Cyclone Axe

Gladiator's Defence

Shield Stance
Lightning Reflexes
Troll Unguent
Healing Signet

10 Axe Mastery
10 Tactics
12 Expertise (10 +1 +1)
6 Wilderness Survival (5 + 1)

Soley for decoy/farming purposes. Escape in Glad's place will ensure stances 100% of the time.

W/R cannot duplicate this, and it works decently well for SF teams.

Kindle Arrows changes your damage to fire, Barbs will not trigger as long as you maintain that prep. Weaken Armor reduces armor against physical damage, not elemental, so Kindle Arrows is useless here too. Swap it out with RtW.

Defile Flesh Just wanted to say that you'll need an Icy Bowstring to benefit from Spinal Shivers. Reasonable build otherwise.

Ranger/Warriors are some of the best runners. They can retain speed boosts indefinitely and can avoid most of the problems R/Me or R/N would face while running.

R/W hammer knockdown builds are also good, any warrior skill that requires energy will benefit from this combination.

Well, I am trying to get a flourish build going for my R/W - the only skills it really serves much purpose with are the longer recharge skills though, so it may help you use debilitating shot more often for example, and pin down twice as much or so, concussion shot more frequently, but this collection of skills is not what people tend to use. Concussion shot/PinDown covers the dazed, then flourish (recharging both) and repeat on the next caster, but I haven't tested to see how it works. It should be able to reliably hit longer spells by elementalists/mesmers/necromancers; monks would be tough as they often have short casting times, so for the monks you'd include Debilitating shot which you can recharge as well; this would allow you to drain energy pretty fast. We'll see, I hope to find SOME use for flourish :P

Meant to put ignite, it's kinda obvious about the barbs/weaken thing, as I would hope the icy string would be as well.

THAT sounds really cool, props to you for being creative. Still, it's not going to be that great of an energy engine on a ranger primary, but maybe on a w/r... hmmm...

It may seem a bit weird, but I used to have a bit of fun with this R/W 'tank' build in Comp Arenas.

Attributes:
Swordsmanship 11
Tactics 10
Wilderness Survival 10
Expertise 8

The basis of the build is using lots of condition inflicting and Victory is Mine.

Skills:

Healing Signet
Sever Artery
Apply Poison
Sprint
Hamstring
Galrath Slash
Victory is Mine
Resurrection Signet

Expertise means apply poison costs less, and then you basically sprint after your target, having applied poison, use hamstring, and sever artery. That's 3 conditions. Usually, you'll get targeted by warriors, elementalists and sometimes necromancers. But, by inflicting a load of conditions, you can use Victory is Mine along with healing signet to stay alive. When enemies start realising you're doing this they often switch targets. You can do a lot of damage with Galrath Slash, and with all the conditions usually the foe dies easily. You can just repeat this on various enemies. Most monks fall before it because they're crippled and losing health rapidly. The only time it falters is with protection monks you can spam all these damage countering things and remove the conditions. Otherwise, its pretty decent for a R/W.
And being a W/R with strength wouldn't make it better because you'd run out of energy.

Actually, I find R/W just dandy for trapping. Mostly because you get access to a lot more defensive stances.

As far as melee goes, you'd probably be better off taking a R/N touch build rather than a R/W melee build. But, R/W melee can be fun, it's just not overly suitable for PvP. I put up a thread here a while ago on that subject. Should be good reading, if to only see my mistakes and what I learned from said mistakes.

i only make a R/W for the use of Frenzy in PvE, Frenzy + Kindle + Dual, very nice combo.

I wouldnt make a R/W from the very start though, only skills u will ned from warrior side is a few stances (Maybe) and Frenzy, u would be better off going with R/Mo, R/Me or R/N from the start. But personally, go R/Me and just change through ur other perfessions if u need them...

This is the build i use in PvP and i usually pown monks and casters all day long with it.
Marksmanship:14
Widerness Survival:13
The rest of the points are worthless
Crippling shot/Punishing shot(your choice they are both elites)
Pin down
Cuncussion shot
Savage shot
Troll urgent
Healing spring/Rez signet(depends mainly on how good your monks are)
Sprint
I prefer crippling shot over punishing shot but they both work. Also if your monks don't have good energy management and ppl have a tendancy to die alot you better take rez signet but if not healing spring helps them heal and you too.Which in turn every one stays alive longer. The way to make this build work is to use your energy wisely dont use it all at once or you will screw yourself.
R/W can work well in a group if you know to use them if not they are worthless like most have said before me.

King Symen, why dont you use throw dirt if you are going for status'? Also, why dont you have any evasion? I usually go for atleast one evasion technique, they come in extremely handy.

And lasteele, wheres the expertise? It would reduce your energy consumption a lot, and it would only take 1 or 2 points off either marksmanship or ws to get like 8-10 points in expertise.
