The GW player
vancha
I have been playing GW since 31 of may now.
AND IM STILL ADICTED!!!!
The problem is though, I havent got much time for homework and playing GW nowadays... Since i go to school (10th grade) we have alot of essays and homework for the moment. I also play the saxofon (nothing over [except guitar ] nothing by the side), wich means that before xmas its a lot of rehersals and practice, atleastthats how it is here in Norway.
I feel like I dont get to play anymore and im wondering if im gonna stop playing... But that is like asking Amerika to draw their troops out of Irak...(soz just an example).
The conclusion is then simple: dont stop playing.
But still:
GW makes you drowsy and fatassed.
You dont do your homework properly and you dont wanna go out anymore...
My bestfriend plays GW 3-4 hours a day.
I have friends in GW who are 40 years old playing at job and friends that play 8 hours a day.
And another thing. I wondered where do YOU play GW? At home, at your job, at your eksgirlfriend/eksboyfriends house , at school?(a guy at my school plays WoW during the lessons...), do you play in the morning before work, maybe you work for Anet and get to 'test' GW there, or are you just the normal kind wich comes home from job/school and says a brief 'Hi' to your familly before throwing yourself over the computer.
You see, I have made myself this picture in my mind that GW players come home, throw themselves over their 'SupaMegaTronic AMD ATHLON DELUXE 5,6 Ghz and 4000gig ram' comp and sit there drooling over the keyboard while you try to memorise who that guy with the weird name pm'ing you is.
After round 5 hours of playing they think: boy i'm hungry!. and they order a pizza.
Then they continue playing for 3-10 more hours until they look at the watch and go like:Oh my!!! I had no idea!.
So they either just log out without saying a thing or they start saying like: goodbyezzz, hugzz, l8z, bye or the classic:Oh no im soooo sorry but I have to go, its veeeery urgent you see and, well bye bye.
Can anyone prove me wrong bout this?

Yeah - I'm missing something here too...
Are you trying to state that all GW players are compulsive addicts and/or losers?
I'm 38, work full time, go to college full time (4.0 GPA), and have a family. I play when I have time - which sometimes is a lot, other times not so much.
Oh, and to my knowledge, neither AMD nor Intel have a 5 or 6 gHz processor yet....

Well. I play GW at home. At school I read teh forum.
I'm not a real GW-freak, altough I play alot. I play hockey and I play the trompet, so I have other stuff to do.
I like playing hockey more then playing GW. GW is just for fun, I don't see it as a hobby or anything, I just play it in my spare time.
I'm 15 years old so I don't play at work or anything, I don't even have a job .

From what I can read of this, it seems like you're basing most of what you say on yourself and your own experiences with the game, coupled with a gross amount of stereotypes and hyperbole.
The situation you describe does exist to an extent--there are people, like yourself, who simply cannot put down the game for an extended period of time. The solution is hard to bear but is the sufficient cure--play in moderation. Know when to start, when to stop, and when to take breaks.
This is simple to do in GW, as you can window the game to keep an eye on your clock in your icon tray, and that most missions and quests don't take terribly long to finish. Limit yourself (I know, self control is becoming a thing of the past) and you'll find that it's not the game that controls people, it's the people that control themselves and let themselves fall into the pit of addiction.
Just be glad this isn't FFXI or EQ. Those games are designed outright to be time sinks, while GW is more focused towards a more casual playerbase.

GW makes me forget to eat. Seriously. I think I've lost about 15 pounds since I started playing in August, and can now fit into clothing sizes I haven't been able to since high school.
Not the healthiest of lifestyles, but I'm having fun.

Mmmm... pizza...

Ok well, we don't get to the point that we have to reflect our lifestyle on an internetforum, because we'd be so insecure about it, so that proves you wrong, I suppose.

Batou of Nine
Hi my name is Batou. And i have a problem.
I am addicted to GW, My gpa is taking a steady decline as my class attendance also wavers. I am supposed to get my Bachelor's Degree next month. Now, its looking like i wont be able to because of dropping grades. Work is now my only hindrance to playing GW. I am a nerd. And my life suffers greatly because of it...
BUHAHAHAHA, just kidding. Wasnt that depressing? Actually i AM getting my degree next month, classes are going just fine, and i LOVE my job. However, as weird as it is, i am able to play GW like 3-4 hours everyday. I have no clue how i have the time.... HAHAHAHAHaha...Oh ya. im a nerd too.

Me, I am a nerd as well. I wasn't a nerd before the game's release. My Boyfriend was a nerd all along and he is quite surprised at me turning into one as well.
But the job is going fine, my friends don't notice the change, so I guess this is one addiction I can live with. I do read less, though, which is kind of a shame. And I hardly watch TV. Don't miss that one bit.

I'm actually in a very similar situation. I'm in 10th grade as well, and have always had a 4.40 GPA. I started Guild Wars over 5 months ago (and have ~420 hours). I've noticed that I now have a scheduled time to play, which goes from 8pm to bedtime, and most of my free time is spent playing. Because of this, my grades have been falling a bit (I have three Bs) from lack of effort (I try to save as much work as I can to do at lunch )
As fun as the game is, I almost wish it had never existed so I wouldn't be hooked. Altough recently I went a couple days without playing (due to excessive homework and multiple band rehersals and drumline practices) At least winter break is just around the corner...

Well, I'm a sad case. Because my hobby is Guild Wars & then any left over spare time is running a Guild Wars fansite. So what does that make me? I'm... UBER GEEK.
P.S. Yes I have a life outside of all this

No. I hear yah about the whole family thing.
When I get home, it's a battle. See, Nana likes the sewing forums, but she won't use the old computer to access them. She has to use my tricked-out system because the sewing jpegs look better on my lcd monitor.

Maybe, that is how it is spelt in Norwegian, maybe?
I don't say America or Amerika, I say The States or USA.

Define Nerd if you will?
I can see that GW has definitely affected your spelling ability and that is a sign that YOU should be taking time off the game ;-)
As in all online games you have those that are truly devoted to it and spend far more time than is healthy. In part I'm sure because they are socially challenged, reclusive, easily addicted to the online environment and assumed personalities they develop (nerd as you called it) and for others its thier hobby and a harmless way to spend free time.

Actually - I was doing some reading about this. There was once a big movement to "simplify the English language" - Daniel Webster was one of the big proponents of it. He proposed, among other things, to get rid of silent letters, redundant letters, etc. Some of the things he pushed for actually took root (like "jail" instead of "gaol") but others didn't (like "groop" instead of "group" or "sox" instead of "socks").
It's actually kind of interesting and amusing....

My situation sux though...I moved to his place where my job is and I don't know anyone here. ANYONE. And I'm not the kinda person that goes to a bar on my own to try and get to know people...I've been unable to join a sports club for the last 9 months (started the job 9 months ago) cos my doctor told me I needed an operation...that operation's now gone but I'm so hooked on GW that I can't be bothered doing sports...
So yeah...work 9:30-5:30 and get home, play GW...forget dinner, cos that's when the Americans start playing (I live in EU), go to bed at 4am cos that's when the Americans go to bed...

I'm not addicted to GW per se, but I do like to play it when I can and do find much enjoyment out of it. I have a life, I have plenty of rehearsals to go to (I'm a stage actor) and can always find the time to go out on a friday night with my friends. While I do consider myself at least partly a nerd/geek whatever the word for it is, I have no problem dragging my 18-year old ass away from my computer to find something to do for a change. Though I won't lie, it does spend much time in front of it. ^_^
Synapse
I find GW taking more of my time lately. I like to play every evening after work and dinner (food>GW). Between the demands of guildies, friends list and my own character progression needs + time just hanging out and chatting (I love social games!) I never seem to get it all done. Guess I need a 'Time Management for GW' class! Now even the forum is cutting into my time with the RPG thread in Lyssa's Fiction. Luckily I can do some of this from work. *mulls over the idea of getting GW running at work - no......must.......resist*

Well I quit the game just after SF update, now I'm back and ready to embrace my nerdiness gain..
Had to chuckle about our american friends telling people how to spell - hehe.
