I'm level 7 and have 1k gold and havent left newbie land yet. I cant decide on a sub job for my monk.

I don't really know anything about skills later on in the game and was wondering if somebody could tell me what sub jobs really offer a primary job Monk.

any information would be great.

You might want to take a look at the Monk Profession Guide from the site here, as it discusses the roles of the monk and some of the pros/cons of their secondary pairings. From there you can link to all of the Profession guides, which are all worthwhile reading for choosing a secondary.

Imho, Mesmer is probably the best choice as it allows for two things: energy management and signet support. Mesmers have skills which replenish their energy reserves, which is good for a monk. Signets are good for those times when the monk is being focused on with interrupts and energy drain.

Warrior is a good choice for the Tactics skill, if you'd like to have some defense equipped that doesn't utilize your skill pool much.

Elemental is also good for Earth Magic or Water Magic, which can add protection or slow down approaching melee attackers. Fire Magic has some good area of attack spells for dealing close range damage to groups. The only real downside is that all of these steal energy away from the monk's skill pool, which can be counterproductive in groups.

The Ranger offers Beast Mastery which offers some good protection. Having a good animal by your side is cool, and can be helpful when the team is otherwise occupied. It's not worth it though unless you spend a lot skill points in it. Wilderness Survival is an option, but again steals energy that the monk can't really afford.

Necro... don't know much about it, though I've heard that Blood Magic can be helpful.

The Articles Library has some good build reviews, which while not necessarily the character you want, are worth reading to get an overview of the strategies the professions are suited for.
