I always find it hard when people post this sort of thread as unless people know the style you play they will only be able to give you suggestions that suit them or are known to suit other people.
What's your secondry?
What style do you want to play with your ele? e.g. damage, protection, melee, ranged?

Early on, most of the spells you get will tend to be fire, so I would try to specialize in that for awhile. You will want to spend some time learning how monsters react to spells like Fire Storm, and when to, and when not to use these types of spells. Fire spells tend to be high damage, multi target spells with massive energy costs and possible exhaustion problems, and are very popular.
In the middle areas in the game, you might want to try experimenting with air, or air/earth combo. I personally like having Enervating Charge (air), and Stoning (earth) and Aftershock (earth) for good combination. Whirlwind (air) with aftershock is also quite nice if you're facing a group. Air is generally single-target focus. Your damage is very high, and exhaustion isn't much of a problem.
Earth and water are both unique. They require much more skill and strategy to play effectively, and are often used more heavily in PvP (but they are still both very effective in PvE!). Earth on its own has many defensive abilities, including those that can help a group. An elementalist who uses ward vs melee, ward vs foes, and ward vs elements (all earth) can be a lifesaver for a party, especially if they are (for example) a E/Mo with some miscellaneous support spells (hex/condition removers for example). You can fight directly with earth, since you can buff your defensive strength up considerably with some spells, but you don't have much for damage at a distance, so if you want to use an earth attack character, you're going to be in the middle of the fray all the time.
Water elementalists specialize in slowing enemies down mainly. They can be good for neutralizing enemy casters (use any slow hex + maelstrom + water trident if they try to run). You won't do as much damage with water as with other elements, and since slowing monsters isn't a terribly vital part of play, most water casters play PvP almost exclusively from my experience.
That's a sampling of what elementalists are like. I would suggest, to be honest, that you try specializing in each element in turn (not all at once!) at different points in the game, and see which works best for you. Figure out what type of caster you enjoy playing, and what type you don't. Figure out which skills/combinations work well, and which just don't make sense.

As Rico has stated in the begining you will be using Fire Magic because most elementalist skills you unlock in the begining are Fire. When you get to the middle you can try out any others, but when you get to the last stages (when you get to the Mursaat's) they're armor is weak against Air so I suggest using that. Also in PvP you will most likeley be gravitating towards Air. Also you don't need to worry about nukeing skills. Nuking generally meant you used a lot of AoE's (Area of Effect), since the new update making AoE ineffective against creatures Nukers have become obsolete.
