does anyone know what affects items dropped for each player?

are dropped items rarity dependent apon how much exp the player has? or is it the rank or what? my friend always ets good drops farming griffons and i have nevery got a gold drop there, he seems to get 2 each run, any help?

note that if you farm a certain place frequently, both the quality and the amount of drops will decrease.
