hmm well, for your first question, r/mo and mo/r dont really have the same role in a battle. as a monk you ll be expected to heal( although you can also be a smiter to deal dmg) and as a ranger you will interrupt or deal dmg(basically). it actually all depends on what kind of character you want to play.
as for a ?/mo character, normally all professions work well with monk as a secondary profession(any1 correct me if im wrong).

In PvP, I'd go Ranger/Monk.
Just because looking as a monk everyone will rush to kill you first. No fun.

true. it is annoying to always be targeted first as a monk in pvp.and when you play ranger, u get to annoy people by interrupting them

Personally, I feel that Mo/R is the weakest Mo/x combination. You really don't have access to any of the ranger abilities--you don't have expertise, you aren't using a bow (I hope!), and you probably won't have a pet (unless you're playing a smiting pet beastmaster), so that just leaves a couple skills in wilderness survival that you might be able to use. If you want more defensive capablity for you monk, go Mo/W, or maybe Mo/E. If you want a more efficient healer/protector, Mo/N, or maybe Mo/Me.
R/Mo is a perfectly workable combination, although I would argue that it isn't necessarily the best for PvP (again, beast masters aside)

Just because looking as a monk everyone will rush to kill you first. No fun. This is absolutely horrid advice. Playing W/Mo or R/Mo so you can be a healer with more armor is extremely weak in both PvE and PvP. In PvP probably the only class that can pull off monk secondary (and do the healing/prot thing full time) is the elementalist. Most other classes when dipping into Monk secondary can only take a few support hex removals or conditions removals to aid the team.
If you want to heal go Mo/N or Mo/Me. These both excel at the monk role. Offering of blood is superior energy management and drain enchant/inspired hex isn't bad either.
If you do want to go damage I suggest a R/Me over an R/Mo. The monk secondary doesn't bring a lot to the table for a ranger. The mesmer has some rather useful inspirations stances such as hex breaker. However rangers are extremely flexible and tricky to pin down to a single best secondary.
