Ascension and what happens?

What happens once you ascend in terms of gameplay? Do you still get to roam the map as it is and visit old lower leveled characters or are you stuck in one place with basicly nothing to do and nothing to fight and nothing to buy and sell?

Also where do you find the flaming swords? i've been looking for some for a while now?

i looted one of those swords off a hydra near augury rock
